IN THE NEWS

Who’s the biggest Hallmark Channel fan of them all? The network aims to find out with its inaugural #1 Fan Sweepstakes, which will grant one viewer the title of Chief Fan Officer and a salary of $10,000. The winner will also receive a movie premiere screening party in their hometown with 100 of their friends, a customized greeting from a Hallmark Channel star, and a character named for them in a future movie. Viewers can enter now through December 31.

The seven original cast member of NBC’s “This Is Us” will each get a cool $2 million bonus ahead of the drama’s sixth and final season, reports Deadline. Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz, Susan Kelechi Watson, Justin Hartley and Chris Sullivan will be on the receiving end of the windfall, while Jon Huertas (Miguel), who wasn’t elevated to series regular status until season two, will get $1 million. The cast members had asked for a pay raise from the network and 20th Television during the summer. The new season premieres Tuesday, January 6 at 9p.

Andrea McArdle, Broadway’s original Annie, has dropped out of her role as Eleanor Roosevelt in NBC’s “Annie Live!”. “My father is currently in the hospital, and I need to put all of my energy into his health and well-being,” said McArdle. “I wish everyone involved with the production great success. Break a leg everyone.” The show goes on Thursday, December 2 at 8p.

CBS’ upcoming “Smallwood,” based on life of professional bowler Tom Smallwood, has had a name change. The comedy, produced by CBS Studios, is now titled “How We Roll.”

Newsmax host Steve Cortes is leaving the cable channel. While his exit appears to be related to the company’s vaccine policy – Newsmax instituted rules that were in compliance with the Biden administration’s policy for midsize to large businesses, and Cortes tweeted, “I will not comply w/any organization’s attempt to enforce Biden’s capricious and unscientific Medical Apartheid mandate” – there may be more to the story. One Newsmax staffer told The Daily Beast Cortes poses a “constant risk” to the network due to his inflammatory comments, while another noted that the ratings for his show “suck” and Newsmax is looking to make a change.

For its 2021 holiday campaign, Xfinity is highlighting the importance of resilience, togetherness and tradition in a two-minute short film called “Come Home.” Created by Illumination, the holiday short features the stars of the studio’s upcoming animated film, “Sing 2,” which hits theaters on December 22.

Disney’s ESPN wrapped it fiscal 2021 with 76 million US households, down 10% from 2020. Streaming service ESPN+ counted 17 million subscribers, up 66% year-over-year.
