IN THE NEWS

Netflix won approval to build a $900 million production facility at the Jersey Shore. The streamer is paying $55 million for a 292-acre site on the former Fort Monmouth military base, with plans for 12 sound stages. “We believe a Netflix studio can boost the local and state economy with thousands of new jobs and billions in economic output, while sparking a vibrant production ecosystem in New Jersey,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer. For New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, it’s just the beginning. “This transformative investment will serve as a cornerstone in our efforts to create a thriving industry from whole cloth,” said Murphy. “As a result of nearly a billion dollars in film production spending, New Jersey will further solidify its status as an emerging national leader in the television and film industries.”

The NFL and Google hammered out a multi-year deal making YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels the exclusive home of the NFL Sunday Ticket package. The agreement, effective in 2023, replaces the NFL’s partnership with DirecTV, which has held the rights since the package’s inception in 1994. “We’re excited to bring NFL Sunday Ticket to YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels and usher in a new era of how fans across the United States watch and follow the NFL,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “For a number of years we have been focused on increased digital distribution of our games and this partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans.” YouTube is reportedly paying $2 billion annually for the rights.
