CYNOPSIS
11.17.14
Good morning. It’s Monday, November 17, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Tonight’s Premieres:
IFC: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World at 8p
NBC: State of Affairs at 10p
Tonight’s Finales:
Discovery Family: Survival of the Weirdest at 8p
Food: Hungry Games at 8p
Prolific writer/producer Glen A. Larson died November 14 of esophageal cancer. He was 77. The Emmy nominee’s string of hits include such memorable shows as It Takes a Thief, McCloud, Magnum, P.I., Knight Rider and Quincy, M.E.
Lisa Berger is exiting as ABC EVP alternative series, specials and late night after a year on the job. Said Berger, former president of entertainment at E!, “I’m thankful for the opportunity to run alternative at ABC, but in the end we found our creative sensibilities weren’t aligned.”
Tale of two families: CBS canceled sophomore comedy The Millers. Moved to Mondays this season, the series drew a 1.5 rating among A18-49 last week. On the flip side, the net gave a vote of confidence to The McCarthys with an order for two more scripts; the newcomer drew 1.4 in the demo for its third outing on Thursday. Alyson Hannigan (How I Met Your Mother) guests on McCarthys’ Christmas episode Thursday, December 18 at 9:30p.
Fox ordered six more episodes of The Mindy Project, for a total of 21. While the comedy delivered a modest 1.1 among A18-49 on Tuesday, it’s almost doubled its Live+SD numbers in 30-day multiplatform play.
Bill Cosby’s scheduled Wednesday appearance on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman was canceled in the wake of revived allegations of sexual assault. Regis Philbin will replace Cosby on the late night talker, which had no comment on the switch. Cosby’s not talking, either. “The fact that [decade-old allegations] are being repeated does not make them true,” said an attorney for Cosby, adding the comedian “does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment. He would like to thank his fans for the outpouring of support.” A canceled appearance on The Queen Latifah Show on October 30 was described as a postponement requested by Cosby, who has a comedy in the early stages of development at NBC (no comment from the net) and a special, Bill Cosby 77, slated to stream on Netflix on Thanksgiving.
As it continued its protracted carriage negotiations with Dish, CBS put up a web site Friday warning the satellite company’s customers it could go dark in network-owned stations in cities including New York, LA and Chicago if an agreement isn’t reached by the current deal’s expiration on November 20. The site notes the programs subscribers would miss, gives contact info for Dish and lists other providers. Responded Dish, “Only CBS can force a blackout of its channels….We are unsure why CBS decided to involve customers in the contract negotiation process.” Who do you think should prevail? Vote in our poll.
The View alum Sherri Shepherd will make an appearance on the ABC daytimer’s rival, CBS’s The Talk, on Monday, December 1. Shepherd surprised former View co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck last week on Fox and Friends, following Hasselbeck’s return to the show after surgery for a tumor in her abdomen.
SAG-AFTRA has reached an agreement with the major nets on a new Network Television Code. “We’ve made significant gains in important areas, including wage increases and improvements in streaming residual rates,” said union president Ken Howard of the deal. Next step: board approval.
BabyFirst net and the National Hispanic Media Coalition have launched "Rising Creators Project," a Latino-themed programming competition. Winner’s show will run on BabyFirst for two years.

The autopsy of a 40,000-year-old creature (dubbed Buttercup) found in remarkably good condition in Siberia is the focus of Smithsonian Channel’s How to Clone a Woolly Mammoth. “Actually coming face-to-face with a mammoth in the flesh, and being up to my elbows in slippery, wet, and – frankly – rather smelly mammoth liver, counts as one of the most incredible experiences of my life,” said paleontologist Dr. Tori Herridge. “It’s up there with my wedding day.” One-hour special premieres Saturday, November 29 at 8p.

Walmart is once again sponsoring Wheel of Fortune’s “Secret Santa Sweepstakes,” and this year Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals will be big winners, too, with a minimum of $300,000 donated during the course of the event. During “Walmart Family Week” (December 8-12) and “Secret Santa” shows (December 15-19), members of the game show’s loyalty program are assigned an ID number that give them a chance to win the same prize as in-studio contestants.
