Consumers are maxed out on the cost of TV, but some features and content on video subscriptions may drive additional spend, according to Hub’s annual Monetization of Video study, which found that more expensive ad-free services are stickier than cheaper (or free) ad-supported ones. In addition to pricing, features that added the most value to viewers were access to movies recently shown in theaters; all seasons of every show included; all episodes released at once; and original shows that can’t be watched anywhere else. “These results are encouraging for streamers under pressure to maximize profits,” said Jon Giegengack, Principal at Hub. “Consumers are feeling the pinch of inflation. But even so, key content like theatrical movies and exclusive originals are as important as cost – great news for platforms that need to raise prices, not lower them.”
Syfy canceled “Reginald the Vampire” after two seasons. The series finale of the horror comedy aired July 10.
Netflix has renewed “Somebody Feed Phil” for an eighth season. The food/travel series following gourmand and “Everybody Loves Raymond” creator Phil Rosenthal comes from Lucky Bastards and a494.
When it comes to back-to-school shopping, parents are most likely to pay attention to ads featuring discounts (93%), QR codes (81%), and products being used by students (89%), according to a new LG Ads study, “Commercials & Classrooms: TV’s Impact on Back-to-School Shopping.” Additional findings include:
· Parents across all educational levels prefer streaming (about 90%) when watching with their children.
· Seventy-seven percent of parents prefer FAST apps for a wide selection of content at no cost, which is 12% higher than the general adult population.
· Most parents watch TV daily, spending 59% of their viewing time co-viewing with their children.
· Eighty-four percent of parents plan to watch the 2024 Olympic Games with their children.
“Understanding viewer behavior is critical for advertisers when building effective CTV advertising campaigns around back-to-school. These insights help advertisers understand that some advanced ad techniques can work harder for them, especially when these interactive features drive to things like specific store locations or in-store discounts,” said LG Ad Solutions, CMO, Tony Marlow. “Advanced CTV ads have proven to be extremely effective for the season, with 85% of parents saying they have shopped at a specific store after seeing a back-to-school ad.” |

Fox News drew 6.5 million viewers and 1.2 among A25-54 in primetime on Saturday, leading all of television during coverage of the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, according to early Nielsen data. FNC’s coverage peaked during the 8p hour with 7.1 million viewers and 1.4 million in the demo.
ABC’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” returned for a new season on Wednesday to rank as the most-watched telecast of the night in Total Viewers (3.71 million), and the number one entertainment telecast among A18-49 (0.44), according to Nielsen. The season premiere outperformed its most recent season finale (3/21/21) by 28% in Total Viewers and by 7% in the younger demo.
Over 4 million viewers tuned into UPtv’s “Red, Mike and Blue Bloods” programming stunt from Thursday, July 4 through Sunday, July 7. On Independence Day, 900,000 viewers watched “Hudson & Rex,” which tied as UPtv’s strongest ever July 4th in HH ratings. For the week, UP ranked #48 in Ad Supported Cable for both HH and W25-64, according to Nielsen.
A peak TV audience of 24.2 million watched the Euro 2024 final across UK’s ITV and the BBC, with an average of 22.3 million. ITV had a 26% viewing share of those watching or streaming the match through a TV, an increase of 7 percentage points from ITV’s viewing share 2021, and its highest viewing share for a major men’s football tournament final since records began.
