Skydance, the investment company headed by David Ellison, has agreed to purchase National Amusement Inc.’s controlling interest in Paramount Global in a deal that values the media giant at about $8 billion. The transaction, which is expected to close in Q3 2025, brings what has been a rollercoaster ride of negotiations for both parties to an end. Paramount still has 45 days to find a better suitor but would have to pay a $400 million break-up fee if it does. Although several offers were made in the past for the company, including those by Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony Pictures and media mogul Byron Allen, no formal competing deals have surfaced yet. Absent that, Skydance will merge with Paramount. Ellison, a successful producer in his own right and son of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, will be chairman and CEO. Former NBCUniversal chief Jeff Shell will take the helm as president, and the pair has said they intend to make Paramount a streaming powerhouse. They also propose slashing $2 billion in costs from the company, which could mean layoffs.

Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger will receive the Ad Council’s Award for Public Service at its Public Service Award Dinner on December 5 at the Glasshouse in New York. “Under Bob’s leadership, Disney has continued its longstanding commitment to public service and social impact. Bob is a role model for so many in the industry and we look forward to celebrating his legacy of outstanding corporate citizenship,” said Lisa Sherman, President and CEO of the Ad Council. Iger served as CEO and Chairman of The Walt Disney Company from 2005 to 2020, then as Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board before his return as CEO in 2022. During his tenure, he has expanded Disney’s portfolio through strategic acquisitions including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and 21st Century Fox. Iger’s management earned Disney recognition as one of Forbes’ “Most Reputable Companies” and Fortune’s “World’s Most Admired Companies.”

President Biden continued to double down on his plans to continue in the presidential race, calling in to MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” program Monday, telling hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, “I’m not going anywhere,” and asking for critics to challenge him at next month’s upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Biden also said that those who don’t believe he can beat Trump should run against him. “Announce for president, challenge me at the convention,” he said on the morning talker.

Programming kicks off on June 14 with chief Washington anchor Leland Vittert hosting a special edition of “The Hill” from 10a-11a live on location from the convention arena. Paramount Pictures’ original comedy “IF, will be available to stream on the service beginning July 9 in the U.S. and Canada. The film’s availability in additional international Paramount+ markets will be announced at a later date. “IF” debuted in theaters in May and stars Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, and John Krasinski.

FOX Nation said it will debut a new weekly series — “Here’s the Deal with Kellyanne Conway” — on July 11, with a new episode dropping each week through the presidential election in November. Conway, a FOX News Channel (FNC) contributor and former White House senior counselor, will provide an in-depth look into the major topics driving the election cycle, including predictions for 2024, the role of Independents in the election and the top issues impacting the ballot, including inflation, immigration, and abortion.

The HBO Original documentary Wild Wild Space,” directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Ross Kauffman (“Born into Brothels”), debuts July 17 at 9p on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Inspired by the New York Times best-selling book “When the Heavens Went on Sale” by technology and space journalist Ashlee Vance, the documentary follows three rocket and satellite companies – Astra Space, Rocket Lab, and Planet Labs – and the quests of their idiosyncratic founders to conquer the burgeoning space industry.

STREAMING

TCLtv+ said its AI film short – “Message in a Bot” – made its online debut Monday on the YouTube and X platforms and will premiere on TCLtv+ on July 22. TCLtv+ announced its AI Film Machine pipeline program last month, and added that its AI-powered love story, “Next Stop Paris” will debut later this summer. “Message in a Bot” was first developed as a research project to pressure-test new tech advancements in AI, but one of the animators wanted to bring it fully to life. Erik Howell, the animator who helped fast track the project, is credited as an EP on the film, along with TCL Chief Content Officer Chris Regina and TCL Chief Creative Officer Daniel Smith.

Peacock will stream vampire romp “Abigail,” starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, and Angus Cloud exclusively on July 19. Other Universal Pictures horror favorites in the streaming queue include “Lisa Frankenstein” and “M3GAN” (+ Unrated). This year Peacock will debut films including “Oppenheimer,” “Trolls Band Together,” Kung Fu Panda 4, “Monkey Man,” “The Fall Guy,” “Despicable Me 4,” “Twisters” and “Speak No Evil.” “Wicked” is slated for debut in 2025.

TECH TALK

Video software provider Synamedia said that NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division will be using its D2C streaming technology to live stream NATO’s 75th anniversary summit to viewers on its website and YouTube. The event will take place from July 9 to 11 in Washington D.C. Quortex Play transcodes the audio from simultaneous interpretation into multiple audio streams, allowing viewers to choose their preferred language.

RETAIL MEDIA

GroupM has created a partnership with UK supermarket chain Tesco’s retail media business to focus on innovation and data-led solutions in the retail media space, according to MediaPost. GroupM will have access to data owned by the grocery giant that will help develop insights and strategic planning capabilities in retail media. Tesco Media and Insight, powered by data science subsidiary Dunnhumby, will have access to GroupM clients to showcase its on-site, off-site and connected store offerings.

ESPN has selected the presenters for “The 2024 ESPYS Presented by Capital One,” scheduled to air live on ABC July 11 at 8p from The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Nearly 1.9 million viewers watched Argentina knock out Ecuador in Thursday’s Copa America quarterfinal match on Fox, making it the most-watched Copa America non-U.S. quarterfinal telecast in U.S. English-language TV history. EXECUTIVE MOVES

Nielsen’s content-solutions arm Gracenote has named veteran media and tech executive Jared Grusd as CEO. Grusd reports to Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao. Sujit Das Munshi, who has led Gracenote as general manager since November 2022, becomes the unit’s chief operating officer. Grusd was most recently CEO of educational technology company Ethiqly AI and has served as chief strategy officer at Snapchat parent Snap, CEO of HuffPost and chief legal officer at Spotify.

ABC News has named Rick Klein as its Washington Bureau chief, according to Variety, filling a post that has been vacant since April when Jonathan Greenberger left to become EVP of Politico. Klein will report to Debra OConnell, the Disney executive in charge of ABC News and ABC local stations.
