Credit rating agencies S&P Global Ratings and Moody’s Investors Service were generally positive about Paramount Global’s proposed merger with Skydance, but voiced concerns regarding uncertainty over the programmer’s linear networks. Skydance and Paramount agreed on Monday to merge in a deal valued at $8 billion, which is expected to close in Q3 2025. S&P Global said Tuesday that while the deal was “positive” it would continue to monitor the transaction because of the long lead time to close and concerns over the decline of linear TV, according to Deadline. Moody’s placed Paramount debt on review for possible downgrade because of “secular pressures” on its linear networks which could force its hand to lower its rating or require a new strategy for the company before the deal closes, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Skydance has said the deal includes a large cash infusion to help Paramount pare down debt.

NBC announced premiere dates for its fall season, kicking off September 23 with “The Voice,” featuring new coaches Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé, followed by freshman scripted series “Brilliant Minds” Starring Zachary Quinto. The season finale of “America’s Got Talent” will air September 24, while all new episodes of One Chicago will return September 25. The second annual “People’s Choice Country Awards” airs live from Nashville on September 26 on NBC and Peacock, while new episodes of “The Irrational,” “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: SVU,” and “Found” begin the week of September 30. Reba McEntire comedy “Happy’s Place” debuts October 18; “St. Denis Medical” launches November 12 and all new episodes of “Night Court” return November 19.

Missouri became the 14th state to oppose franchise fees for streaming services after Governor Mike Parson signed legislation Tuesday exempting streaming providers from paying separate local use fees in addition to those already levied on video service providers. Missouri joined Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Tennessee in a bipartisan consensus against imposing these fees, which could force consumers to pay a 5% tax on top of the subscription costs for every streaming service they choose. DirecTV is one of several providers that have opposed the fees and has worked with state legislatures and programmers to fight against proposals it says harms consumers and robs them “of more choice, control, convenience, and value.” In a blog post, DirecTV said it applauded the Missouri action, adding that it “should put to rest any further notion that franchise fees apply to consumers who choose to stream their content.”

The Hollywood Creative Alliance announced the 2024 Astra TV Awards nominees Tuesday, with FX Networks’ “The Bear” taking the lead with 15 nominations, followed by Max’s “Hacks” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” with 13 each. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and CBS’s “Ghosts” are tied for third place, with 11 nominations each. The 2024 Astra TV Awards will stream live from the Avalon Hollywood on August 18. The ceremony will be produced by DIGA Studios and Content.23 Media and can be watched worldwide on the official Astra Awards YouTube channel and KNEKT Television Network.

Fox Business Network’s Charles Payne will present a one-hour town hall today (July 10), “Unbreakable Investor: The Greatest Wealth Transfer Ever (Don’t Fumble the Bag).” Payne breaks down how to build a portfolio, how to find overlooked stock opportunities and how to overcome investing challenges. Joining Payne throughout the special are Fox Business real estate contributor Katrina Campins and Ironsides Macroeconomics Managing Partner Barry Knapp. Additionally, a new episode of Payne’s “Unstoppable Prosperity” podcast debuted July 9 at 2p in conjunction with the town hall.

Charter Communications said TelevisaUnivision’s new ad-supported premium subscription version of ViX, “Premium with Ads,” is now available at no additional cost to its Spectrum customers who have access to Univision as part of their Spectrum TV Select or Mi Plan Latino packages. Through the companies’ new multi-year agreement, customers can immediately begin streaming the 17,000 hours of premium original series, movies and live sports currently available on ViX – including this week’s CONMEBOL Copa América and UEFA Euro 2024 semifinals and title games – with limited ad load, in addition to the full library of on demand content spanning all genres.

American Public Television said it will offer four titles this summer to public TV broadcasters from BBC Studios for broadcast in fall 2024, including six-part drama anthology “Ghost Stories,” documentary series “Schama on Rembrandt: Masterpieces of the Late Years,” documentary film “Chopin Saved My Life” and the sitcom series “Up the Women.”

Podcast entrepreneur and comedian Joe Rogan will launch his first stand-up comedy special in six years – “Burn the Boats” – which will air on Netflix August 3 at 7p, according to Variety. The live special will be filmed at the Majestic Theater in San Antonio, Texas and be directed by Anthony Giordano, who has helmed UFC fights and four of Rogan’s previous specials.

JoJo Siwa is creating a new documentary series with “Dance Moms” creator Jeff Collins that will follow the star’s personal and professional life, according to Variety. The untitled unscripted series will offer an in-depth look at Sliwa’s creative process as she navigates the transition from child star to adult pop star. According to Variety, the storylines will be told in the first-person by Sliwa and those in her inner circle.

Kerrice Brooks (“My Old Ass”), Bella Shepard (“Wolf Pack”) and George Hawkins (“Tell Me Everything”) have joined the cast of the original Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” Brooks, Shepard and Hawkins will play cadets, joining previously announced cast members Holly Hunter as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy and Paul Giamatti as the season’s villain. Produced by CBS Studios, the new series will begin production later this summer.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Paramount+ original drama series – “Landman” – starring Oscar winner Billy Bob Thornton, will premiere November 17 exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and international markets where the service is available. The series will launch with two episodes, and subsequent episodes of the 10-episode long first season will be available weekly on Sundays. Created by Oscar nominee and executive producer Taylor Sheridan, “Landman” is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch Productions exclusively for Paramount+. Based on the 11-part podcast “Boomtown” from Imperative Entertainment and Texas Monthly, the series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires.

“Working Capital,” a new Bloomberg Originals program hosted by “New York” magazine Washington Correspondent Olivia Nuzzi will premiere July 17 at 8p. In each installment of the six-episode series, Nuzzi is joined by political and business leaders on location to candidly discuss what they view as America’s most urgent challenges in a historic year for global elections. New York City Mayor Eric Adams; New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield, billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski and Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar are among the influential figures featured in the series. Bloomberg Originals programming streams on Bloomberg.com and the Bloomberg app on Apple, Amazon, Roku, Samsung and Android devices. The programming also broadcasts during select primetime and weekend time slots on Bloomberg TV and BTV+.

Apple TV+ series – “Time Bandits” – the first ever TV adaptation of the cult classic movie of the same name, will premiere its first two episodes globally on July 24, followed by two new episodes every Wednesday through August 21. Created for television by Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”), Iain Morris (“The Inbetweeners”) and Taika Waititi (“Reservation Dogs”), and produced for Apple TV+ by Paramount Television Studios, Anonymous Content’s AC Studios and MRC, “Time Bandits” follows a ragtag group of thieves and their newest recruit: an 11-year-old history buff named Kevin in adventures through time and space.

CBS unveiled this season’s theme for reality show “Big Brother,” with Artificial Intelligence taking over the House. In a two-night premiere, “Big Brother” kicks off its 26th season on July 17 and 18 at 9p on CBS and will be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+. House highlights include an 8-foot root ball coffee table, a “Head of Household” room, a futuristic front bedroom for the year 2500 fit for five houseguests, side and back bedrooms with a fantasy fairy garden and sci-fi rocky planet themes and a wireframe skeleton bedroom created after the AI crashed when asked to create a “Have-Not Room.” Information regarding an all-new cast of houseguests will be announced soon.

Hulu’s reboot of reality series “Dance Moms” – “Dance Moms: A New Era” – will premiere August 7 on the streaming service, with a new coach, new dancers and new mama drama. Coach Glo Hampton will juggle bringing her team of tiny dancers to the next level while managing scheming moms and ensuing meltdowns. “Dance Moms: A New Era” is produced by the A+E Factual Studios group for Hulu and Lifetime and the project is helmed by original series Executive Producer Bryan Stinson.

Fox Weather will begin simulcasting on Fox Business Network (FBN) weekday mornings from 5-6a beginning July 15 with “Fox Weather First” co-anchored by Britta Merwin and Craig Herrera. Leading into FBN’s “Mornings with Maria,” the live daily simulcast will complement Fox Weather’s existing weekend morning simulcast on FBN which has been in place since December 2021. Additionally, Fox Weather correspondent Max Gorden will transition to a reporter role at FBN taking over duties in the Los Angeles bureau previously held by Kelly O’Grady, who is now a New York- based correspondent for the business network.

COMING UP

A new season of Fuse Media’s unscripted series, “Big Freedia Means Business” premieres October 2 at 8:30p on Fuse and Fuse+ in the U.S. Co-produced by World of Wonder and Fuse, who also share international streaming rights, the series will stream internationally on World of Wonder’s WOW Presents Plus and Fuse Media’s Shades of Black FAST channel day-and-date with the Fuse U.S premiere. The series will premiere on WOW Presents Plus in the US in 2025. Special guests this season include Macy Gray, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tamar Braxton, Billy Porter, and Cimafunk.

PBS unveiled its programming premieres for July and August, featuring docu-series, live special coverage and factual entertainment programming. The broadcaster continues its coverage of the Republican and Democratic conventions with “PBS News Special: Republican National Convention” July 15-18 and “PBS News Special: Democratic National Convention on August 19-22. Docu-series “Gods of Tennis,” debuts July 23 followed by the Season 3 premieres of “Cobra” (July 25) and “Hotel Portofino” (July 28). Season 4 of “Antiques Roadshow” kicks off on July 26. Other August premiers include “A Boston (R)evolution” (August 13), “American Masters: Blake Edwards: A Love Story in 24 Frames” (August 27), and “Odysseus Returns” (August 28).

Great American Family said Candace Cameron Bure (“A Christmas Less Traveled,” “The Ainsley McGregor Mysteries”) and Cameron Mathison (“A Kindhearted Christmas,” “General Hospital”) will star in a new original holiday film, “Jingle Bells, Wedding Bells,” set to premiere this November as part of Great American Christmas 2024. Great American Christmas is in its fourth season.

“The Commandant’s Shadow,” from Warner Bros. Pictures in association with HBO Documentary Films and directed by Daniela Völker, will debut July 18 at 9p on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.

STREAMING

62% of black households place high importance on the availability of content geared toward them when selecting streaming platforms, according to a new report from Horowitz Research. “FOCUS Black Volume I: Subscriptions 2024” noted that while 67% of Black TV content viewers subscribe to at least one SVOD service like Netflix or Prime Video, 42% have access to at least one Black-targeted offering, such as BET+, Zeus, Black World Cinema, or ALLBLK. Free ad-supported TV services are gaining traction as well — 75% of Black audiences watch content on FAST channels, compared to 67% of total market consumers, a five-fold increase from 2019. Virtual MVPD services like YouTube TV, Sling, and Hulu with Live TV are also gaining popularity among Black households, with 32% of Black content viewers subscribing to at least one vMVPD service.

According to a new study by LG Ad Solutions, CTV and streaming will be must-have environments for political marketers in the upcoming election regardless of party affiliation. The study – “The Big Shift – Political Edition” – showed that among those who had a preference, 57% of Republicans, 63% of Democrats, and 70% of Independents stated they prefer watching streaming TV compared to cable, satellite, and broadcast. That’s good news, given that forecasts by AdImpact project the CTV ad spend to increase by 24% to $1.34 billion compared to the 2022 midterms, outpacing major digital platforms Google and Facebook ($1.2 billion), and doubling projected spending on Network Cable, Satellite, and Radio combined ($671 million). Viewers across political parties are watching less linear TV, according to the study, and Free Ad-supported Streaming TV (FAST) environments are gaining adoption, with 69% of Democrats, 72% of Republicans and 66% of Independents preferring it to ad-free subscription TV. About 68% of democrats, 56% of Independents, and 61% of Republicans are cycling through streaming apps, meaning they have added an app and then canceled or paused an app after watching specific content.

SPORTS UPDATE

The Ultimate Endgamers League (UEL) launched its newest expansion team, the Georgia Ghost, in partnership with Ghost Gaming, bringing the total number of UEL professional teams to 14. UEL rewards player and team skill across a variety of different games and genres and recently concluded its Season 8 $100K Finals event on June 16th at Capital One Arena. The upcoming UEL Season 9 offers a $1 million prize pool, player stipends, and wellness benefits. The Season 9 Draft will begin July 27 and the new roster of Georgia Ghost will then compete in 10 regular season matches.

SailGP unveiled its 2024/2025 Season calendar, featuring new events in Brazil, Germany, Switzerland and Auckland, as well as a return to Great Britain and New York. Unfolding over a 12-month period – beginning and ending in November (2024-2025) – the season will be the league’s most expansive to date, with 14 events across an increased five continents.

Media rights and development company JMI Sports appointed Endeavor Analytics as its research and valuation partner, where Endeavor will be responsible for delivering strategic recommendations and property valuations to help JMI Sports maneuver the ever-changing college sports landscape. Endeavor Analytics will provide research, consulting, and valuation services to support JMI Sports’ commercial strategy, including naming rights and asset valuations, sales strategy support, and market landscape analysis. As part of its scope, Endeavor Analytics will support JMI Sports’ go-to-market strategy for new assets that will be introduced across college sports, including jersey patches, on-field signage, and conference entitlements.

GOING GLOBAL

Canadian production and distribution company Neshama Entertainment is partnering with Ireland’s Edwina Forkin to adapt author Andrea Carter’s popular book series, “The Inishowen Mysteries,” into a scripted Canadian/Irish mini-series. The project is currently in development with a plan to shoot in Ireland later this year. The miniseries will be created as a Canada-Ireland co-production with Neshama Entertainment (Arnie Zipursky) and Edwina Forkin (Zanzibar Films) & Ralph Christians.

Barcelona-based technology, entertainment and advertising company Titan OS S.L. has partnered with French telecom operator Free to launch the OQEE TV app on Titan OS, for Free Mobile and Freebox subscribers, at no additional cost. The OQEE TV app brings more than more than 230 additional channels and a range of OQEE TV services to Titan OS in France and is already available on Philips 2024 Smart TVs powered by Titan OS and will be progressively rolled out to some earlier models via an automatic software update. Titan OS is available for licensing on smart TVs from brands without their own operating system, allowing manufacturers to incorporate the Titan OS content offering into their TVs and to generate new recurrent revenue streams.

Nigerian-British production company Adverto Studios said its latest supernatural horror feature “A Song from the Dark” will be released on Prime Video on July 12 in the UK, North America, Canada, Australia and Africa. It is written and directed by Adverto Studios creator and founder Ogo Okpue, an award-winning British Nigerian filmmaker.

London-based Sandbox Group is collaborating with Walmart+, offering its learning and entertainment app for kids — PlayKids+ — for three free months to Walmart+ members, a $25 value. The offer will run between July 9 and October 8. To be eligible for the offer, users will need to be a monthly or annual Walmart+ member or sign up for a 30-day free trial of Walmart+. Walmart+ members will have access to PlayKids+’ library of learning games, videos and podcasts, including content like “Pocoyo,” “Masaha and the Bear” and “Talking Tom.”

Freshman hits including Food Network’s “24 in 24: Last Chef Standing” and “Wildcard Kitchen” and ID’s “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” as well as TBS’ acquired series “The Big Bang Theory,” helped Warner Bros. Discovery deliver two nights of more than a 60% share, nine nights of more than a 50% share and 28 nights of more than a 40% share of primetime cable viewing among Adults 18-49 in Q2, the company said. Live sports, including TNT Sports’ coverage of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Final Four, 2024 NBA Playoffs and 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs helped drive viewership among adults 18-49 during the quarter. WBD claimed 35% of adult primetime cable viewing—more than any other network group – in the period, with the portfolio’s lineup of live sports, true crime, cooking and home renovation competitions, and adult animation attracting more than 147 million total viewers on average each month.

Fox Sports said UEFA Euro 2024 Quarterfinals telecasts on the network averaged 3,569,000 viewers, up 89% vs. the 2021 Euro quarterfinal telecast average of 1,885,000 viewers, making it the most-watched Euro quarterfinals ever on English language TV. France knocked out Portugal on Friday, attracting 4,284,000 viewers on Fox, making it the most-watched U.S. English language quarterfinal telecast on record and the most-watched non-World Cup soccer telecast in Fox history, up 127% from the 2021 average. To date, UEFA Euro 2024 is averaging 1,502,000 viewers across Fox and FS1, up 42% vs. the equivalent 2021 tournament (1,058,000 viewers).

Anthem Sports & Entertainment, Inc. named Brian Doherty President of Ad Sales for top Anthem properties AXS TV and HDNET MOVIES, effective immediately. Doherty will report directly to Andy Schuon, President of AXS TV and HDNET MOVIES.

The WNET Group – parent of public television stations Thirteen, WLIW and NJ PBS and Long Island NPR station WLIW-FM – promoted Joe Harrell to Managing Editor, Integrated Initiatives and Digital Studios. In this newly created position, Harrell will lead cross-company content collaboration initiatives to ensure a cohesive approach to aligning programming with both current and prospective audience goals. He will also oversee a production team that will launch new digital projects, work with producers on digital capacity and production models, and contribute to building a digital programming brand for WNET. Harrell formerly served as Executive Producer of ALL ARTS, the multiplatform arts and culture hub at The WNET Group.

BossaNova Media has appointed former Warner Bros. Discovery marketing executive Alex Pye to the newly-created role of marketing manager. In addition, Kristina Giulalieva joins BossaNova as a contracts rights coordinator, reporting to director of commercial and business affairs Claire Lowe. Sarah Postlethwaite was named acquisitions executive, supporting BossaNova head of acquisitions Claire Runham. Postlethwaite, who has worked for Entertainment One, AMC Networks and STX Entertainment, will divide her time between BossaNova and the Content Team at Eccho Rights, which is part of Herbert L Kloiber’s production and financing company, Night Train Media.

Multi-channel advertising platform StackAdapt appointed Darcie Henry Chief People Officer. Henry brings over 20 years of experience in the tech industry, where she has led human resources and people organizations, driven product innovation, and supported international expansion efforts.

Irish animation house Lighthouse Studios has promoted finance director Marc Jordan to the newly created position of Chief Financial Officer. Jordan will play a pivotal role in shaping the company’s financial strategy and operations, including the financial management of co-productions, the first of which is a new children’s animated adventure series, “Showtime.” He joined Lighthouse Studios as Financial Controller when the company was founded in 2017, and for the past four years, he has served as its Finance Director. He currently serves as a Board Member of Animation Ireland.
