Jonathan Katz has formed Free TV Networks, which will focus on free over-the-air and streaming channels. Out of the gate on January 1 will be digital broadcast channels The365, serving African-American viewers, and Outlaw, featuring Westerns. Katz, who launched Bounce TV, is working with Warner Bros. Discovery, Lionsgate and Gray Television on the project. “Never underestimate the power of ‘free.’ Audiences and advertisers have driven the thriving ad market for digital broadcast networks to well over $1 billion, with FAST channel revenues now more than $5 billion,” said Katz. “The Free TV Networks team has a successful and profitable track record scaling well-defined brands designed to serve the ever-growing number of value-conscious consumers combining free over-the-air and FAST channels with their favorite streaming services.”

“Friends” shot to the top of the charts following Matthew Perry’s death. The series was the No. 1 most popular show on US streamers for the week of October 30-November 5, according to new data. After Perry’s death on October 28, Max, which owns the exclusive rights to the hit series, added a tribute card that appears at the start of each season in his honor.

“Black Friday” football ads are sold out at Amazon. Kicking off the start of holiday-shopping season, Amazon has also sold out of ad inventory for “Thursday Night Football” games for November 16 and November 30. “We are excited by this, by how we can event-ize Black Friday for advertisers, and we have been thinking about it that way,” Danielle Carney, head of NFL ad sales at Amazon, told Variety. “

FOX Television Stations has formed a new political unit. Ben Stecker and Walt Lopko will lead all the station group’s political ad sales efforts, reporting directly to Patrick Paolini, EVP of FTS Ad Sales. In making the announcement, Paolini said, “In an ever-present political cycle, which is kicking into high gear with the 2024 Presidential Election, it is critical to assemble a talented team that best suits the future of the rapidly evolving advertising marketplace.”

North Road now has a “significant” stake in Questlove’s Two One Five Entertainment. The deal includes an equity stake, project financing and support to scale the business across both scripted and unscripted content.

“The Sandbox” has announced a partnership with Banijay Brands to bring “Peaky Blinders” and “Black Mirror” to the virtual realm. The subsidiary of Animoca Brands will create metaverse spinoffs of the series with Banijay Brands. The “Peaky Blinders” experience will feature fetch quests, secret routes, exploration and community fan gatherings. The “Black Mirror” experiences will allow fans to become different characters and become immersed in a universe inspired by the series. Said Lex Scott, commercial director of gaming and gambling at Banijay Brands, “‘Peaky Blinders’ and ‘Black Mirror’ have cultivated extremely passionate, global audiences that want to engage with the brands in fresh and exciting ways. Both series inhabit such visually complex and layered worlds, and we can’t wait for fans to explore these further through The Sandbox.”

84% of advertisers will increase FAST investments in 2024, according to a new report from Xumo and Comcast Advertising. The joint report titled The 2023 State of FAST explores the growing usage of FAST among advertisers and consumers, and the role it is playing in multiscreen TV advertising plans today. “Every month, FAST channels are attracting tens of millions of viewers due to the plethora of high- quality programming including content like local news, niche sports, themed movies, enthusiast TV shows, and more,” said Marcien Jenckes, president of Xumo and managing director at Comcast Advertising. “The results of this research highlight how the advertising industry is responding to FAST, and their increasing interest in its monetization potential.”

Quickplay continues to expand its global presence with the launch of its EMEA office. The company’s new office will address heightened industry demand for cloud-native, open architecture OTT solutions that have been proven to accelerate time to market capabilities, drive cost effectiveness and optimize audience engagement and monetization.

Pocket.watch is partnering with eight new creators to expand the portfolio of content and IP. The new partnerships, resulting in a total of 48 creator partners, representing 830 million YouTube subscribers and 561 billion lifetime views on YouTube, will grow the creators’ brands into global franchises. The creators include Daniel LaBelle, the McClure Twins, Papa Jake and more.

The Israeli-inspired series “RUSH” is in the early development stage at Freeform. Written by Andrew Lenchewski and Kevin O’Hare, and directed by Alexis Ostrander, the high school drama series based on the Israeli show “The Station” centers on four high school students who work with adult firefighters and EMTs in their free time.

“The Circus” is leaving town. Showtime’s political docuseries, featuring regular host correspondents Mark McKinnon, John Heilemann and Jennifer Palmieri, will end its run after eight seasons and 130 episodes. The show’s final episode airs on Sunday at 7p on Paramount+ with Showtime and Showtime linear.

“Chapelwaite,” starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire, was canceled after one season. The MGM+ series’ co-creator and executive producer Jason Filardi wrote on Twitter, “I’m afraid Captain Boone’s story ends on that beach of weathered, Maine sand. There will be no Season 2. Thank you to all the Chapelwaite fans!”

MGM+ greenlit “The Wonderland Murders & The Secret History of Hollywood.” Based on the Audible exclusive podcast by Michael Connelly and directed by Alison Ellwood, the four-part docuseries delves into the 1980s Los Angeles mass murder.

Justin Levy, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger have launched Station26. The former Automatik executives currently have a first-look deal at A+E Studios and Range Studios, and have a development slate and a number of projects already set up at streamers (including Netflix’s “Black Rabbit,” starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman).


“Reacher” premieres with three episodes on December 15. Subsequent episodes will roll out weekly on Amazon Prime Video through January 19, 2024.

Maria Menounos, Olivia Culpo and Jeannie Mai host Miss Universe 2023. The trio replace former host Steve Harvey. The 72nd annual competition airs on Roku and Telemundo on November 18. TV personalities Jacqueline Bracamontes and Danilo Carrera will host the Spanish-language telecast.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced dates for Emmy festivities. The four-day celebration will honor individuals in the Daytime and Children’s & Family television communities, including: The Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards Luncheon on December 16, The 2nd Annual Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmy Awards Dinner that night, and more. All Emmy celebrations will be held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.

Spectrum will salute Veterans Day with an On Demand collection of war-themed movies for rent. Featuring Bradley Cooper in the Iraq War biographical drama “American Sniper,” David Oyelowo as a pilot in “Red Tails,” Harry Styles in “Dunkirk” and Peter Jackson’s documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old,” the movies will be available in the On Demand portal under the category For the Troops through November 13.

The Africa Channel has teamed up with the Miss World South Africa Pageant to air a special on Sunday, November 12, at 9p. The Final Pageant will air the following Sunday, November 19, at 9p. Additionally, several “meet the finalist” videos will be available to view on linear and social channels.

Ovation TV celebrates the holidays with on-air movie blocks and a curated on-demand lineup, including Nutcracker Ballet productions and a New Year’s Eve marathon of the first two seasons of “Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators.” On-air and on-demand programming starts on December 1.

HBO original documentary short “How Do We Get Here” debuts on November 14. Directed by Geeta Gandbhir and Samantha Knowles and produced by the New York Times and Multitude Films, the doc follows community activist Elisabeth Epps as she works to abolish the cash bail system in Colorado. Inspired by a NYT article and filmed over the course of two years, the documentary tracks Epps’ efforts as the founder and executive director of the Colorado Freedom Fund, a community bail fund working against the criminalization of poverty.


Global streamers released 228 original European fiction titles last year, according to a report from the European Audiovisual Observatory. The report found that Netflix commissioned two-thirds of the fiction titles, amounting to 50%, followed by Amazon with 17%. The study also found that only 9% of overall fiction titles in Europe were commissioned by global streamers, while public service broadcasters lead fiction commissioning with 56%.

The Wiggles have inked a deal with Future Today’s HappyKids. Adding more than 80 hours of classic “Wiggles” content to the platform, Future Today will create and distribute a “Wiggles”-branded app featuring both the classic content and two seasons of new content from their latest series, “Ready, Steady, Wiggle.”


Telemundo has unveiled its complete broadcast schedule ahead of The FIFA U-17 World Cup Indonesia 2023. All 52 matches will air live and exclusively in Spanish with 13 on Telemundo and 19 on Universo, and every match will stream live on the Telemundo App starting November 10 through December 2. Re-airs of the Semifinal and Final matches are currently scheduled to air on Universo.

Comscore announced a new partnership with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. The multi-year agreement provides the team with access to Comscore’s local television measurement solution. Comscore Local TV will now be the exclusive measurement solution to support programming insights and revenue opportunities in the nine local markets, including Minneapolis-St. Paul and Milwaukee, that air the Wild’s games and original programming.

Nick Kyrgios has joined the Tennis Channel as an analyst. The 2022 Australian Open doubles champion and Wimbledon singles finalist will help lead coverage of the ATP Finales from November 12-19. It will be Kyrgios’ first time working with the network. The Tennis Channel’s telecast begins on Sunday, November 12, at 6a.

FloSports now has the exclusive media rights to cover the expanded High Limit Racing series, set to launch in 2024. The deal is the latest milestone in FloSports’ efforts to double down on a sustainable sports streaming model.


The UK’s Media Bill brings US streamers under Ofcom’s regulatory framework. Outlined in a speech by King Charles III, US streamers will be fined up to £250,000 ($308,000) or restricted in the UK entirely if they break regulations around harmful material that have applied to public broadcasters. The bill better protects children “by applying similar standards for TV to the streaming giants,” said the government’s notes on the King’s Speech. “The Bill will ensure standards are upheld on video-on-demand services through a proportionate new Video-on-demand Code, to be drafted and enforced by Ofcom.”

FirstLookTV has signed an Australian distribution deal with LGI Media. The new partnership will see true crime indie content expand across the global market. Alongside the deal, the UK Midlands-based Factual specialist has also announced the development of its investment in History and Natural History, both of which are genres already distributed by LGI Media.

“Bebefinn” is now available in French. LA-based production company Voffla announced it is producing the French songs for the animated sing-along series under the musical direction of five-time Telly Award winner Claire Dodin. With over 13 million subscribers on YouTube, “Bebefinn” comes from The Pinkfong Company, creators of “Baby Shark Dance,” which holds the top spot as the most-viewed YouTube video of all time (currently at 13 billion views).

Numbers continue to surge with “Love & Hip Hop: Miami.” The series’ season five finale delivered its highest-rated episode of the season and double-digit viewership, up +35% with delayed viewing last Monday night.


CBS News and Stations has announced John Kelly as the head of a newly structured data journalism team. The journalist will take over as VP of data journalism for the company, assuming the new role as of Monday, November 13. “This is an incredible opportunity to collaborate with many of the finest journalists and storytellers in the industry,” said Kelly. “We will use data to power investigations that reveal challenges in our communities and help find solutions that improve people’s lives. I look forward to contributing to the next chapter of news excellence at CBS.”

NBCUniversal News Group has a new head of talent strategy. Jessica Kurdali, formerly the VP of talent development at the company, began her decades-long career at NBC News as an intern.

Sony Pictures Television Studios’ Lauren Stein is the new head of creative. In the newly created role, Stein will oversee drama and comedy development, TriStar Television, global co-productions and current programming on first-year series.

Fubo announced the appointment of Dina Roman. Roman will serve as the company’s first SVP and global head of advertising sales.

Rare TV has appointed Fernano De Jesus as creative director. De Jesus previously served as creative director, UK and US, for Studio Ramsay Global.

The Paley Center for Media has inducted new members to its Board of Trustees and Los Angeles Board of Governors. Kevin Mayer, Neal Mohan, Karthik Rao, Dana Strong and David Wehner join the Board of Trustees, as Ingrid Lewis-Martin joins as an ex-officio Board of Trustees member and Frances Berwick joins the Los Angeles Board of Governors. “The Paley Center is privileged to welcome each of these innovative, enterprising, and distinguished leaders to our esteemed Board of Trustees and Los Angeles Board of Governors,” said Maureen J.
