Good morning. It’s Friday October 16, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FS1 saw a viewership surge with Game 5 of the Astros/Royals American League Division Series reeling in 5,944,000 viewers on the network, making it the most-watched telecast in network history by 17%. The contest also handed FOX Deportes with 146,000 viewers, making it the network’s most-watched ALDS game this year. Kansas City led all local markets for FS1, posting a 36.3 rating, followed by Houston (15.7), Austin (5.4), Hartford (5.2) and St. Louis (5.1). Earlier in the day, the Rangers/Blue Jays elimination game generated 3,199,000 viewers in the afternoon, second best of all time for the channel. Overall, the 2015 ALDS on FS1 averaged 2,795,000 viewers, off pace by 10% from the NLDS on FS1 last year although the two additional games this year saw total viewing of the LDS round grow 20%.
FOX Sports now showcases the Royals/Blue Jays for the ALCS starting today at 7p with game time at 8p. Joe Buck, Harold Reynolds and Tom Verducci call the action for the ALCS action from the booth with reports from Ken Rosenthal and Erin Andrews. All ALCS games on FOX & FS1 are also televised in Spanish exclusively on FOX Deportes.
CBS Sports is lining up its biggest slate of college basketball games ever, teaming with CBS Sports Network to offer fans 258 total games this season with matchups from 19 different conferences. The schedule begins on the broadcast channel on Dec. 5 at 12:30p with Temple/Wisconsin and 40 games on deck for the season. CBS Sports Network carries 218 games with coverage tipping off Nov. 13 with the “Veterans Classic at the Naval Academy” featuring Temple/North Carolina at 7p and Florida/Navy at 9:30p. CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network also offer up 28 women’s basketball games, including two appearances by Connecticut on CBS Sports Network, as well as Ohio State at Maryland on CBS.
Round two of Road to the NHL Winter Classic on EPIX will return on Dec. 16 at 10p. The weekly series will serve up four one-hour episodes and focus on the rivalry between the Bruins and the Canadiens as they prepare for the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day 2016. In addition, U.S. hockey fans will be able to stream each episode live as it premieres via EPIX.com and NHL.com. Ross Greenburg returns to produce, with eps narrated by Bill Camp. “EPIX was committed to revitalizing the ‘Road to The NHL Winter Classic’ series and restoring its original mission — which is to offer viewers unfiltered, intimate access inside the world of the NHL,” said Mark S. Greenberg, EPIX President and CEO. “The overwhelmingly positive response we received from our audience and the hockey fans who watched the first season is proof that we delivered. We are excited to work with Ross Greenburg on another season that showcases the high quality premium entertainment our subscribers have come to expect from EPIX.”

In ratings news, the NFL on CBS reports that it is averaging 18.2 million viewers this season. That marks the highest number of average viewers for the first five weeks of the season for the AFC television package in 29 years.
Elsewhere, ESPN/ABC saw week 6 of college football hand the channels with five of the six most-watched games, including top-ranked Oklahoma/Texas on ABC. The matchup drew 4,992,000 viewers to score as the most-watched Sooners-Longhorn matchup since 2011 and up 18% over the 2014 matchup. On WatchESPN, Cal/Utah ranked as the most-streamed game in week 6 with an additional 87,000 average minute impressions to the TV audience and a total of 343,000 unique viewers accounting for 19,654,000 minutes viewed.

The Pac-12 is looking to celebrate 100 years as a conference with Pac-12 Networks looking to announce a 20-member All-Century Men’s Basketball Team has assembled a panel of experts to select a 20-member All-Century Men’s Basketball Team. The channel assembled a roster of experts to determine the elite, which will be unveiled on a 30-minute Pac-12 Networks special program dubbed Pac-12 All-Century: Men’s Basketball Team on March 8, the day before the 2016 Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament begins. In addition to football and men’s basketball, All-Century teams for numerous other Olympic sports will be unveiled throughout the year.

ESPN is taking on sponsors with a message about ad blockers, releasing a statement about viewable and effective impressions, writing that “The advertising industry is challenged with ad blockers, bots and viewability concerns” along with clutter, a lack of transparency and fraudulent practices. The company is touting that the company scores better impressions, pointing to studies that include the DCN Bot Benchmark Report and the Advertiser Perceptions Advertiser Experience Index to showcase its rankings in connecting with consumers.
G-III Apparel Group is turning to late-night for its newest product launch, dubbed Hands High, a new licensed sports apparel line inspired by Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon. The apparel will feature professional team logos from the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL located under the arms. Fallon worked with the G-III design and sales team on all aspects of the project. "I’m so excited to team with G-III who took my vision and made it a reality,” said Fallon. “Hands High will fire up crowds to cheer with their hands in the air and bring the thrill of the game to a whole new level of fun."
Meanwhile, in the shoe wars, Duke University Athletics added a 12-year deal with Nike that will see the brand supply all 27 of the Blue Devils’ athletics teams with uniforms, footwear, apparel and equipment innovation through 2027.
ESPN reports that the Vikings’ Adrian Peterson has signed with Adidas. The running back had been with Nike until his indictment on child injury charges last September.
espnW partnered with EY on a new report analyzing how sport readies women for leadership positions while boosting career opportunities and earning power. The study found that girls who play sports have greater social and economic mobility, are less likely to use drugs, and perform better in school. In addition, 74% of respondents said that a background in sports can help accelerate a woman’s career, with 61% believing that contributed to their own career success with annual wages of former athletes about 7% higher than those of non-athletes. Meanwhile, 94% of women in the C-suite played sports, 52% at a university level. “The evidence is clear: Sports matter,” said Laura Gentile, Vice President and Founder of espnW and a US Title IX scholarship recipient. “Participating in sports has a deep and definitive impact on the course of a woman’s life, and we can see from the research that sports help to provide women with the tools we need to succeed and lead.”
Following yesterday’s Wall Street Journal report that FBI agents and the Department of Justice have joined investigations in daily fantasy sports, fallout continued with ESPN reporting that the NFL has been contacting members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee in a move to block a congressional hearing on the league’s relationship with fantasy sports. In addition, operator DraftKings released a statement about the investigation, writing, "It is entirely predictable that the government would follow up on the misleading reports about our industry," according to the site. "We have no knowledge of the specifics of any federal investigation but strongly disagree with any notion that our company has engaged in any illegal activities
Russia is going deep in the eSports space with Bloomberg reporting that billionaire Alisher Usmanov’s USM Holdings agreed to invest around $100 million in the country’s largest online sports company, Virtus.pro. The company now organizes tournaments for games such as Counter Strike, Dota 2 and League of Legends, and streams them online, boasting more than 7.6 million subscribers with over 1 billion views last year.
YouTube Gaming continues to bolster its steaming offerings, and will now support streaming live video and gameplay from Android phones, allowing players use their front-facing cameras to appear and talk over mobile games. The platform is also adding perks for fans to either donate to streamers or pay a monthly subscription.
