IN THE NEWS

Top level execs are out at Warner Bros. Discovery as the company continues its restructuring. The responsibilities of Nancy Daniels, who oversaw TNT, TBS and truTV, along with Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and Science Channel, have been handed to ID head Jason Sarlanis, who inherits the T-nets, and TLC’s Howard Lee, who will oversee the former Discovery channels. Creative oversight of the channels under Jane Latman, promoted in March to President, Home & Food Content and Streaming, WBD, will go to Betsy Sanner Ayala (food) and Loren Ruch (HGTV). Matthew Butler, most recently at Travel Channel, and Scott Lewers, who oversees franchise series expansions and tentpole programming at the D-Nets/T-Nets, are also headed for the exit.

“While it is undoubtedly difficult to say goodbye to long-time colleagues and friends, the reorganization we are undertaking will ultimately enable our content teams to share resources, work more collaboratively across brands and genres, and maximize our ability to innovate and create during this dynamic time for our industry,” said Kathleen Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer, US Networks Group, in an internal memo that included high praise for the exiting execs. “We intend to work quickly to put the new structure in place and to sync these groups effectively.”

ABC has yanked Christmas special “A Very Backstreet Holiday” amid an allegation that Nick Carter raped a 17-year-old while on tour with the band in 2001. The special, featuring Carter, AJ McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell and Howie Dorough, had been slated to air December 14. Carter has denied the allegation, which his attorney described as a “press stunt.”

Lizzo is filling in for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs as musical guest on the December 17 episode of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” It will be Lizzo’s third turn as musical guest, including a stint as both host and musical guest in April. CNN Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr is leaving the news net. “With the expiration of my contract in the coming days I have made the decision to move on,” said Starr in a memo to staff. Starr joined CNN in 2001.

Kamaria Johnson, a now-18-year-old girl from Kentucky, missing since May 2021 and whose story was featured on the premiere episode of Reelz docuseries “On Patrol: Live” in July, has been successfully reunited with her mother. The teen was found in Memphis, TN. Kylee Chandler, a 13-year-old who went missing from Lexington County, SC, in September, was also reunited with her loved ones; her “Missing” segment aired in November. Each week, the series, produced by Half Moon Pictures, features “Missing” segments that air in conjunction with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and the Black and Missing Foundation.

At the first-ever Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Netflix came out on top with 13 wins. Disney+ nabbed 10 and Apple TV+ took home two. “Launching in 2022, tonight’s ceremony marks the first standalone expansion of the Emmy Award competition since 1979, and establishes a dedicated ceremony separate from the Daytime Emmy Awards, which had been home to children’s and family programming categories,” said Adam Sharp, President & CEO, NATAS. “Children’s & Family content represents the fastest-growing genre that NATAS awards, and this weekend’s ceremonies herald an exciting milestone.” For a complete list of winners, go here.
