11/28/17: F1 powers branding overhaul; Steelers win drives NBC; ESPN/Twitch partner to Give

Good morning. It’s Tuesday November 28, 2017 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Formula One is giving its branding an overhaul, unveiling a new logo for the first time in 23 years, created by Wieden+Kennedy London. The move, according to the agency, marks the first step of a complete brand redesign for the organization. “Creatively, the challenge was to reposition Formula 1 as a forward-facing entertainment brand, which works across a multitude of channels,” said Richard Turley, executive creative director of content and design. “The new mark aims to embody the core forces of Formula 1 racing: speed, attack, and control; while its sleek, sharp interlocking components celebrate the technical prowess of Formula 1 engineering teams.”
Sunday Night Football scored another win for NBC, as the Steelers win over the Packers generated a 12.2/20 in Nielsen overnight numbers. That marks a 3% climb from last year’s Week 12 SNF gam with top markets that included: Milwaukee 44.3/61; Pittsburgh 40.8/57; Minneapolis 19.8/33; Norfolk 17.4/26; Richmond 16.9/26.
Stadium is partnering with Ring of Honor to bring weekly episodes of its wrestling product to the channel where it will run on Wednesdays. The first ep to re-air run tomorrow night at midnight on the broadcast network, along with digital platforms including WatchStadium.com, the Stadium iOS and tvOS apps, Stadium Android app, Twitter and Pluto TV.
US Club Soccer is playing host to four candidates for President of US Soccer. The event takes place on Nov. 28 at 11:30a CT at the Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport Hotel and will include Paul Caligiuri, Steve Gans, Kyle Martino, and Eric Wynalda with US Club Soccer CEO / Executive Director Kevin Payne moderating with participation from Chairman Phil Wright and the US Club Soccer Board of Directors. “With millions of athletes playing soccer in the U.S., the Federation’s President has a critical role to play in shaping the future of the game with a defined roadmap for growth and success at the grassroots level through the professional ranks,” said Payne, one of the founders of Major League Soccer. “Each candidate brings unique qualifications to drive U.S. Soccer, and we look forward to exploring how our country can position itself as a global leader of the game, especially with the possibility as serving as one of the hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
UC San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield are jumping from the Western Athletic Conference to the Big West Conference as the 10th and 11th members of the league with both joining on July 1, 2020. “The addition of these two outstanding universities will further strengthen the Big West’s position as the preeminent NCAA Division I public university conference for the states of California and Hawai‘i,” said Farrell.  “The 2018-19 academic year marks the 50th anniversary of the Big West Conference and this membership development positions the conference to continue growing and thriving for the next 50 years.”
In scheduling news, ESPN is on deck to carry eight college football conference championship games to wrap up the college football regular season this week starting Friday with Stanford/USC competing for the Pac-12 title at 8p. Saturday sees seven days on the roster, including ABC’s Saturday Night Football at 8p with Miami/Clemson. Other action includes the American Athletic Championship pitting Memphis/UCF on ABC at noon, at the same time as the Marathon MAC Championship featuring Akron/Toledo at noon at ESPN and the Dynacraft Conference USA Football Championship with North Texas/Florida Atlantic ESPN2. The SWAC Championship with Alcorn State/Grambling runs at 4:30p on ESPNU. Other action includes the Mountain West Football Championship with Fresno State/Boise State at 7:45p at ESPN.
Meanwhile, NBC Sports Group offers 20 Premier League matches in six days, beginning today with a special mid-week match slate, as well as Manchester United/Arsenal on Saturday at 12:30p on the broadcast channel. Arlo White calls the match, joined by analysts Lee Dixon and Graeme Le Saux at Emirates Stadium. Today’s action kicks off at 2p with Premier League Live on NBCSN, followed by Leicester City/Tottenham at 2:45p.

SiriusXM recruited that former Cleveland Cavaliers General Manager David Griffin and former Phoenix Suns front office executive Amin Elhassan to its roster of NBA experts on the SiriusXM NBA Radio channel. Griffin will make his debut today at 4p alongside host Joel Meyers and can be heard multiple times every week. Elhassan will join the roster on Dec. 10 and will be on regularly every Sunday from 10a-1p with host Jason Jackson.

Tour-goers will also be able to create their own mock-Olympic interview on the set. In addition, the 30 Rock store will feature Olympic messaging, an Olympic podium, and a special snapchat filter.
The Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics are now bunkmates with BEDGEAR, which will become the Official Sleep Partner of the teams. November 28 also marks the beginning of V Week and Giving Tuesday. Twitch will provide onscreen call to actions and live tracking of donations to the V Foundation at  https://tiltify.com/the-v-foundation, game giveaways, viewer interaction and unauthenticated global access.
Shareablee Sports, a new division being launched today by Shareablee, announced that the Los Angeles Dodgers led MLB in social media during the 2017 season, finishing the season with 27,865,740 total actions — a composite of reactions, comments, shares, retweets and likes – across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, overwhelmingly ahead of the Houston Astros, which finished second with 9,672,803 actions. The Dodgers finished first individually on Facebook and Instagram, while placing third on Twitter when it comes to total actions.

Blizzard opened the curtains to the Overwatch Path to Pro, described as “a system for 2018 that will provide a path for players of all skill levels to grow as competitors and as teammates.” Plans include – beginning in March – Overwatch Contenders expanding beyond North America and Europe, to encompass a total of seven regions with three seasons a yea, adding Austrlaia and South America.  Overwatch APEX, Overwatch Premier Series, and the Overwatch Pacific Championship will become Contenders Korea, Contenders China, and Contenders Pacific, respectively. Meanwhile, Overwatch Open Division returns in January in the same seven regions as Contenders and starting in February, the top four Open Division teams from each region will be invited to compete in that region’s Contenders Trials, an eight-team promotion-relegation tournament for Overwatch Contenders.
Millennial Esports named Bob Reif as President, effective immediately. Reif previously served as Executive Vice President of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Chief Marketing Officer of the Indy Race League, and President of a division of William Morris Endeavor. He was also the Chief Revenue Officer and Chief Marketing Officer for the St. Louis Rams for twelve seasons, overseeing the organization’s growth from a $220M valuation to its current $3.5B valuation. “I see many parallels between the growth of the traditional sports sector and the potential for growth in the emerging Esports sector, with Millennial Esports leading the charge,” said Reif. “I’m confident my experience in the sports arena, particularly in the area of racing, will serve Millennial Esports well, and I’m excited to get started.”
