PR Guy Goes to the “Other Side”

Long-time media and advertising industry PR guy Mark Braff, who retired in late 2020, now finds himself in what he calls the “odd” position of being the interviewee rather than the interview facilitator, as he had been for 40+ years.

Braff has authored a book, “Sons of Baseball: Growing Up With a Major League Dad,” which was released by Rowman & Littlefield on May 10. The book features a foreword by Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. and interviews with 18 sons of former major league baseball players, including those of Yogi Berra, Larry Doby, Mariano Rivera, Boog Powell, Jerry Hairston, Roger Maris, and others. The sons talk about what it was like growing up in such a unique and oftentimes crazy environment.

“I spent four decades counseling clients on speaking to the media, and I guess you can say it’s now time for me to put my money where my mouth is,” Braff told us. “For example, when a client would complain about an error in paragraph 14 of an otherwise great story, I would say to take a step back and consider the story’s overall — positive — impression and impact. Well, I’ve already had to take my own advice, as an otherwise great story about my book included three notable errors. It bothered me for a moment until I remembered my own advice. I must say, it’s a bit odd being on the ‘client side’ of this equation.”
