The House Energy and Commerce Committee cancelled a scheduled markup of the American Privacy Rights Act, which had drawn heated criticism from dozens of groups. On Wednesday, the Interactive Advertising Bureau had voiced its concerns, saying the APRA’s classification of ordinary browsing history as sensitive data demanding opt-in consent could “severely impact the availability of free online content and services.” A letter to committee Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Ranking Member Frank Pallone also pointed out the impracticality of the exemption criteria for small businesses, which could hinder their growth and sustainability.

Social media ranked as the most “meaningful” channel in people’s lives in “2024 Society Say,” a Havas Media survey about consumer perspectives on culture and media. Social media was followed by TV, search, websites and newspapers. On perceived benefits derived from media, respondents cited search as number one in simplifying lives, followed by social media and websites. TV ranked first in entertaining, followed by social media and video on demand. For engagement, social media was number one, followed by TV. When it comes to marketing, 85% of consumers agreed advertisers have a role in maintaining ethical and transparent us of consumer data, and 84% believe advertisers should prioritize media publishers that provide accurate and fact-checked content.

WPP was in talks with KKR about selling a majority stake in its strategic advisory and communications consultancy, FGS Global, but talks broke off after KKR’s offer was too low, according to The Financial Times. KKR bought about a 30% stake in FGS Global last year. FT said talk of a sale is likely not over.

Netflix renewed dating series “Perfect Match” for a third season. The show pairs singles from other Netflix unscripted series.

Hulu reality series “The D’Amelio Show” will not make it to season four. Season three of the show aired last fall.

HBO and the BBC will co-produce “Lions” (w/t), from creator and executive producer Richard Gadd (“Baby Reindeer”), with Alexandra Brodski (“Somewhere Boy”) and Eshref Reybrouck (“Ferry: The Series”) attached to direct. The drama series is produced by Wendy Griffin (“Limbo”) and executive produced by Tally Garner and Morven Reid for Mam Tor Productions, Gadd, and Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, with Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland. Spanning almost forty years, the show follows the highs and lows of the relationship of two brothers, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults.

Ina Garten, star of “Be My Guest,” hasn’t worn out her welcome at Food Network. The Barefoot Contessa has signed a new, exclusive multi-year deal with the net. “The most coveted invitation is one to Ina’s home to spend time having a meal and hearing all about the extraordinary life she’s had…simply put, Ina is a culinary icon,” said Betsy Ayala, Head of Content, Food, Warner Bros. Discovery. “She has the ability to feed both the mind and body with thoughtful conversations and delicious recipes.”

An untitled drama set in the world of Silicon Valley from Jonathan Glazter (“Succession”) got the green light from AMC. “Get ready for a captivating, enthralling, authentic look behind the curtain of Silicon Valley,” said Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “Jonathan is a massive talent and AMC is lucky to be the home of this, his first series creation brought to life. The show, which chronicles the lives of characters creating the world we will all inhabit, is right here and right now. Truth is stranger than fiction, especially here.” AMC Studios is producing.

Fremantle North America closed a deal with the estate of author James Baldwin (The Fire Next Time, Go Tell it on the Mountain) to develop adaptations of his work for TV and film. Original Productions (“Ice Road Truckers”) will handle documentary projects. “We are deeply honored to bring James Baldwin’s timeless works to a new generation,” said Dante Di Loreto, President of Scripted Programming, Fremantle North America. “We are committed to preserving Baldwin’s legacy while making his powerful narratives accessible and compelling for contemporary audiences. This collaboration underscores our dedication to producing content that entertains and inspires.”

French thriller “A l’ombre des forêts,” from creator and director Cédric Anger (“Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart”) and executive producers Isabelle Degeorges and Christophe Riandee for Gaumont (“Lupin“) is in the works for Apple TV+. The six-parter stars Benoît Magimel (“Pacifiction”) and Mélanie Laurent (“Inglorious Basterds”).

Casting notes: Sarah Michelle Gellar (“Wolf Pack”) will guest star on upcoming Paramount+ With Showtime prequel “Dexter: Original Sin.”…Rosario Dawson (“Ahsoka”) and Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) have joined the voice cast of Netflix’s “Terminator Zero,” launching Thursday, August 9.

Three founders of Jukin Media, Jonathan Skogmo, Mike Skogmo and Anton Reut, are launching Lost In, a media brand for travel enthusiasts. “With Jukin we learned how to build and monetize massive audiences, and we’ll leverage those learnings to focus on travel, a category that’s ripe for disruption and that attracts an affluent, highly-desirable consumer,” said Jonathan Skogmo.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

American Godfathers: The Five Families,” executive produced and narrated by actor Michael Imperioli (“The Sopranos”), airs across three consecutive nights beginning Sunday, August 11 at 8p on The History Channel. The six-hour docuseries explores the inception, rise, and fall of New York City’s five Mafia families.

“Crime Exposé with Nancy O’Dell,” a daily half-hour true crime series, will premiere in syndication on Monday, September 23. Trifecta Entertainment, Scott Sternberg Productions and Tornante Television are partnering on production of the show, which will air on Fox stations in New York, LA, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, Washington DC, Orlando, Minneapolis and Houston along with Sinclair Broadcast Group stations in 52markets. The series is currently cleared in 95% of the US. Other station groups involved in the launch are Nexstar, CBS, Gray, Tegna, Scripps, Mission, Imagicomm and Cox.

New docuseries “The West Coast Hustle” debuts on MTV on Thursday, July 18 at 9p. Recording artist Chanel West Coast is starring and executive producing.

Apple TV+ espionage series “Slow Horses” returns for season four on Wednesday, September 4. Joanna Scanlan (“Getting On”), Ruth Bradley (“Primeval”), Tom Brooke (“The Boat That Rocked”) and James Callis (“Battlestar Galactica”) join the ensemble cast for the new season.

A&E has set the premiere for the two-night documentary event “The Chicano Squad,” chronicling a team of bilingual patrol officers promoted to detectives to form the first all-Latin homicide unit dedicated to tackling Houston’s soaring rate of Latin homicide cases in 1979. The show debuts Monday, September 2 and Tuesday, September 3 at 9p.

Season three of “Y’Africa: Sports Champions in Africa” launches on TAC Monday, July 1 at 7p, with two episodes weekly repeating Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 4:30p and Sundays at 6:30p. The series will be available on Demand Africa beginning October 1.

“Love After Lockup” returns to WE tv on Friday, July 26 at 8p. The new season features seven couples, including two fan favorites from “Love During Lockup.”

COMING UP

Ricky Gervais has planned a tour, “Ricky Gervais: Mortality,” that will run through the end of 2025 and wrap with a Netflix special, his fourth for the streamer. “We’re all gonna die,” said Gervais. “May as well have a laugh about it. Mortality looks at the absurdities of life. And death. Bring it on.”

There will be “Double Trouble” Friday nights on INSP. For the month of August, the network will air movies featuring dynamic duos. Other August stunts include The Good, the Bad and the Mustache, featuring Sam Elliott movies (August 2-4); The Mane Event, featuring red-haired leads (August 10-11); The Bob Squad birthday weekend (Taylor, Mitchum and Redford on August 16-18); and Fess on the Frontier (August 18).

Canel Media announced its ‘Verano Canela’ lineup for 2024, which includes content from the Cine de Oro collection with exclusive Mexican movie classics on Canela.TV, such as “Escuela de Vagabundos,” the newly added Turkish novela “La Dama Rebelde,” original Canela movie co-production “Mi Perfecto Ex,” music and videos in Summer Hits from Canela Music, soccer in “Verano de Gloria” on Canela Deportes and amplified coverage through partnerships with MARCA and FutbolSites.

ESPN will honor athletes and sports leaders with three special accolades during “The 2024 ESPYS,” airing Thursday, July 11 at 8p on ABC. Steve Gleason will receive The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage; Dawn Staley will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance; and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, will receive the Pat Tillman Award for Service.

The Center for Investigative Reporting (Mother Jones) is suing ChatGPT maker OpenAI and its business partner, Microsoft, for using its content without permission or compensation. The lawsuit claims AI-generated summaries is exploitative. “It’s immensely dangerous,” Monika Bauerlein, the nonprofit’s CEO, told The Associated Press. “Our existence relies on users finding our work valuable and deciding to support it.”

“Godzilla X King Kong: The New Empire” starts streaming Thursday, July 4 on Max. A version of the film with American Sign Language (ASL) will also stream on Max the same day. This ASL version of the film was produced exclusively for Max.

Paramount Global has taken down the online archives for ComedyCentral.com, TVLand.com, CMT.com and MTVNews.com. Visitors to the sites are now directed to watch episodes through their TV provider, or sign up to Paramount+. “We have introduced more streamlined versions of our sites, driving fans to Paramount+ to watch their favorite shows,” stated a company spokesperson.

FilmRise is working with Future Today Inc. to develop an Unspeakable-branded streaming app. The app will house the creator’s portfolio of videos, spanning over 200 hours of videos from across his YouTube channels. Since 2021, FilmRise has adapted over 500 videos into broadcast-ready episodes including the repackaged episodes that make up the “Unspeakable” and “UnspeakablePlays” series already in distribution. Future Today Inc., FilmRise’s longtime OTT app technology partner, will design and host the app for FilmRise.

FuboTV has launched its app on Comcast’s entertainment platforms Xfinity Flex, Xumo Stream Box and Xumo TV. The app is also available on Xumo TVs.

Pluto TV will offer the new live streaming channel Wild West TV beginning July 1 in the streamer’s new “Westerns” category, which launches the same day.

SPORTS UPDATE

The Big East Conference inked a new six-year media rights agreement with FOX Sports, the Big East’s television partner for the last 11 years, with NBC Sports and TNT Sports also providing comprehensive basketball coverage for the first time. The new agreement, which will span from 2025-26 through 2030-31, encompasses coverage on FOX Sports (FOX, FS1, FS2), NBC Sports (NBC, Peacock) and TNT Sports (TNT, TBS, truTV and Max).

Sports ad delivery is growing, according to iSpot report “Every Second Counts,” which notes a 12% increase in sports TV ad impressions since 2023, with over 900B ad impressions generated by sports content in the past year (and was 14% of all national linear TV ad impressions). The report also found that among the NFL’s top advertisers, there’s a significant divide between spot-level impressions and average audiences – especially when games are lopsided. iSpot found that 6 of the NFL’s top 15 advertisers saw meaningful impressions under-delivery compared to the ACM metric they likely bought on.

Atlantic Hockey America announced an exclusive three-year media extension with FloSports for AHA men’s and women’s regular season and postseason contests. The agreement will provide FloHockey live and on-demand coverage of events during the 2024-25, 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.

ESPN platforms will serve as the exclusive US media home for the second installment of the DIRECTV Soccer Champions Tour, which includes six matches beginning Saturday, July 27-Tuesday, August 6.

The Esports World Cup will be broadcast globally on DAZN’s platform for free as the streamer becomes a long-term strategic partner with EWC to develop an innovative esports experience. The EWC will feature top esports athletes and clubs at an inaugural event hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The New York Jets will host their fifth annual Nike 11-ON high school football tournament. Forty teams from Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York will compete at the Jets training facility in Florham Park, NJ. The winning school will be honored at the Commanders vs. Jets annual preseason “Play Football” game on Saturday, August 10 which celebrates youth football at all levels.

The NHL, NHLPA, and AstraZeneca will celebrate 9-year-old Las Vegas Golden Knights fan Izzy Woodward prior to Round 1 of the 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft this Friday as a “Hockey Fights Cancer Draft Hero, presented by AstraZeneca.”
