Cynopsis Media Special: 2014Black History Month Programming Guide

By Lynn Leahey

The February celebration of the contributions and achievements of African-Americans started in 1926, to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Fifty years later, February was officially recognized as Black History Month by President Gerald Ford, who asked the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Television is doing its part, with special events and programming throughout the month.
