The CW ordered a second season of Canadian procedural “Wild Cards,” which has also been renewed by originating network CBC. The series is produced by Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures and Piller/Segan.

Among the top streaming original films released in 2023, ratings were highest for films featuring casts that were from 41-50% BIPOC. That’s according to the latest UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report, which notes that BIPOC households were overrepresented as household viewers (compared to their population share) for nine of the top 10 films and for 18 of the top 20 films (ranked by total household ratings) released via streaming platforms in 2023. In addition, women represented the majority of viewers (exceeding their population share) for nine of the top 10 streaming films and for 17 of the top 20 streaming films. What’s the takeaway? “To gain a complete perspective of the current Hollywood ecosystem, the audience must be taken into consideration,” concludes the report. “Not understanding the power of an increasingly diverse audience and the opportunities that exist in the current setting would be a grave mistake for the film industry. This is definitely a moment for innovation in Hollywood.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Casting has been announced for Paramount+’s upcoming series “Dexter: Original Sin” (fka “Dexter: Origins”). Patrick Gibson (“Shadow and Bone”) will play Dexter Morgan; Christian Slater (“Mr. Robot”) will play Dexter’s adoptive father and homicide detective; and Molly Brown (“Senior Year”) will take on the role of Dexter’s younger sister. Clyde Phillips (“Dexter”) will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series, which takes place 15 years before viewers first met Dexter.

Production is underway on season two of Paramount + drama “Lioness,” the espionage thriller from Taylor Sheridan. The series, filming in Texas, features lead and executive producer Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira, Genesis Rodriguez, Michael Kelly, Morgan Freeman, and executive producer Nicole Kidman.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

HBO’s “Fantasmas” debuts Friday, June 7 at 11p. The comedy from writer, director, and comedian Julio Torres focuses on the fantastical search for a lost gold oyster earring.

Reality show “Family Empire: Houston” arrives Friday, June 28 at 8p on OWN. The eight-parter follows a Texas family across four generations of Black excellence.

National Geographic and Hulu franchise One Day in America returns with Hulu Original “Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown.” The three-part series, telling the story of the religious organization led by Jim Jones, premieres Monday, June 17 on Hulu and will air on National Geographic on August 14.

Two very different new unscripted series are on the way to Discovery next month. “Six Schizophrenic Brothers” exploring the true story of a case that made medical history, premieres Monday, June 10 at 8p, and “Sin City Tow,” following Las Vegas tow truck drivers, launches Tuesday, June 18 at 9p.

Coming back to Discovery are “Deadliest Catch,” kicking off season 20 on Tuesday, June 11 at 8p, and “Hoffman Family Gold,” returning Friday, June 14 at 9p.

“The Great Food Truck Race” returns with a new route across the country’s Gulf Coast with a fresh roster of aspiring food truck operators battling to make the best food on wheels. “The Great Food Truck Race: Games on the Gulf” premieres Sunday, June 30 at 8p.

OpenAI signed a media licensing deal with News Corp. “Through this partnership, OpenAI has permission to display content from News Corp mastheads in response to user questions and to enhance its products, with the ultimate objective of providing people the ability to make informed choices based on reliable information and news sources,” said the companies. Among News Corp. properties are The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, and New York Post.

In the first quarter of 2024, large US advertisers expanded their overall ad spend by 7% compared to the year prior, with digital media up 18%, the biggest quarterly growth since 1Q22, according to data from Guideline. Programmatic buying channels grew 33% in the quarter, versus direct-sold insertion orders at +12%. Within Programmatic channels, advertisers increased spending 19% on Open Exchanges over the same period last year, while they added 52% to Premium Programmatic budgets, with Private Marketplaces growing at a faster rate than Programmatic Guaranteed. “Advertisers continue to shift dollars from open exchanges and into premium programmatic deals in search of top-quality inventory, better targeting options, and safe environments for their brands,” said Alberto Leyes, Head of Product Strategy, Data Solutions at Guideline.

Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy has taken a 7.7% stake in BuzzFeed, according to a filing from the SEC in which the former Republican presidential candidate says he believes media company’s shares are “undervalued and represent an attractive investment opportunity.”

TNT Sports and ESPN have reached a five-year deal that gives TNT two first-round College Football Playoff games starting later this year, then adds two quarterfinal games each year beginning in 2026 through the end of the agreement. ESPN and its networks will present all other College Football Playoff games. “We’re confident in the reach and promotion that this new partnership will provide as we enter the new, expanded playoff era,” said Rosalyn Durant, ESPN EVP, Programming and Acquisitions. It’s not the first time TNT and ESPN parents Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney have agreed to play ball – the two companies, along with Fox, are partners on upcoming sports streaming platform Venu Sports.

Long-time ESPN correspondent Ed Werder is leaving the network – but not necessarily the world of sports. “For 26 years, I’ve had the privilege of reporting on the NFL and the Dallas Cowboys while holding an NFL microphone,” posted Werder on X. “But that time is coming to an end. I will immediately begin considering other opportunities to continue my work covering the NFL.”

FOX Sports, US home for the UEFA EURO 2024, has enlisted broadcast journalist Jules Breach to anchor the network’s inaugural presentation of the tournament, from Friday, June 14 to Sunday, July 14.

The criminal trial of Donald Trump gave a boost to cable news ratings. From April 15-May 16, Fox News had a 14% increase year-over-year to average 1.46 million total viewers, while MSNBC rose 21% to hit 1.06 million viewers, and CNN saw a 27% lift to reach 563,000.

ABC’s “American Idol” wrapped season 22 with season highs, growing from the previous week’s episode in both Total Viewers (+8%, to 5.64 million) and A18-49 (+3% , to a 0.65 rating).

Netflix released a report saying viewers watched 90 billion hours of its content from July to December 2023. The top series, “One Piece,” counted 72 million views, followed by German limited series “Dear Child,” with 52.6 million. Non-English content accounted for about one third of viewing.
