T-Mobile has agreed to buy U.S. Cellular in a deal valued at $4.4 billion. The transaction, which should be completed in mid-2025, will give T-Mobile more than 4 million new wireless customers and additional spectrum to carry data services.

SPIN magazine, originally launched in 1985, is returning to print with its first newsstand edition since 2012 on August 29 and will be the first issue to be edited by founder Bob Guccione, Jr. since he sold SPIN in 1997. Guccione has been consulting with SPIN since mid-2020. SPIN was acquired by Next Management Partners in 2020, is published online and operates SPIN Records, SPIN Films, SPIN Podcasts, SPIN Labs and produces concerts and events at festivals such as Coachella, SXSW and Art Basel.

Magnolia Network unveiled its lineup of cable and streaming premieres for June, including new series “Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse” (cable and streaming), “Getting Lost with Erin French” (cable and streaming) and “Maine Cabin Masters: Building Italy” (cable only); new seasons of “Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines” (cable and streaming), “Motel Rescue” (cable and streaming) and “Beach Cottage Chronicles” (streaming only); and the streaming premiere of “Maine Cabin Masters” season 9. The network renewed three series – “Building Outside the Lines,” “Bargain Mansions” and “Barnwood Builders,” which will all premiere later this year.

The latest film in PBS’ American Masters shorts series – “American Masters Shorts: Love, Jamie” – premieres on June 3 in honor of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. The film depicts Jamie Diaz, a 66-year-old trans woman and artist who has spent nearly 30 years in a men’s prison in Texas. The film reveals how her enduring friendship with volunteer Gabriel Joffe has helped Jamie’s art reach far beyond the prison walls.

HDNET Movies honors the 80th Anniversary of D-Day on June 6 and June 7 with a special marathon of classic war films beginning at 8a with “Ambush Bay,” starring Hugh O’Brian, Mickey Rooney, and James Mitchum as soldiers on a harrowing reconnaissance mission behind enemy lines. Other highlights include a double dose of John Wayne as a PT boat lieutenant on a doomed mission to Manila in John Ford’s “They Were Expendable,” and “In Harm’s Way,” with Kirk Douglas, Henry Fonda, and Burgess Meredith. Alec Guinness and William Holden star in “Bridge on the River Kwai,” winner of seven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor; and Cary Grant and Tony Curtis are submarine sailors in “Operation Petticoat.” June 7 kicks off with an encore of “Bridge on the River Kwai,” followed by “They Died with Their Boots On” with Errol Flynn as Gen. Telemundo daytime shows “Hoy Día” and “En Casa con Telemundo” will present an outdoor concert series “Nissan Conciertos de Verano,” featuring performances from Latin music stars. The series kicks off on May 31 with regional Mexican artist, Chiquis, on “En Casa con Telemundo” at 2p. STREAMING

Spotify will launch a new weekly video podcast, “Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch,” with hosts and NCIS castmates Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly on June 4. In each weekly episode, de Pablo and Weatherly will invite a guest to join them as they rewatch NCIS episodes. Former franchise cast and guest stars making appearances include Sean Murray, Sasha Alexander, Eric Christian Olsen, Jon Cryer and others.

TECH TALK

According to a new study from FreeWheel and MediaScience, consumers don’t get upset with ad interruptions during their favorite shows, but they sure do get bent out of shape over bad ad experiences. In the new study from FreeWheel’s and MediaScience’s Viewer Experience Lab – “Improving the Quality of Ad Experiences” – there was no change in how much viewers enjoyed a program when there were ads present versus when there were no ads present. But nearly 80% said ad latency negatively impacted brand perception and recall; 71% were upset with unnatural ad breaks and 33% were bothered by slates (a static or animated image that can appear in place of a commercial during a live stream ad break). Unnatural ad breaks also led to higher ad intrusiveness (+16%) and decreased brand recall (-14%), according to the study and slates were seen to negatively impact perceived quality of surrounding ads (-3%). “It is our responsibility as an industry to work towards building better viewer experiences, which in turn will help brands connect with audiences in premium environments. We need to get this right not just for the advertisers, but for all of us as viewers,” said FreeWheel GM Mark McKee.

Radio is still the most popular audio platform, with 57% of respondents in a recent survey using the service within the last 30 days, while 72% reported listening to any streaming audio service and 46% confirming they listened to ads on streaming audio service, according to a recent survey by Involved Media. Spotify, followed by YouTube Music, Pandora and Amazon Music were the most popular streaming services. About 51% of radio listeners are also streaming audio with ads, and 63% of ad-supported streaming audio listeners are also listening to radio with half of ad-supported audio consumers listening daily. More than half (51%) of respondents regularly watch or listen to podcasts with the top genres being news and politics (40%), entertainment and pop culture (39%), comedy (38%) and sports commentary (29%) and 24% report listening daily, 47% weekly and 29% monthly.

GOING GLOBAL

Sky has purchased rights to Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios drama series “The Penguin,” starring Colin Farrell. Sky will air the series, which will launch in the fall on Max, Sky Atlantic and Sy’s streaming service Now in the U.K., Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.

The latest season of “Ugliest House in America,” which debuted April 22 on HGTV, attracted more than 10 million total viewers. The series, starring comedian and actress Retta, averaged a .47 live plus three-day rating among Adults 25-54 and a .64 L3 rating among Women 25-54. It also averaged a .49 L3 rating among upscale Adults 25-54 and a .65 L3 rating among upscale Women 25-54. In addition, “Ugliest House in America” ranked as a Top 5 non-news/sports cable program with Women 25-54, upscale Women 25-54 and upscale Adults 18-34 in the timeslot.
