At a town hall on Tuesday, Paramount Global co-CEOs Brian Robbins, George Cheeks and Chris McCarthy updated employees on the state of the company. “We’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the challenges of all the M&A speculation,” said Robbins. “We know what a difficult and disruptive period it has been. And while we cannot say that the noise will disappear, we are here today to lay out a go-forward plan that can set us up for success no matter what path the company chooses to go down.” For starters, the execs said they plan to transform Paramount’s streaming strategy, which would compensate for linear declines. They also said they are looking at selling assets, and have hired bankers to assist the process. Third is achieving $500 million in annualized cost savings by being more efficient with resources, which means layoffs, though the timing and scale of cutbacks weren’t addressed.

A new version of potential privacy legislation banning businesses from serving targeted ads to consumers based on their activity across sites and apps has drawn fire from the ad industry. “We regretfully find ourselves needing to go on record in strong opposition to the discussion draft of the American Privacy Rights Act,” wrote Privacy for America – whose committee members hail from the 4A’s, ANA, and IAB, among others – in a letter sent to House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders. The proposal would “significantly hamper everyday engagement between companies and individuals, cut individuals off from the products, services, information, and resources they enjoy and rely on today, and stifle the innovative American economy,” added the group. The previous version of the bill would have permitted targeting on an opt-out basis.

The Walt Disney Company topped May’s Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge, a cross-platform view of total TV consumption introduced last month. Disney’s share of TV viewing was 11.4%, followed by YouTube (9.7%), NBCUniversal (9%), Paramount (8.8%), Warner Bros. Discovery (8.1%), and Netflix (7.6%). Fox saw the largest month-over-month increase, rising from 6.1% 6.4%.

Jeremy Diamond has been named an international correspondent at CNN. He will be based in Jerusalem. Diamond joined the network in 2014, and has been reporting from Israel, Gaza and the West Bank since the start of the Israel-Hamas war.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Inspired by Taylor and Travis? Hallmark Channel is teaming up with the NFL and Skydance Sports for a holiday movie. “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” begins production next month and will film in Kansas City, Missouri locations, including the GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. Tyler Hynes (“Shifting Gears”), Hunter King (“Two Scoops Of Italy”) and Ed Begley Jr. (“Young Sheldon”) star. “As a club, we pride ourselves on exploring new ways to grow our brand, as well as connect with new audiences,” said Chiefs President Mark Donovan. “This partnership unites two passionate fanbases and gives us an opportunity to show Chiefs Kingdom’s energy and tradition on one of the most-watched channels during the holiday season.”

A documentary focused on Barbara Walters is in the works at ABC News Studios, in partnership with Imagine Documentaries. Directed by filmmaker and journalist Jackie Jesko, the film will feature unaired footage from ABC’s archives and interviews with people who knew and worked with the broadcast legend. “Barbara left her indelible stamp not just on those of us who had the honor of working with her at ABC News but on the entire news industry,” said David Sloan, senior executive producer, ABC News. “With never-before-seen footage and interviews with those who knew her in her private and public lives, this film will shed new light on one of the most famous broadcasters of all time.” Walters died in 2022 at age 93.

HBO handed a straight-to-series order for “Lanterns,” a drama series based on the DC title that was first intended for Max. Chris Mundy (“Ozark”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”) and Tom King (“Mister Miracle”) will co-write with Mundy. Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers. The order comes with word that WBD is moving big-budget series like “Welcome to Derry” and “Harry Potter” from Max to HBO.

CBS is developing an adaptation of German procedural “Einstein,” from Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk (“Monk”). It’s the network’s third stab at the project, centered on the great grandson of Albert Einstein.

Joining the cast of MGM+ sci-fi series “Earth Abides” are Aaron Tveit (“Schmigadoon!”), Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll (“Ghosts”), Elyse Levesque (“Orphan Black”), Luisa D’Oliveira (“The 100”), Birkett Turton (“iZombie”), Hilary McCormack (“Killjoys”) and Jenna Berman (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”). The series will debut in late 2024.

Joseph Fiennes (“Shakespeare in Love”) and Natascha McElhone (“Halo”) are onboard Prime Video’s “Young Sherlock” as the parents of Sherlock Holmes, played by Fiennes’ nephew, Hero Fiennes Tiffin.

Apple TV+ has renewed “The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy” for an eight-episode third season. “To be a real seasoned traveler you need to have a strong sense of adventure and curiosity, and I’m ashamed to say over the past two seasons I’ve developed neither,” said host and executive producer Levy. “But I have to admit I’m having a lot of fun putting in the effort.”

Libertine Pictures has commenced production on “Red Rocks,” a live-action family adventure drama series for BYUtv (USA) and Sky (NZ). Adapted from Kiwi author Rachael King’s novel of the same name, “Red Rocks” follows a boy drawn into a world of mythical creatures.

Filming has begun on “Outrageous,” a six-part series based on Mary Lovell’s biography The Mitford Girls. The drama, created and written by Sarah Williams (“Flesh and Blood”), is made by Firebird Pictures and has been co-commissioned by BritBox International (for North America) and UKTV.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

A four-part historical docudrama on George Washington, hosted and executive produced by Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”), will premiere Monday, July 1 on Fox Nation, with all four episodes dropping that week. “George: Rise of a Revolutionary” combines dramatic re-creations with commentary about the Founding Father.

Docuseries “Down in the Valley” will drop Friday, June 28 on the Starz app, a week earlier than originally scheduled and billed as a special “Early Preview.” The linear premiere remains the same: July 5 at 9p.

“SEAL Team” kicks off its ten-episode seventh and final season on Sunday, August 11 on Paramount+. The series moved to Paramount+ from CBS during its fifth season

Apple TV+ psychological thriller “Disclaimer,” starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, premieres with two episodes on Friday, October 11, with new episodes dropping weekly through November 15. Blanchett plays a journalist who discovers she’s the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets.

Microsoft Advertising is extending its partnership with Integral Ad Science, providing post-bid third-party brand safety and suitability, viewability, and invalid traffic measurement across Microsoft’s advertiser solutions, including the Microsoft Advertising Platform and Microsoft Invest. It’s the first time that advertisers will have verification reporting on Microsoft’s proprietary audience data.

Yahoo DSP is expanding its measurement capabilities through strategic partnerships with Comscore, iSpot, and Samba TV. “By partnering with industry leaders we are empowering our clients with the tools they need to more effectively and efficiently measure and optimize their CTV campaigns,” said Adam Roodman, SVP of Product Strategy and Management at Yahoo. “These partnerships reflect our commitment to innovation and excellence in ad measurement across all channels.”

COMING UP

Clear the Shelter, NBCUniversal Local’s nationwide pet adoption and donation initiative, returns for its tenth annual campaign starting August 10. NBC and Telemundo stations across the nation are partnering with animal shelters and rescues in their communities to promote pet adoption and raise funds for participating shelters and rescues.

It will be Christmas in July on Cowboy Way Channel. Starting July 7 with “Christmas in the Smokies,” holiday films will air each Sunday at 6p and 8p.

FOX News Channel’s “FOX & Friends” will run a special series highlighting potential Republican VP picks and their significant others beginning today. First up: Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and his wife Usha Vance in Cincinnati, OH.

MyBundle and Outdoor Sportsman Group announced a distribution agreement for OSG’s MyOutdoorTV SVOD service. The agreement includes billing integration in the MyBundle Streaming Marketplace.

SPORTS REPORT

Telemundo announced exclusive coverage of all Chivas home matches during the Liga MX Apertura 2024 season, available across Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock, featuring a 1-hour pregame show and a 30-minute postgame show for every match on Universo and Peacock.

The NHL and Sphere Entertainment shared new details about the upcoming 2024 Upper Deck NHL Draft. Firsts for Sphere include:
· The first live televised event from inside Sphere, and the first time content on the interior display plane will be optimized both for the fans in the venue, and the viewing audience at home
· Separate from the original content the Company creates for The Sphere Experience, the NHL Draft marks the venue’s first live event in which Sphere Studios led the design and creation of content for both the interior display plane and the Exosphere
· The first time the events happening live inside the venue will be incorporated into real-time content to be displayed on the Exosphere

Tennis Channel will offer nightly coverage during the two weeks of Wimbledon, beginning at 5p most evenings July 1-14. In all, the network plans close to 65 unique hours for the event, including six-hour and four-hour match segments, analysis, interviews, news and feature reporting.

The 2024 NHL Awards ceremony airs live from Fontainebleau Las Vegas on Thursday, June 27, 7p on ESPN and ESPN+. Comedian Matt Friend hosts.

FloSports has extended its agreement with Bradenton Motorsports Park drag racing facilities through 2028 to serve as the exclusive media partner for Snowbird Outlaw Nationals, the US Street Nationals and a third marquee race each year.

ITV Studios’ “The Chase” is set to expand its European footprint with new local versions licensed in Slovenia for POP TV and Romania for Pro TV. The series is in 21 territories to date.
