“CBS Evening News” is heading back to the Big Apple, with a new look and format, and an ensemble team to replace Nora O’Donnell, who is stepping down as anchor after the presidential election. John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois will anchor the news show from the CBS Broadcast Center, while Margaret Brennan, CBS News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent and moderator of “Face the Nation,” will regularly lead coverage from Washington, D.C. Lonnie Quinn is being named chief weathercaster. “CBS Evening News” moved to D.C. from New York in 2019, when O’Donnell began as anchor. After the election, O’Donnell will move into a role as a CBS News senior correspondent focusing on longform reporting and interviews across CBS and Paramount.
Fox has wrapped its Upfront with increases in dollar volume, including double-digit volume growth for streamer Tubi. “Our focused portfolio of market-leading properties in sports, news, entertainment and streaming delivered year-over-year growth in both linear and digital advertising commitments as well as growth in overall portfolio pricing in this year’s upfront,” said Fox President, Advertising Sales, Marketing and Brand Partnerships Jeff Collins. New offering OneFox, enabling advertisers to buy audiences across Fox properties, delivered three times increase in volume over last year, added Collins.
Disney Advertising reports it completed its Upfront with record commitments. Overall revenue and volume were up 5% year-over-year, and sports and streaming rose double digits in volume. Momentum stemmed from multi-year deals, growth in women’s sports sponsorships, multicultural partnerships and investments from independent agencies. “Our growth in the number of marketers we work with and the increased investments in advertising innovation, demonstrates Disney’s differentiator,” said Rita Ferro, President, Global Advertising, Disney. “As we double down on our commitment to world-class storytelling, automation, and new ad products, demonstrating growth for partners underpins our focus for the future.”
While 35% of all households are TV subscribers, the number drops to 11% for Gen Z households, according to Comscore report, The State of Gen Z and the Future of Advertising. Other key findings about the Gen Z audience include:
· 22.5% use a streaming service with live TV capabilities
· 45% say they prefer watching TV shows online
· 33% strongly feel that social media is useful
· 37% have watched a gaming live-stream in the last three months
“Gen Z’s preference for online and streaming content over traditional TV, along with their deep engagement with social media and gaming platforms, highlights their digital-first nature,” Steve Bagdasarian, Comscore’s Chief Commercial Officer, tells Cynopsis. “Marketers must acknowledge and adapt to these cross-media habits to effectively connect with this influential audience,”
Don Lemon is suing Elon Musk and X for the cancelation of his show on the platform. Musk was set to be Lemon’s first interview on the show, but the X owner was unhappy with Lemon’s line of questioning and axed the deal. Lemon alleges breach of contract and misappropriation of his name and likeness. “This case is straightforward. X executives used Don to prop up their advertising sales pitch, then canceled their partnership and dragged Don’s name through the mud,” said Lemon’s attorney, Carney Shegerian. “You don’t have to be a genius to see the fraud, negligence, and reputational damage here.”
Outbrain, a technology platform that drives business outcomes through engagement, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire omnichannel video platform Teads. The deal will create an end-to-end, omnichannel advertising solution for the open internet, combining Outbrain’s AI-driven performance technology with Teads’ video and branding solutions. “This strategic combination presents vast new opportunities for the advertising industry at large,” said Bertrand Quesada, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Teads. “We’ve built a world-class team at Teads that has focused on driving the best video and branding outcomes, and in the last several years have successfully brought those strengths to CTV.”

Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky aren’t the only record-breakers this Olympics. NBCUniversal has said it will set a new record for advertising revenue, topping the estimated $1.25 billion it received for Tokyo’s Games, with half a billion coming from first-time Olympics sponsors.
Olympics programming, which is accumulating billions of streaming minutes, is disrupting the workplace, claimed NBCUniversal execs during a press call. “We did some research on our viewership,” said Molly Solomon, President and Executive Producer for NBC Olympics Production. “One in four said their work productivity declines during the Olympics. Two out of three people say that the Olympics provide an escape. And half said they’re changing their daily routines to watch the Olympics.” Which is good news for NBCU, if not bosses.
Olympic sponsors have seen a significant uplift in searches since the start of the games, according to search intelligence provider Captify. In the US, ArcelorMittal saw the biggest increase, at 7625%, followed by Carrefour at +430.10% and Allianz at +139.50%. In terms of sports, table tennis saw the biggest search uplift in the US at 1480.10%, followed by Badminton (+1065.03%) and break dancing (+668.75%).

The BBC and Magic Light Pictures announced “Tiddler,” from UK book creators Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The half-hour animated special following a little fish with a big imagination, narrated by Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his G-Unit are joining forces with Lionsgate to launch a FAST channel targeting action lovers. “50 Cent’s movies and television series are synonymous with non-stop action, and we’re thrilled to extend our longstanding partnership into the FAST space,” said Lionsgate President of Worldwide Television Distribution Jim Packer. “Drawing from one of the biggest action libraries in the world, this channel will give 50’s global fan base a deep slate of action movies and television series while expanding his reach to new audiences worldwide.”

Upcoming sports streaming service Venu, a joint venture established by ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery, will be priced at $42.99/month, with a seven-day free trial. The service will provide access to 14 live sports channels and a library of on-demand content from the companies’ portfolios of sports networks and ESPN+. “We’re building Venu from the ground up for fans who want seamless access to watch the sports they love, and we will launch at a compelling price point that will appeal to the cord cutter and cord never fans currently not served by existing pay TV packages,” said Pete Distad, CEO Venu. The streamer is expected to launch in the fall.
A joint bid from DAZN and BeIN Sports landed rights to France’s Ligue 1 soccer. The five-year deal is reportedly worth $540 million. DAZN will broadcast all 306 matches. BeIN will air the Saturday 5p match, which will be made available to DAZN after a seven-hour delay.
Ben Solak is joining ESPN as a national NFL analyst. Solak will specialize in on-the field breakdowns and data analysis while also contributing to ESPN’s sports betting content. Fans will primarily find Solak’s analysis on ESPN+ and on various ESPN podcasts, with betting content found across digital platforms, including the ESPN App, and on ESPN BET Live.
Spectrum and EverPass Media, a media platform dedicated to commercial businesses, struck an agreement offering Spectrum Business customers the ability to get NFL Sunday Ticket and Peacock Sports Pass via EverPass Media throughout Spectrum Business’ 41-state footprint. As EverPass’ first Official Channel Partner, Spectrum will offer new and existing business customers such as bars, restaurants and hotels access to stream NFL Sunday Ticket and Peacock Sports Pass. Spectrum will again carry Thursday Night Football for Spectrum Business customers this season while also launching a new sports video tier aimed at commercial establishments.
The jury in the class-action lawsuit filed by “Sunday Ticket” subscribers against the NFL did not follow his instructions in determining damages, said US District Judge Philip Gutierrez. That comment came as the judge heard the NFL’s post-trial motion asking that he rule for the league if he finds the plaintiffs did not prove their case. On June 27, the jury awarded $4.7 billion in damages after it decided the NFL violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service. “Today we asked the district court to set aside the jury’s verdict in this case, which is contrary to the law and unsupported by the evidence presented at trial,” the NFL said in a statement. “The NFL’s media distribution model is the most fan friendly in sports, with all games broadcast locally on free over-the-air television in addition to many other choices available to fans who want even more access to NFL content. We will continue to pursue all avenues in defense of the claims brought in this case.”
The American Association of Professional Baseball announced that the league has eclipsed the one million fan mark already this season, the earliest the league has passed a million fans since the pre-pandemic season of 2019. “As we enter the final month of the 2024 season, we continue to see landmark growth across the board, and eclipsing the million-fan mark while still in July is one of our collective best accomplishments this season,” said Joshua Schaub, Commissioner of the American Association of Professional Baseball.
