   IN THE NEWS

YouTube is a different beast … right? MrBeast – or Jimmy Donaldson, if we must give him a real name – is the first individual YouTube influencer to amass 500 million subscribers on the platform. The content creator released a special video over the weekend to celebrate the milestone, which is also testament to the merging worlds of the creator economy and traditional television.

To boost platform monetization, YouTube has invested a lot of time and effort convincing brands that it deserves a slice of the massive marketing budgets and the higher pricing typically earmarked for traditional TV. Mr. Beast’s massive fanbase is also part of YouTube’s engagement story. YouTube often touts the high engagement it sees when viewers and fans interact with their favorite influencers, including during live streams and/or on the big screen on the living room wall.

Game on! Versant Media, the cable company that spun off from NBCUniversal earlier this year, is focusing on women’s sports. Versant committed tens of millions of dollars to carry the WNBA, LPGA and other women’s sports programming. It also branded USA Sports as the home to multiple top women’s teams.

· The backstory: Comcast created Versant, which also includes the TV channels CNBC, Fandango and MS NOW (formerly MSNBC), to separate shrinking cable networks from fast-growing digital properties such as the Peacock streaming service. Moving forward, Versant is homing in on sports to grow its cable portfolio, citing sports and news as the majority (60%) of its total viewership in 2025.
· The emphasis on women’s sports is tactical because they attract a growing and diversified audience mix. Plus, women’s sports come with a lower price tag for airing rights, which can give networks a bigger bang for their buck.

Today’s Trivia Question
Which Netflix original series is really a reimagined reboot of an Australian teen drama from the ‘90s? (Email answers to trivia@cynopsis.com and include your name, company and city. Answers limited to four per time zone.)

Answer to Our Last Trivia Question

Netflix’s “Is It Cake?” Season 2 winner Elizabeth Rowe successfully constructed her cake to look like what realistic object? “A toolbag; a Doc Martens boot.” During Season 2, Rowe, also known as the “Stitch Witch,” baked and sculpted several cakes that resembled recognizable everyday items such as a toolbag and a Doc Martens boot – both of which helped her secure the win.
