Amid calls for him to drop out of the presidential race, President Joe Biden will have a one-on-one with NBC News anchor Lester Holt on Monday, July 15 – the first night of the Republican National Convention. The interview is slated to air as a primetime special at 9p, with highlights on “NBC Nightly News” and NBCNews.com.
CNN Worldwide CEO Mark Thompson shared plans to shift CNN to an integrated multimedia news operation, merging linear and digital newsgathering. Also on the way before the end of the year is the launch of CNN.com’s first direct-to-consumer subscription product. “We want to build on CNN.com’s reach with a new focus on engagement and frequency – how long our users spend with us and how often they return – by improving the quality of the product experience and giving users powerful reasons to come back to us more often,” wrote Thompson in a memo to employees – about 100 of whom will be affected by staff reductions.
Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews is stepping down as President of CBS News after less than a year in the job. In a memo to employees, she said she plans to transition to a role as editorial advisor through the election. “We all know our industry and company are going through a transformation and a number of short- and long-term decisions need to be made,” she wrote. “I do not want to be disingenuous with any of you about who should drive those decisions. I’ve always leaned into my integrity and my values and I felt it was important to be transparent at this juncture about my plans.” Ciprian-Matthews has been with CBS News for 31 years.
Subscriber churn remains an issue for SVOD services – 42% of US streaming subscribers report that they “’regularly subscribe, cancel and resubscribe,” according to Ampere’s Media Consumer survey covering 1Q24. But bundling streaming services can have a significant impact on mitigating the issue. Ampere cites Disney subscribers as an example: Consumers who had previously churned and then returned to take the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle are 59% less likely to churn within 12 months than those who take Disney+ alone, based on 1Q23 sign-ups. Ampere also found that US resubscribers skew younger (aged 18-44), are more likely to be in family households, and are typically avid media consumers. And with that wide media diet, the cohort is 40% more likely than average to exhibit signs of subscription fatigue and 21% more likely to desire unified access to content across different services. Which makes bundles, Ampere concludes, a key strategy in subscriber retention.
Sixty-six percent of audiences are unsatisfied with current representations of disability and mental health in TV and film, according to a the Greenlight Disability report from Inevitable Foundation. Other findings include:
· 35% of disabled people watch 20+ hours of TV per week, versus 25% of non-disabled people.
· 20% of all audiences would subscribe to a new streaming service and go to more movies in theaters if they included authentic representations.
· 40% of audiences, both disabled and non-disables, report being very likely to recommend a TV show or film to friends if it showcases authentic representations.
The WGA West has settled its arbitration claim with CBS, which will pay $3.05 million to 24 writers on “MacGyver,” “SEAL Team” and “Hawaii Five-0.” “Guild members providing writing services on these series were required to continue working even though the studio had declared the rooms closed and stopped making weekly compensation and benefit contribution payments to the impacted writers,” said the WGAW in a letter. “This is a violation of the MBA [bargaining agreement]. Staff writers and Article 14 writers should receive weekly pay and benefit contributions for each week they provide writing services as outlined in the MBA.”
After sitting out a season while “The Golden Bachelor” took up franchise space, “Bachelor in Paradise” has been renewed by ABC for season 10. The next installment will arrive in 2025.

Albert Lewittin has been named showrunner and executive producer of “True Crime News,” a syndicated series from Warner Bros. Roku and Paramount+ are going all in on an immersive campaign to celebrate the upcoming 25th anniversary of “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Paramount+ will reach Roku streamers with an animated vehicle parade in Roku’s digital cityscape screensaver Roku City featuring SpongeBob, Patrick Star and Squidward, as well as Bikini Bottom landmarks, including SpongeBob’s pineapple house. A fully branded SpongeBob SquarePants Roku Home Screen Theme will represent the first brand to use Roku’s new Animated Wallpaper.

Omnicom announced the launch of ArtBotAI, a next-generation intelligent content platform leveraging Gen AI large language models. “Elegance at scale – that was the original idea behind ArtBotAI,” said Paolo Yuvienco, Chief Technology Officer, Omnicom. “Brands are demanding more customized content at scale, but their content studios and one-off tools slow down, get more expensive, and lose out on quality and performance when they try to do more with them. The Federal Trade Commission barred anonymous online messaging app NGL (“not gonna lie”) from serving users under the age of 18, saying the service violated child privacy and consumer protection laws and harmed children and teenagers. NGL agreed to a $4.5 million settlement, and was hit with an additional $500,000 penalty from the LA District Attorney for exposing users to cyberbullying. This is the first time the FTC has banned a digital platform from serving minors.
TikTok is prohibiting advertisers from using personalized targeting and campaign selections to reach US users aged 13-17. Advertisers’ only options for reaching teens are “a few broad targeting options, such as location, language, and device-related information,” said TikTok in a blog post. The ByteDance-owned company also touted “Disconnect Advertisers,” a feature enabling users to stop future off-platform data shared by specific advertisers from being used to serve them personalized ads.

The NBA has finalized a deal worth $76 billion which would make NBC, Prime Video and ESPN its TV partners for the next eleven seasons, reports The Athletic. Once the contracts are approved by the NBA’s board of governors, TNT Sports will have five days to match one of the offers.
NBCUniversal will offer Olympics Coverage on USA Network in 4K HDR with Dolby Atmos audio. Programming is 24/7 beginning at 8a on July 24 ending at 5:30p on August 11, focusing on Team USA and team sports like basketball, soccer, beach volleyball, volleyball, and water polo, as well as track and field, and swimming.
The TNT Sports programming block on truTV, which debuted earlier this year, will get a boost this fall with a broader array of sports content including live games and event coverage from the MLB Postseason, NBA, NHL, US Men’s and Women’s National Soccer Teams, Mountain West football, MotoGP and more. In 2025, TNT Sports live sports content airing on truTV will also expand courtesy of agreements with NASCAR, Roland-Garros and the BIG EAST, among others.
