Cynopsis 07/06/26: Comcast Pulls the Trigger on NBCU Spinoff

Cynopsis
Monday July 6, 2026

Good morning and welcome back to Cynopsis, your essential morning read. We took a brief Fourth of July hiatus — and the fireworks were plentiful both in the sky and across the industry. Here’s everything that went down while we were out:

· Comcast Pulled the Trigger on NBCU Spinoff
· TVB Slammed Nielsen Numbers
· Mike Rowe Sued Discovery Over “Deadliest Catch”

   IN THE NEWS

Comcast is spinning off NBCUniversal into a standalone publicly traded company.
· The deal ends a 15-year arrangement combining NBCUniversal’s film and TV assets with Comcast’s connectivity business. Comcast took a controlling stake in NBCU from General Electric in 2011 and purchased the remaining 49% in 2013.
· The move follows Comcast’s earlier spinoff this year of cable networks including MS NOW, CNBC and USA into a separate company, Versant.
· Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts will remain involved in leadership at both companies post-split. Mike Cavanagh, currently Comcast co-CEO, will become CEO of NBCUniversal. Michael Angelakis, a former Comcast CFO, will take over as Comcast’s chief executive.
· The deal is expected to close within a year. Comcast will retain a 19.9 % stake in NBCUniversal for up to a year.
· Analysts are speculating about merger partners for Comcast, though an NBCUniversal tie-up with a media rival is tricky given strict broadcast ownership rules.
· Sources tell Reuters NBCU is considering looking into opportunities in digital gaming and new entertainment franchises, while Comcast’s cable and connectivity business would benefit from technological investments that could capitalize on the surge in data centers and AI.
· The Takeaway: Comcast is doubling down on separating its faster-growing broadband and wireless business from legacy entertainment and TV assets, following the same playbook it used with Versant earlier this year, as traditional media companies increasingly split off their content arms to let connectivity businesses operate independently.

The Television Bureau of Advertising (TVB), the trade association representing the local broadcast industry, is pushing back on Nielsen’s Q1 2026 Gauge report, arguing the headline 46.6% streaming share lacks critical context — and in some cases reflects an older methodology.
· Nielsen initially updated the Gauge to align with the ARF DASH study (which found lower broadband-only household penetration than Nielsen’s estimates), producing lower streaming figures. Nielsen then reverted to its old methodology, which the TVB says is inflating streaming share and undercounting linear audiences.
· Nielsen’s public figures use Persons 2+, a measure that includes children with no purchasing power. When filtered to Adults 18+, linear TV’s share rises and streaming’s falls — a more relevant picture for advertisers.
· YouTube can account for a third or more of streaming’s ad-supported viewing in the Gauge. Given its user-generated, short-form nature, TVB argues it should be broken out separately rather than bundled with premium streaming content.
· Sports continue to command strong linear audiences. Broadcast sports across ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, NBC, Telemundo, and Univision/UniMas drew nearly 3.2 billion P2+ viewers in Q1 — up 11% year-over-year. The NBA season posted a 132% spike in broadcast viewers, and the five-game NBA Finals drew a combined audience 30% larger (P2+) than last year’s full seven-game series.
· The Takeaway: TVB is making the case that if Nielsen’s Gauge uses a different (and less current) methodology than its national TV estimates, advertisers are comparing apples to oranges when evaluating broadcast vs. streaming.

The Supreme Court declined to block a federal court order requiring former Fox News correspondent Catherine Herridge to identify a confidential source or face $800-per-day fines — a ruling that has raised alarm among First Amendment advocates and press freedom groups.
· Herridge, who reported for Fox News before joining CBS News, had refused to name sources for 2017 stories about an FBI investigation into a Chinese American scientist over suspicions of Chinese military ties.
· A federal judge imposed the daily sanctions after Herridge declined to comply with a disclosure order, and her appeal to the high court was turned away in a brief, unsigned order with no stated rationale (standard practice for emergency rulings).
· Justice Brett Kavanaugh was the sole noted dissent, signaling he would have sided with the journalist.
· The Takeaway: The case carries significant implications for how reporters protect sources, particularly in the absence of a federal shield law.

Mike Rowe is taking Discovery to court. The “Dirty Jobs” host and his production company Lab Rat are claiming Discovery Talent Services stiffed him on narration fees for at least 51 “Deadliest Catch” spinoff episodes. The tab? Over $2 million. Rowe has voiced the crab-fishing series since 2005. A 2020 deal locked in $40,000 per episode under a pay-or-play clause — meaning Discovery owed him the cash whether they called him or not. They didn’t pay. He’s not letting it go.

   THE BUZZ

MS NOW’s “The Weekend: Primetime” has ended its run. The program is the latest casualty in a broader weekend realignment at the network, as taped video podcasts fill more airtime.
· Alex Witt, a network stalwart since 1999, has announced her departure later this summer.
· MS NOW President Rebecca Kutler framed the changes in a staff memo as a reallocation of weekend resources to support a “significant investment” in the network’s direct-to-consumer offering, along with new programming, content partnerships, and live audience experiences. She said the move would affect “a small number of employees.”
· “Crooked Media on MS NOW,” which launched in February and pulls highlights across Crooked Media’s podcast lineup, is cited as the network’s strongest taped-series launch among total viewers in three years and in the 25–54 demo in four years — a bright spot the memo notably highlights.
· The Takeaway: MS NOW is thinning its weekend linear lineup to redirect resources toward a forthcoming DTC product — a familiar playbook as legacy cable networks reckon with shrinking traditional audiences. The Crooked Media partnership’s early ratings performance suggests the network sees content deals as a key lever even as it cuts in-house talent costs.

The FCC is set to vote on a massive mid-band spectrum auction. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr announced the Commission will vote July 22 on an order to auction a major block of mid-band spectrum next year.
· The FCC will auction 160 MHz of Upper C-Band spectrum (3.98–4.14 GHz)
· The order would harmonize terrestrial wireless operations across the full C-Band, creating a 440 MHz “super-band” (3.70–4.14 GHz).
· The move follows Congress restoring the FCC’s spectrum auction authority via the One Big Beautiful Bill.
· Carr credited early coordination with the FAA and broader Trump administration for keeping the effort on schedule
· The Takeaway: The auction is framed as a cornerstone of U.S. next-gen connectivity strategy, with Carr promising faster speeds, lower consumer prices, and increased competition as the payoff.

   PRODUCTION

Ashley Tisdale is bringing her viral “toxic mom group” saga to Netflix. The “High School Musical” alum will EP and is expected to star in “Toxic Moms,” a half-hour comedy in development about a sleep-deprived new mom drawn into a clique of wealthy mothers who reveal their darker side. Sabrina Jalees (“Search Party”) penned the script; Ali Wong (“BEEF”) is on board as EP and eyed to direct. The project stems from Tisdale’s January essay in The Cut detailing her real-life experience being iced out by a celebrity mom clique.

Starz buried the competition for “Bone Parish.” After winning a heated bidding war, Starz is adapting Bone Parish — BOOM! Studios’ supernatural crime graphic novel — with Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson exec producing via his G-Unit Film & Television, deepening his ongoing partnership with the network. Running the show: Diane Ademu-John and Declan de Barra (“Dune: Prophecy”) as co-showrunners and EPs, joined by BOOM!’s Stephen Christy and Mette Norkjaer.

Paramount+ has ordered a new docuseries chronicling the Texas Tech University football team, from director and showrunner Micah Brown (“Coach Prime”). Produced by Skydance Sports, the four-parter is expected to kick off ahead of this year’s college football season.

Warner Bros. Animation is bringing back Barnabas Collins, the tortured vampire at the heart of campy cult classic “Dark Shadows,” as an adult animated series now in development. The gothic soap opera, which originally aired on ABC from 1966-71, has gotten the big screen treatment, too — in 2012, Tim Burton directed a film starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas.

Starz has signed on as co-production partner for “Maya,” a six-part drama commissioned by Channel 4. The series will air exclusively on Starz in the U.S. and Canada, with a premiere on Channel 4 in the UK and Ireland.

Blink49 Creator Studios and 1Community are co-financing an untitled documentary about the New York Knicks’ first NBA championship in over half a century, directed by Travon Free (“Two Distant Strangers”) via his The Unreasnble banner, in partnership with Outerboro Films.

HappyNest Entertainment announced an expanded development slate featuring legacy and original IP. The slate includes the youth brand Space Camp, projects based on the works of author R.L. Stine, and the graphic novel series Louie and Bear, which are currently in early development.

Adult Swim greenlit “Heist Brothers,” an animated action comedy from Genndy Tartakovsky (“Dexter’s Laboratory”). The series, following three bank-robbing frog brothers, is in production at Cartoon Network Studios.

   SPORTS REPORT

Prime Video Sports has NBA Summer League locked down — 38 games, 10 straight days, July 9–18. It all tips off in Las Vegas on Thursday, July 9 at 3:30 p.m. with the Timberwolves taking on the Pelicans.

Padel Time TV has struck a deal with Samsung TV to launch in the UK for the first time, marking the latest step in its ambitious global rollout strategy. The UK launch follows Padel Time TV’s debut in India earlier this month on JioTV and JioTV+, with further international expansion planned this year.’

Horizon Sports & Experiences (HS&E) and TOGETHXR are growing out IX to Five, the joint venture launched earlier this year to grow the business of women’s sports, with new audio, video and event programming. IX to Five has added “Unsupervised with Syd and TP” to its content slate. The video podcast is hosted by former WNBA teammates and best friends Sydney Colson and Theresa Plaisance, who cover sports, reality TV, internet culture and life advice. The show joins “Crashing” with the StudBudz — pro basketball players Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman — and tentpole-event coverage from Lily Shimbashi, founder of Sportsish, on the IX to Five roster.

Prime Video tapped Las Vegas Aces point guard Chelsea Gray to serve as a WNBA on Prime player contributor. Gray will make select appearances during the 2026 WNBA season.

   BUNDLE UP

NBCUniversal has added Starz to the bundle pile. Select Peacock subscribers can now tack on the “Outlander” and “Power” streamer for $11.99 a month. The add-on will be available to Peacock’s select, premium, and premium plus tiers — the latest sign that even standalone Starz is leaning into bundling as a growth lever. “The Takeaway: As churn-weary streamers chase bundling as the new retention play, Peacock just made itself a one-stop shop for premium add-ons — and gave Starz a built-in distribution boost in the process.

   COMING UP

“A Prince in Paradise: A Royal Wedding” premieres Thursday, July 30 on Great American Pure Flix, and on Great American Family and GFAM+ on Saturday, August 1 at 8 p.m. The film is the third in the “Prince in Paradise” franchise.

   THINK FAST

Mirage Digital and Carwow are teaming up to launch a dedicated Carwow channel on Samsung TV Plus. The 24/7 channel, fronted by automotive personality Mat Watson, draws on Carwow’s library of more than 10,000 hours of content, which has generated upwards of 6.4 billion impressions to date. Programming includes drag races, technical reviews and vehicle comparisons aimed at Carwow’s global audience. “This is the moment creator-led media crosses over into mainstream television,” said John Littell, co-CEO of Mirage Digital, in a statement. “Partnering with Samsung TV Plus gives fans a premium TV experience and gives advertisers access to a highly engaged audience they can’t reach anywhere else.”

   RATINGS

The USMNT’s World Cup Round of 32 victory on Wednesday drew 24.4 million viewers for Fox, FS1 and Tubi, making it the most-watched soccer telecast in English-language U.S. history. Peak audience: 31.883 million viewers from 9:45-10:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, Mexico’s Round of 32 victory over Ecuador delivered an 18.9 million Total Audience Delivery (TAD) on Telemundo and Peacock, making it the most-watched soccer match in total audience in Spanish-language media history. Mexico vs. Ecuador also delivered a 35% increase over Mexico’s previously most-watched match record set on June 18. That’s in addition to the 10.4 million viewers English-language viewers who watched the match on Fox.

No surprise here — World Cup soccer dominated the ratings the week of June 22, taking up 7 out of the top 10 viewership slots. Fox’s Turkey-US match on Thursday topped the chart, with 17.02 million total viewers. “ABC World News Tonight” nabbed slots 3 (7.86 million viewers) and 4 (7.27 million), while “NBC Nightly News” placed tenth with an audience of 6.34 million.
