Cynopsis: Sports

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 15, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Tim Brando and CBS Sports are splitting up. After 18 years at the network and 16 years as host of College Football Today, Brando announced that he was leaving the company. The news comes after it was revealed recently that The Tim Brando Show would not be returning to CBS Sports Network. A CBS Spokesperson confirmed that “We’ve mutually agreed to allow Tim to pursue other opportunities.” Meanwhile, Brando wrote on his Facebook page that “It was an honor working there. I am looking forward to new opportunities and making many exciting new memories covering sports.”

NBC Sports officially unveiled its roster of commentators for the Sochi Games, with 84 names on deck. That marks the most ever for a Winter Olympics with coverage, of course, spanning NBC, NBCSN, CNBC, MSNBC, USA and NBCOlympics.com. Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira host the Opening Ceremony on NBC on Friday, February 7, at 7:30p, joined by David Remnick with Bob Costas anchoring from the International Broadcast Center. The roster includes Olympians who have won a combined total of 35 Olympic medals along with Al Michaels, who will host the daytime show on NBCSN (weekdays) and NBC (weekends), Dan Patrick and Rebecca Lowe will host NBCSN’s daytime weekday and weekend coverage; while NBC News’ Lester Holt will host NBC’s weekday daytime coverage. Olympians are set to include Scott Hamilton, Nancy Kerrigan, Tara Lipinski, Sarah Hughes, Jonny Moseley, Tanith Belbin, Ato Boldon, Nastia Liukin and Maria Sharapova.

CBS Sports Network is entering the ring with Titan FC to showcase eight live MMA events on the channel this year, starting with Titan FC 27 on Friday, February 28th in Kansas City. “We feel that fans and fighters alike will be the true beneficiaries of the new Titan FC-CBS Sports Network deal,” said Jeff Aronson, CEO, Titan FC. “Our main goal is to put out a product that will bring fans entertaining and competitive bouts and showcase our fighters.” In addition to the television agreement, CBS Sports Network will also live stream of preliminary round fights on its website.

The NFL reports that, for a record fourth consecutive year, the four Divisional Playoff games combined to average more than 34 million viewers, ranking as the four most-watched shows on television for the week, according to Nielsen.

Anthem Media Group officially unveiled its plans for the launch of the 24-hour Fantasy Sports TV Network, which is slated to debut on March 4, 2014. The new platform will deliver content on traditional, “over the top”, online as well as mobile video outlets throughout North America, focusing on interactive fantasy sports programming. Programming will include live studio shows, call-in series, panels, celebrity and expert drafts, reality programming, and on-site commentary from sports venues. Anthem also penned an agreement with SiriusXM Radio to simulcast three daily hours of morning drive-time series RotoExperts in the Morning program from 6-9a on the new network. The network will also be supported by its flagship fantasy property, RotoExperts.com, and sports pop culture site SportsGrid.com.

NBCSN’s Fight Night series returns for the New Year on Friday, Jan. 24, starting at 10p. The main event will feature a ten-round middleweight clash between Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (25-4, 18 KOs) and Patrick “The Machine” Majewski (21-2, 13 KOs).

Universal Sports Network laid out its on-air schedule for this weekend’s Winter Bowl II programming lineup, which starts today and runs through Sunday. Universal Sports will carry 30 hours of winter sports action across seven sports from 23 events around the globe, including the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in Wengen, Switzerland and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy; the FIBT Bobsled & Skeleton World Cup in Igls, Austria; the World Sprint Speed Skating Championships in Nagano, Japan; the European Figure Skating Championships in Budapest, Hungary; and the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup and the FIS Snowboard World Cup in Stoneham, Canada.
