Ad spend on total video grew 4% year-over-year in 1Q24, according to Guideline. The increase was driven by digital video, which was up 20%, while linear TV dipped 7%. Streamers Disney+ and Netflix saw increased advertising investment of 210% and 135%, respectively, within the same timeframe.

No deal yet – but IATSE agreed to meet with Hollywood studios again after negotiations for new labor contracts on Wednesday failed to bear fruit. The union said talks on the Hollywood Basic Agreement could resume as early as next week. Negotiators for the Area Standards Agreement, covering productions outside of LA, Chicago, New York and San Francisco, are set to resume talks later in June. The current IATSE contract expire July 31.

YouTube is adjusting its policies on gun content. Videos showing how to remove safety devices on firearms will be prohibited, and those showing homemade guns, automatic weapons and accessories like silencers will be restricted to users 18 and older. Manhattan DA Alan Bragg was among those applauding the move. “We have heard firsthand from young individuals that YouTube’s algorithm is driving them to the world of illegal and 3D-printed firearms, which is having a direct impact on the safety of Manhattanites,” Bragg said in a statement.

Sponsorship revenue for the National Hockey League is up 10% versus last year, to a record $1.4 billion, according to a report from SponsorUnited. Topping brand sponsorship for NHL teams is the financial services category, followed by beverage-alcohol; business services; healthcare; and retail. The average sponsorship spend across all categories is $50 million.

BET+ ordered a second season of darkly comedic “Average Joe.” Round two of the series starring Deon Cole will start production in late 2024.

Prime Video has ordered “Countdown,” from Derek Haas, via his overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios. Jensen Ackles (“Supernatural”) is attached to star as an LAPD officer recruited to join a secret task force.

Jessi Klein (“Inside Amy Schumer”) inked a two-year overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. “Jessi is not only hilarious but brilliant,” said Lauren Stein, EVP and Head of Creative, SPT. “Her writing is equal parts funny and emotional, and undeniably authentic. We are thrilled to have her join the Sony family and can’t wait to partner on bringing her next projects to life.”

Banijay UK has acquired independent scripted production company Caryn Mandabach Productions. CMP’s slate of projects and back catalog are moving to Banijay UK, which will manage all future series, spin-offs and brand ventures resulting from that IP, including the recently greenlit “Peaky Blinders” Netflix movie. Mandabach will have a first-look agreement with Banijay UK under her new Conduit Productions.

UK production company Man Alive Entertainment, launched in 2015, has filed for voluntary liquidation amid the slowdown in orders for unscripted content. Man Alive projects included “Dolly Parton: Here I Am” and “The Faking Dead,” among others.

Jennifer Love Hewitt (“9-1-1”) will star in, direct and executive produce Lifetime movie “The Holiday Junkie” (w/t), part of the net’s “It’s a Wonderful Lifetime” movie slate. Hewitt’s husband, Brian Hallisay, will co-star and their children will also appear in the film. “The Holiday Junkie” is produced for by Elman Films in association with MarVista Entertainment

Dentsu has teamed with producers Rovio Entertainment Corporation, SEGA, and Prime Focus Studios for “Angry Birds Movie 3.” Why the partnership? “Innovation is part of dentsu’s DNA and we are always looking for new and exciting projects to deliver differentiated, integrated growth opportunities for our clients,” said Jean Lin, Global President – Global Practices, dentsu. “We believe in the positive impact of entertainment, creating meaningful connections between people and brands.” One Cool Group and Flywheel Media are also onboard, with DNEG Animation attached as animation partner.

Israel “Izzy” Battres (“Flip or Flop”) landed his own HGTV series. Renovation/occu-series “Izzy Does It,” coming to the network in 2025, will follow Battres and his family as they grow their home renovation and design business.

OUTtv has commissioned scripted drama series “Novelette is Trying,” following a queer, anti-social Black woman, and has renewed “Two Brothers,” “We Three Queens,” “Good Grief” and “Killjoy Comedy” for second seasons.

Prime Video is teaming with Box To Box Films and NHL Productions for a docuseries focused on National Hockey League teams and characters as they pursue the Stanley Cup. The series will feature in-depth interviews with key players, their rivals and those in their inner circle, and reveal what life on-and-off the ice is really like for the league’s top players.

Acorn TV and production partner CJZ announced a season two commission of mystery drama “Darby and Joan. Filming will begin mid-year in Australia.

Casting notes: Morgan Spector (“The Gilded Age”) has boarded the cast of Netflix limited series “Black Rabbit,” as a high-powered lawyer….Perry Mattfield (“In the Dark”) and Frankie A. Rodriguez (“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”) will star in Hulu comedy “Chad Powers.”…Inga Schlingmann (“So Help Me Todd”) and Eve Harlow (“The Night Agent”) landed roles in CBS’ “Watson.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

AMC’s “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol” makes its debut Sunday, September 29 at 9p. Season two picks up where “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” left off.

Talk show “Hart to Heart,” hosted by Kevin Hart, returns for season four on Thursday, June 20. On deck are guests Ben Affleck, George Lopez, Cynthia Erivo, Andy Samberg, Judd Apatow and Niecy Nash.

“The Real Housewives of Orange County” returns to Bravo for season 18 on Thursday, July 11 at 9p.

Quarter-hour animated comedy “Psi Cops” makes its US debut on Sunday, July 7 at midnight on Adult Swim. The series follows a rag-tag group of experts at who investigate alleged sightings of aliens, ghosts, demons, and other hocus-pocus nonsense.

“Impractical Jokers” premieres Thursday, July 11 at 10p, on its new home on TBS. It’s not too much of a change – the series previously ran on truTV, but was being simulcast on TBS.

Season three of Prime Video detective drama “The Mallorca Files” launches Thursday, August 8. All eight episodes will be available on premiere day.

Culinary docuseries “Omnivore” premieres Friday, July 19 on Apple TV+. Created and narrated by chef Rene Redzepi, the show delves into the connection between food and culture.

Belgian firefighter drama “Onder Vuur,” subtitled in English, premieres Tuesday, July 2 on MHz Choice.

The FTC has opened an investigation into Microsoft’s deal with startup Inflection AI to determine whether the tech giant structured the partnership to evade government review, reports The Wall Street Journal. In March, Microsoft hired most of Inflection AI’s employees and agreed to pay $650 million as part of a licensing fee, without an acquisition that would have required review.

Streaming viewers feel good when they tune in – 73% start in a positive mood, according to a study from MAGNA Media Trials and Roku, “From ‘Power On’ to ‘Power Off’ Understanding the Streaming TV Experience.” Other findings include:
· 44% of streamers end up browsing before selecting what to watch even though half of them already knew what they wanted to watch.
· Both news (82%) and sports (82%) were streamers go-to content types when in a positive mood, with both content types above the index average of 75%.
· 3 in 4 streamers face challenges when choosing content and fragmentation across streaming TV platforms.
· 45% are willing to explore more options and 42% are satisfied to watch something else if they can’t find the content they wanted.
· The start of the journey is prime time for ads, so pre-viewing ads are a premium – pre-roll ads (61%) and homepage ads (48%) receptivity compared to only (37%) for Product Placement within content
· Streamers are more likely to discover new content through a streaming service’s homepage (2.8x) or a trending playlist (3.8x) than from a word-of-mouth recommendation.

“The Roast of Tom Brady” was the most-watched streaming title from May 6-May 12, with 1.6 billion minutes viewed. “Grey’s Anatomy” came in second with 1.11 billion minutes viewed, followed by “Bluey” with 1.10 billion minutes viewed.

Peacock has acquired the coming-of-age documentary “Summer Qamp,”
following a group of LGBTQ+ youth at a lakeside camp in Alberta, Canada. The campers enjoy the traditional summer camp experience in a safe, affirming environment. Clea DuVall (“The Intervention”) is set to adapt the documentary as a stage musical.

Hyperlocal free streaming service Zeam is a partnering with IMSA race car driver Ryan Phinny on a new channel, “Fast Lane TV, by Ryan Phinny.” The channel will provide Phinny with new opportunities to connect with his fan base through original on and off-the-track content

Mansa, a streaming platform focused on Black culture, is expanding its content via deals with Mass Appeal, Stingray, Redbull, Freestyle Digital Media, and Oscilloscope. “From vibrant stories told through hip hop and music culture, to extreme sports, and compelling perspectives offered by auteur film and television, we’re ensuring Mansa audiences have access to an expansive and varied library of entertainment that crosses genres,” said David Oyelowo, co-founder of Mansa.

Spanish language channels TODO CINE, TODO NOVELAS, Más Pasiones and WAPA+ have been added to the Fire TV Channels. The FAST channels, owned by Hemisphere Media Group, are available in the “En Español” category of Fire TV Channels.

HBO doc “Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple” traces musician/actor/activist Van Zandt’s career from the clubs of Asbury Park, NJ to arenas and stadiums, to the Bada Bing Club and the Underground Garage, on Saturday, June 22 at 8p.

Nat Geo’s Sharkfest kicks off Sunday, June 30 at 9p with “Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast,” followed by “Shark vs. Ross Edgeley.” The specials will air across Nat Geo, Nat Geo WILD, Nat Geo Mundo and ESPN2.

Historic Alabama baseball field Rickwood, the former home of the Negro Leagues’ Birmingham Black Barons, is the focus of “Rickwood: The Soul of Birmingham,” on the Very Local app. Among local luminaries offering reminiscences are area natives including former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones and actor and comedian Roy Wood Jr.

Sports Illustrated Studios and Spyglass Media Group are partnering to produce a documentary on the life of Julie Krone, the only woman to ever win a Triple Crown race when she rode Colonial Affair to victory in the 1993 Belmont Stakes. Larissa Bills, director/producer of Apple TV+’s “The Super Models,” is attached to direct and produce.

Starz is kicking off the 10th anniversary celebration for “Power” with an immersive two-day fan experience in NYC marking the launch of the fourth and final season of “Power Book II: Ghost.” Fans will be provided with experiences reliving notable “Power” moments.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” starts streaming on Peacock on Friday, June 21. Peacock is also offering “Kung Fu Panda” on the platform, and will add Kung Fu Panda 3 beginning June 26.

You’re never too young to love the Games – NBCUniversal is teaming up with Sesame Street for Olympic Games coverage this summer. Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, and Tango will be featured in activations across Sesame Street’s social media platforms leading into and during the Games, including the US Olympic Team Trials and the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

SPORTS UPDATE

The first year of the 12-team College Football Playoff will kick off with a first-round game on December 20 and conclude with the title game one month later in Atlanta. Nine of the 11 games will be broadcast on ESPN, two first-round games will appear on both ESPN and ABC, and two afternoon first-round games were sublicensed to TNT Sports and will compete against NFL matchups. The 2025 College Football Playoff National Championship will take place January 20 at 7:30p at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

ESPN has signed a multi-year contract extension with NHL Legend Mark Messier. “Mark Messier brings such depth and insight to our hockey coverage, and truly embodies what it means to be the ultimate team player,” said ESPN’s Mark Gross, SVP, Production & Remote Events.

FOX Sports, America’s English-language home for UEFA EURO 2024 and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024, has added former Jamaica National Team and Leicester City legend Wes Morgan, United States Men’s National Team standout Jimmy Conrad and Colombia National Team star Melissa Ortiz to its roster of analysts covering the tournaments this summer. The trio will anchor FOX Sports’ digital coverage from Friday, June 14, to Sunday, July 14, as hosts of the FOX Soccer Now franchise.

ESPN has teamed up with the NHL to launch a game within NHL Blast on Roblox. “ESPN Chaos Run” combines an obstacle course race with hockey gameplay skills. Beginning June 8, fans will see inserts and drop-ins featuring a QR code that leads to the game or the Roblox download page.
