IN THE NEWS

Massive job cuts at Twitter, anticipated since Elon Musk took control of the company on October 27, commenced on Friday. And it was messy, with numerous employees locked out of their company emails ahead of layoff notifications, and workers locked out of the company’s offices, “to help ensure the safety of each employee as well as Twitter systems and customer data,” said a notice. About half of the company’s 7500 employees lost their jobs.

HBO has canceled “Westworld,” created by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, after four seasons. “Lisa and [Jonathan] have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step,” read a statement from HBO. “We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television.” The dystopian drama was a critical success, but cost about $10 million per episode to produce and has experienced a steady decline in viewership.

Also axed is MSNBC weekend show “Cross Connection,” launched in 2020. “It is my hope that the last two years at MSNBC have been disruptive and transformative, changing how politics are discussed and making policy more digestible,” said host Tiffany Cross. “It was the opportunity of a lifetime to create a show the culture would be proud to keep trending every weekend.” The network will fill the timeslot with rotating hosts for the time being.

And “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” is the latest show to hit the chopping block at The CW, according to a tweet from series star Colin Mochrie. “In January, we shoot our final season,” he posted. The improvisational comedy show, currently in its 11th season, joins “Nancy Drew,” “Riverdale,” “DC’s Stargirl” and “The Flash” at cancellation station.

AMC Networks saw the number of streaming subscribers surge 44% in 3Q22, and reported adjusted earnings per share of $2.09, ahead of the $1.77 forecast. Revenue declined as advertising dipped 10% due to lower rates and fewer original hours during the quarter. “Our strong content engagement is driving positive momentum throughout 2022,” said CEO Christina Spade. “Our focus to transform to a consumer-focused multi-platform premium content company is taking hold with strong digital distribution growth.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

NBC gave a put pilot commitment to “Grosse Point Garden Society,” from Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs (“Good Girls”). The drama follows four members of a garden club who get caught up in a murder.

UK-based 101 Films International reported international sales of the feature film “Fear the Invisible Man,” a remake of the HG Wells classic novel The Invisible Man. The period action thriller has been acquired by Screen Media, a Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment company for North America, Factoris for France, 101 Films in the UK, Dolphin in Germany and Superfine in India.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Showtime has picked up the six-part limited series “George & Tammy,” starring Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”) and Michael Shannon (“Nocturnal Animals”) and set a debut date of December 4 at 9p.

Hulu’s “Back in the Groove” kicks off with a four-night event starting Monday, December 5. The reality series places three single women in their 40s in a resort where the goal is to rediscover their youth – and possibly find love with men half their age.

COMING UP

Dave Chappelle will host NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on November 12, his third post-election appearance in the role. Rap duo Black Star will serve as musical guests.

Comedy Central has a new one-hour special from Jeff Dunham premiering Friday, November 25 at 8p. “Jeff Dunham: Me the People” is the comedian’s 11th standup special.

TECH TALK

Fox Corp. has selected FreeWheel as a partner to enable its OneFox video inventory across the company’s portfolio. “We teamed up with this goal in mind: to create a better overall ad – and user – experience for the TV advertising industry,” FreeWheel GM Mark McKee tells Cynopsis. “As a result, you’ll see us working with Fox to bring forth new solutions and capabilities tackling many of today’s pressing industry needs, including fragmentation, reducing waste, optimizing efficiency and reaching the right target audiences.”

STREAMING

Warner Bros. Discovery’s merger of HBO Max and discovery+, initially planned for next summer, has been moved up to spring. “We can’t wait to make the service available to consumers around the globe and get the business running on all cylinders,” said WBD CEO David Zaslav during the company’s third quarter earnings call. “While our team is hard at work preparing for the launch of our combined offering, we’re also actively experimenting and testing our hypotheses about the future product in large part to address some of the deficiencies of the existing platform.”

Redbox Free Live TV service has surpassed 150 FAST channels, with the additions of Fear Factor, Deal or No Deal, The Biggest Loser, and Wipeout Xtra from producer-distributor Banijay. That’s in addition to Cowboy Way, True Crime Now, Paranormal Files, and Snowy River. “We have been aggressively adding channels to our Redbox Free Live TV service and expect to accelerate that further in the coming months,” said Adam Mosam, Chief Digital Officer of Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. “The addition of these addictive evergreen channels combined with hundreds of hours of newly added genre content adds tremendous value to our growing FAST offering.”

FuboTV announced third quarter results that included North America revenue and subscriber growth coming in ahead of forecast. FuboTV closed the quarter with $219.2 million in revenue for NA, an increase of 40% year-over-year, while ad revenue was $22.5 million, up 21% year-over year. NA paid subscribers reached a record high of 1,231,000, an increase of 31% year-over-year. “As consumers continue to become disillusioned with the many expensive and content-limited streaming services in the market, and those streaming services turn to other monetization levers like advertising, we are excited about our unique positioning in the marketplace,” said Edgar Bronfman Jr., Executive Chairman, FuboTV.

In the spirit of Friendsgiving, Journy is highlighting best buddy traveling series in November, including the Journy premiere of “Departures” alongside “Rock the Park,” “Travel Man,” and “Glamping Adventures.”

SPORTS

Next year’s F1 race in Las Vegas has been officially announced as the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix 2023. It will be the first ever Saturday F1 race, taking place at night on November 18.

The BBC announced extensive digital, TV and audio coverage of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, including live text commentaries, fixtures, results, previews, post-match reports and analysis of all 64 matches plus stadium guides and video features, available on a special World Cup landing page.
