FanAI SNAPSHOT

This week, FanAI looks at a small portion of the biggest revenue segment of esports, telecom sponsorships. In recent years, most of the largest US telecom corporations have thrown their hat into esports with a variety of sponsor activations. One of the largest was T-Mobile’s sponsorships of The Overwatch League and several high profile teams like OpTic Gaming (Houston Outlaws), Team SoloMid, Cloud9, and SK Gaming (internationally). So how have sponsor activations impacted the social followings of these companies? To answer that, FanAI looked at the Twitter followings of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Among these brands, Verizon leads the way with the greatest number of esports fans among its nearly 1.7M Twitter followers. However, T-Mobile boasts the greatest representation of esports fans as a percentage of its followers at 21.1%. It is likely that the larger concentration of esports fans for T-Mobile is because of the larger scope of their sponsor activities. For brands, this shows that targeted, larger activations can be the difference between them and their competitors when grabbing their share of the esports audience.
