Things are looking up for Dentsu. The company revised its US and global ad spending forecast up four-tenths of a percentage point for 2024, and lifted its US forecast two-tenths of a point, to +4.6% growth in 2025. Its global ad forecast growth for next year remains at 4.2%. “The year has started at a faster pace than previously anticipated, and we predict spend to maintain momentum in the second half of the year with major sporting events drawing global attention,” said Dentsu Global Practice President for Media Will Swayne. “The November US presidential election alone is forecast to account for about a third ($11 billion) of the incremental ad spend in 2024.”

The CW will broadcast college football’s Arizona Bowl, featuring teams from the Mountain West Conference and Mid-American Conference – and a mouthful of a name. The Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl Presented by Gin & Juice by Dre and Snoop will take place in Arizona Stadium in Tucson on Saturday, December 28. “As we continue to bring high-adrenaline sports content to The CW, we are excited to welcome the Arizona Bowl back to our air this December,” said CW President Dennis Miller. “With the star power of Snoop Dogg fueling the excitement, we are looking forward to capturing even more viewers this year in what promises to be an action-packed football match-up.” The game will conclude The CW’s college football schedule for 2024, which features 13 ACC games and 11 games with either Oregon State and/or Washington State. Last year’s Arizona Bowl on CW, sponsored by Barstool Sports, drew over 1.1 million viewers.

The Human Rights Campaign and Showtime are launching the fifth year of “Queer to Stay: An LGBTQ+ Business Preservation Initiative,” aimed at supporting LGBTQ+ small businesses. Applications to participate run through August 31. The initiative launched in June 2020, addressing the financial hardships faced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the fifth iteration of the program, Queer to Stay will reach $1 million in total distributed funding, awarding 100 businesses across the country over its lifetime.

Allen Media Group has launched three of its streaming brands on Amazon’s Fire TV Channels. Fire TV and Echo Show device customers can stream AMG’s Local Now FAST channels, The Weather Channel en Español, and 21 Allen Media Broadcasting television stations.

It’s live: Comcast’s StreamSaver bundle, a $15/month package of Apple TV+, Netflix’s ad tier and Peacock for Xfinity customers, launched Wednesday. Customers can add Comcast’s NOW TV package – with more than 40 live TV channels including AMC, A&E, Hallmark, History Channel, Lifetime and WE tv, as well as more than two dozen FAST channels – for an extra $15 a month.

Which streamer stands to gain the most from bundling? According to a survey by Antenna, that would be Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max. With 72% of respondents labeled “curious” customers – those who have canceled the service in the past or currently subscribe less than six months – bundling gives the service an opportunity to motivate customers to subscribe more “loyally,” says the research company. Apple TV+ has the second-highest percentage of “curious” subscribers (68%), while Hulu and Peacock are tied (65%) followed by Paramount+ (64%) and Disney+ (60%). Netflix has 33% “curious” customers.

Forty-two percent of sports viewers 18+ say they will likely subscribe to live sports streaming service Venu Sports when it becomes available, according to Horowitz Research survey, State of Media, Entertainment & Tech: Viewing Behaviors 2024. Venu Sports will offer live coverage from ESPN and other linear sports networks in a joint venture between Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. Compared to their older counterparts (23%), younger sports viewers (18-34 and 35-49 year-olds, 58% and 57% respectively) are more than twice as likely to subscribe to the new streaming service, and 53% of Latine and 50% of Black sports viewers over-index for likely subscriptions, in comparison to their Asian (40%) and White, non-Hispanic (39%) counterparts.

AMC+ will be bundled with the Philo Core package starting June 12. Philo is now offering 70+ FAST channels outside of the paywall to non-subscribers, and is adjusting the package price from $25/month to $28/month for its Core service for new and returning subscribers.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Prime Video has ordered “Young Sherlock” to series. The origin story of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective will be directed and executive produced by Guy Ritchie.In ‘Young Sherlock’ we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before,” said Ritchie. “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”

Acorn TV and ZDF greenlit a third season of “Chelsea Detective” from Expectation. Filming is underway for the UK mystery drama in and around London with Adrian Scarborough (“Killing Eve”) and Vanessa Emme (“Dublin Murders”) reprising their roles.

On the way from Netflix: “Maschi Veri,” an eight-episode comedy from Banijay label Groenlandia. The series, produced by Matteo Rovere, will drop on Netflix in 2025.

Amazon MGM Studios ordered drama “Band,” about teens in a school marching band. Daniel Barnz and Ben Barnz executive produce under their We’re Not Brothers company, which has an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios. David Stone of TFC Productions also exec produces.

Casting notes: Glenn Close has joined the cast of Netflix film “Wake Up Dead Man,” the third in the “Knives Out” film series starring Daniel Craig…Camila Morrone (“Daisy Jones & the Six”) landed a major role opposite Tom Hiddleston in season two of “The Night Manager,” from the BBC and Amazon. The UK drama is based on the work of John le Carré….Kadeem Hardison (“grown-ish”) has joined graphic novel series “Criminal” as a series regular.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

HGTV’s “100 Day Dream Home” returns Sunday, June 30 at 9p, with a twist: families can have renovations done in three months or less. The series attracted 15.5 million viewers last time around.

Season four of INSP docudrama “Wild West Chronicles” has a new debut date: Wednesday, September 4 at 10p. The season was originally slated to kick off June 20.

“Alien Encounters: Fact or Fiction” will investigate the veracity behind personal accounts of otherworldly experiences starting Wednesday, June 19 at 10p on Discovery Channel. UFO experts Mitch Horowitz and Chrissy Newton use scientific data to dissect real life encounters with extraterrestrial activity and determine whether or not they can be explained.

TLC’s “90 Day Fiance: The Other Way” returns on Monday, July 1 at 8p, as viewers follow six couples who have fallen in love with partners from foreign lands and decide to move abroad to live with them.

Season four of biblical drama “The Chosen,” which began as a crowd-funded project, starts streaming Sunday, June 2 at 7p on “The Chosen” app. Additional viewing options will be announced soon.

Vox Media and The Atlantic are the latest news publishers to sign licensing deals with OpenAI, giving OpenAI access to their content archives to train its chatbots, as well as permitting OpenAI to use current content for ChatGPT queries. “We believe that people searching with AI models will be one of the fundamental ways that people navigate the web in the future,” said The Atlantic’s CEO Nicholas Thompson. As for Vox Media, “This agreement aligns with our goals of leveraging generative AI to innovate for our audiences and customers, protect and grow the value of our work and intellectual property, and boost productivity and discoverability to elevate the talent and creativity of our exceptional journalists and creators,” said Jim Bankoff, co-founder, chair and CEO. News Corp., The AP and DotDash Meredith are among the companies already licensing content to OpenAI.

Weigel Broadcasting unveiled the programming schedule for its new network, MeTV Toons, launching Tuesday, June 25. Daily and weekend curated blocks include a Monday – Saturday lineup of cartoons like Woody Woodpecker, Popeye, Mr. Magoo, Tom & Jerry and others, in their own programming block, presented for a full hour every weekday at 1p, plus an hour on weeknights Monday-Saturday at 10p. The Sunday lineup features Flintstones Family Sunday from 1-3p, and Scooby Doo! Sunday Specials from 3-5p.

Recording artist Karol G will be honored with the “Woman of the Year” award at this year’s “Billboard Latin Women in Music special,” airing Sunday, June 9 at 9p on Telemundo.
