10.30.15 Good morning. It’s Friday October 30, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The NBA is busting through the jersey barrier, and is planning to add a sponsor’s logo to its jerseys. The league will allow Kia to place its logo on a 3.25-inch-by-1.6-inch patch that will be displayed on the upper left chest of player jerseys for both the 2016 and 2017 All-Star games, marking the first time that one of the “Big 4” American professional sports will feature a non-apparel logo on jerseys during a game. The patch comes as part of a deal via Turner Sports, and will also run on All-Star jerseys that will be made available for retail sale. The news was first reported by the WSJ.
Another Royals win in Game 2 of the 2015 World Series handed FOX with an 8.2/14 household rating/share, notching 13.7 million viewers to mark a 4% rise in rating and 6% in average audience versus Game 2 a year ago. That makes the game the most-watched World Series Game 2 since 2011. Meanwhile, the Spanish-language telecast on FOX Deportes posted 183,000 viewers. So far, the World Series is averaging an 8.7/16 and 14.5 million viewers for the network, up 14% in rating and 16% in audience.
ESPN unveiled plans for the 2015 TCS New York City Marathon, set to run live in New York on ABC7 on ESPN2 for the rest of the country on Sunday at 9a. SportsCenter anchors John Anderson and Hannah Storm co-host race day coverage, with Anderson providing commentary from the booth and Storm at the start and finish lines. They will be joined by ABC7 sports anchors Rob Powers and Laura Behnke. Overall, 38 cameras will offer coverage of the race, which will see Spike Lee directing and appearing in show open.
NBC Sports tackles Saturday with the Rugby World Cup Final, which runs for the first time on US network television, as New Zealand/Australia square off at noon on the network. In addition, Universal Sports Network will air live coverage of the bronze final featuring South Africa/Argentina on Friday at 3:30p, as well as an encore presentation of the Final on Saturday at 10:30p. Bill Seward offers play-by-play for Rugby World Cup 2015 coverage on NBC and Universal Sports Network and will be joined by Brian Hightower.
CBS Sports reports that, through seven weeks of the 2015 NFL regular-season, The NFL on CBS is averaging 19.0 million viewers to mark a 9% spike over last year’s 17.5 million viewers. That number also represents the highest number of average viewers for the first seven weeks of the season for the AFC television package in 29 years, while boasting a household rating/share of 11.2/24, up 8%.
Meanwhile, Golf Channel is touting its most-watched October ever, anchored by the network’s 2nd-most-watched Presidents Cup Week on record. The network reeled in 11.4 million unique viewers (to mark a 19% YOY uptick), while a record 88,000 viewers per minute tuned into Golf Channel in October. Additionally, Golf Channel retained its status in October as the No. 1 most-affluent network for the month, as well as year-to-date in all of television with the highest median household income for total day viewership.
The Breeders Cup hits NBC on Saturday night at 8p, with coverage launching Friday at 5p on NBCSN. Tom Hammond hosts and will be joined by Jerry Bailey, Randy Moss and Eddie Olczyk. Meanwhile, here are some picks for the $6M Breeders’ Cup Classic from Eddie Olczyk and Laffit Pincay.

Turner Sports locked in a new halftime show sponsor, inking a multi-year deal with American Express. The American Express Halftime Report will be featured in every NBA game on TNT and NBA TV during the regular season, post season and All-Star Game. “NBA fans know and love the TNT halftime show for delivering in-depth analysis and sharp, witty commentary week in and week out for the entire season,” said Jill Hamilton, Vice President, U.S. Media for American Express. “The American Express Halftime Report is a valuable platform that complements the brand’s partnership with the league, its teams and, most importantly, the fans.”
NBC Sports Group is launching CPTR’D (Captured), a new sports short-form feature contest that is open to filmmakers “who aspire to follow NBC Sports’ Emmy Award-winning storytelling heritage.” Select short-form feature submissions will be shown across NBC Sports Group’s digital platforms, with the winning project telecast on NBCSN for a cool $10,000. Entries can be submitting starting Nov. 9 with all submissions running 10 minutes or less on any sports-related topic with a Jan. 12 deadline. “Storytelling is part of the DNA of NBC Sports Group. CPTR’D allows NBC Sports to reward and encourage filmmakers of all levels, and give them an opportunity to share their stories with a national audience,” said Ron Wechsler, Senior Vice President, Original Productions, NBC Sports Group. “We are excited to launch CPTR’D, and offer this new and unique content to our viewers.”
Nike is launching a new ad spot that will begin the company’s #GetOutHere campaign celebrating Nike’s innovative cold weather apparel. The spot, dubbed Snow Day, features 21 professional athletes with pros such as Patriot’s Rob Gronkowski, the Giant’s Odell Beckham Jr., and the U.S. Women’s Soccer World Cup Champions Sydney Leroux and Carli Lloyd competing against one another in an epic football showdown among the newly fallen snow out in the cold. Nike.com will offer consumers the ability to filter products by weather condition Freezing, Cold, Cool, and Dark and then receive product recommendations for the optimal clothing to wear in those performance conditions. In addition, the company is partnering with Weather.com to deliver personalized information to athletes on how to best dress for cold weather exercise via their mobile devices.
MLB and Stand Up To Cancer unveiled a new PSA campaign, titled Potential, to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. The PSAs feature childhood images of MLB stars Andrew McCutchen, Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Felix Hernandez, David Price and Anthony Rizzo and highlights children who have survived, or are currently in the fight against, cancer. The new PSAs debut tonight during Game Three of the 2015 World Series.
With the World Series heading to NYC, tonight the Citi building at One Court Square in Long Island City will be lit up in Mets colors orange and blue and will stay lit throughout the series. To coincide with the lighting, Citi will be setting up Citi Bikes inside a pop-up Citi Field in Times Square tomorrow before Game 3 that will allow fans to ride on the stationary bikes and generate power to offset the energy needed to light up the top four floors of the building.
Meanwhile, as the Official Airline of the New York Mets, Delta Air Lines will be taking 80 fans to the game with the chance to ride on Delta’s Amazin’ Mets Express water taxi for Games 3 and Game 4. The Mets-branded water taxi will depart from Manhattan’s East Side and cruise along the East River before arriving at Citi Field. Mets legend Mike Piazza and comedian Jim Breuer will serve as the honorary captains of the ship today and entertain guests while on-board. Fans looking to hitch a ride can follow @Mets and @Delta on Twitter for clues on how to win tickets on the shuttle.

MLB on FOX is teaming up with Facebook during the World Series in order to offer ‘live’ video chats during the games. Game 2 saw Hall of Famer Frank Thomas appear in a live video chat on MLB on FOX’s Facebook Page to answer questions from sports fans with another round set to take place during Game 3 on Friday night at Citi Field with Raul Ibanez. “A live report on Facebook is an innovative way for MLB on FOXto reach passionate baseball fans on the first and second screens,” said Rob Shaw, Sports Media Partnerships. “Facebook is the largest real-time social media audience for live sports events,and it’s exciting to see FOX Sports program content for this audience during the World Series."
