IN THE NEWS

Looks like new FOX comedies The Grinder and Grandfathered are sticking around – the network is picking up six additional scripts for each show. Most recent A18-49 ratings were a soft .9 and 1.0, respectively, but the series have grabbed positive reviews and upscale audiences.

Remember when Evan Shapiro left his position as president of Pivot last year and jumped to NBCUniversal to work as EVP on the digital side? Yesterday in NYC’s SoHo, Shapiro finally revealed what he’s been doing for the last ten months  and it’s big. NBCUniveral Digital Enterprises, a startup within NBCUni/Comcast,is launching Seeso, a streaming comedy service with exclusive, original series and stand-up as well as curated content including NBC’s late night shows, set to debut in early 2016 for $3.99/month.“Big streaming services have created a paradox of choice – they’re great if you know exactly what to watch, but if you aren’t in the middle of a binge, the search can be near endless,” said Shapiro.“By focusing on a specific, yet large niche, and providing a curated experience, we can help viewers find good stuff they might not or cannot find. Seeso is your neighborhood comedy eatery, with daily specials from a chef you trust.” Shapiro called theservice "a complement, not a replacement" for the likes of wider-reaching streamers, and said the launch will not affect its pre-existing deals with Hulu and YouTube.

Donald Trump is heading to NBC‘s Today for a Town Hall Discussion, broadcast live from New Hampshire on Monday, October 26. Co-host Matt Lauer will moderate. As part of the deal, Lauer will also have a live one-on-one interview with Trump before the town hall.

But will Trump make it to the GOP debate on CNBC two days later? The Republican front-runner is among the candidates disgruntled by the lack of a set length of time, among other things. A letter signed Trump and Ben Carson said warned, "Neither Mr. Trump or Dr. Carson will participate in your debate if it is longer than 120 minutes including commercials and does not include opening and closing statements."

TheBlaze Inc., Glenn Beck’s 24-hour news, opinion and entertainment network, has hired conservative political commentator and TV personality Tomi Lahren as a host and contributor. “Tomi’s thoughtful and insightful commentary has positioned her as the fresh voice of an often overlooked group – conservative millennials,” said Kraig Kitchin, CEO of TheBlaze. “She has a proven ability to connect with younger audiences.” Final Thoughts with Tomi Lahren will debut this week on TheBlaze TV, appearing weeknights during primetime programming. In addition, her self-titled one-hour television program will launch in November.

The Hollywood activist lineup has been announced for the Environmental Media Awards on October 24. Lance Bass will host the ceremony, Blythe Danner will present to daughter Gwyneth Paltrow (EMA Green Parent Award Honoree), and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley will present to George Miller (Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree). Fusion’s coverage of the event will be featured across all its platforms.

"This is such an important series for us,” Stephanie Noonan Drachkovitch, co-founder and president of the company, tells Cynopsis. “Working with another famous family, much like we did for Wahlburgers, is a huge honor for us as producers. They’ve entrusted us to introduce them into the world of unscripted television and to tell their story on a much deeper and personal level than ever before.”

ITV Studios America has optioned the rights to Brian Panowich’s novel Bull Mountain to adapt into a scripted television series. Ed Bernero (Criminal Minds) will pen the pilot script and showrun the project.

Warner Bros. Television Group has signed an exclusive multi-year development and production pod deal with Tavis Smiley. Under the terms of the pact, WBTVG and Smiley will develop new scripted television series projects for the broadcast networks and cable. The first projects will be TV series adaptations of Smiley’s books: My Journey with Maya, a memoir of the author’s nearly 30-year friendship with Maya Angelou, and the upcoming Before You Judge Me: The Triumph and Tragedy of Michael Jackson’s Last Days, a vibrant account of the final 16 weeks in the life of the legendary pop superstar.

ABC is developing a half-hour comedy sequel to the 1997 Julia Roberts film, My Best Friend’s Wedding, says The Hollywood Reporter. Ron Bass, who wrote the feature, will pen the script with Jessica Amento.

Rapper/entrepreneur Sean Combs is teaming with ABC to develop a series based on the real-life events of his former assistant SarahSnedeker, now an executive at his Revolt Films. The comedy, which has received a script commitment with a penalty attached, centers on a small-town girl who lands a dream job and is thrown into a world of extravagance, debauchery and adventure.

ADVERTISING

Although ratings for the broadcast of the 2015 Oscars fell almost 15 percent, Variety reports ABC is looking for record prices for 2016 spots, asking potential buyers for as much as $2.2 million for a 30-second commercial. Advertisers who bought in early were asked to pay between $1.8 million and $2 million.

NinthDecimal and TiVo Research have partnered to measure the impact of TV Ad Spend on consumer real-world behavior. “This partnership combines TiVo Research’s precise TV viewership data with NinthDecimal’s mobile audience and location data to create new insight into how TV advertising correlates to foot traffic in a physical location,” Frank Foster, SVP and GM of TiVo Research, tells Cynopsis. “This closed-loop understanding of consumer behavior has great potential to move the advertising business forward, especially as the media landscape changes. This type of data will allow us to measure effectiveness and ROI like never before.”

CASTING
