Only eight months after assuming the job, Phil Craig is exiting his post as VP/chief creative officer of Discovery Networks International. News broke at Mipcom, and DNI followed shortly with a statement reading, in part: “Phil Craig has decided to step down from his role as EVP & Chief Creative Officer with Discovery Networks International, and go back to his roots as a leading independent producer.”
Relativity Studios president Tucker Tooley will step down following a 30-day transition period. The announcement came soon after the judge in a US Bankruptcy Court rescheduled a hearing yesterday that was to determine the future of Relativity. The new hearing is expected to begin today. Ramon Wilson, GM at the Relativity, will serve as interim president.
Television distribution is in the mix for the new partnership between Endemol Shine Group and AwesomenessTV that aims to extend the international reach of the AwesomenessTV brand. Under the multiyear deal, premium channel network Endemol Beyond will launch local language, owned-and-operated AwesomenessTV channels in markets outside the US including the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Brazil, and grow the AwesomenessTV talent roster. New original content created under the agreement will include long-form AwesomenessTV series and formats for both digital video and television distribution. Sketch comedy series AwesomenessTV currently airs on Nickelodeon.
UP has launched a multi-platform campaign to raise awareness about bullying prevention. “UPLIFT SOMEONE Stand UP Against Bullying,” part of the family friendly net’s UPLIFT SOMEONE pro-social initiative, supports October as National Bullying Prevention Month and is the first time UP has enlisted talent from its original series and movies in a PSA effort. Said Wendy McCoy, SVP, marketing, “We are committed to doing all that we can to help families conquer difficult situations – bullying is high on the list.”
Lifetime’s Broad Focus initiative to develop female writers, producers and directors, for its channels is expanding globally, with a kickoff this week at Mipcom. Broad Focus first launched in the U.S. in April. As part of the global initiative, Lifetime international channels will launch their own Broad Focus activities including the production of short form on-air and digital content featuring diverse female content makers, local activations at festivals and events, and on-air programming initiatives to feature content made by women.
Hallmark Channel is introducing a new holiday custom this year with the debut of its own signature float in the 89th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The net’s “Heartwarming Holiday Countdown” float will spotlight a live performance and comes as it prepares to unveil its inaugural Thanksgiving Weekend Event featuring an unprecedented five consecutive nights of new original movie premieres from November 25-29.
Samuel Baum has a new two-year exclusive cable writing and producing deal with HBO. HBO Films recently ordered Bernie Madoff tome The Wizard Of Lies, on which Baum was a writer. Baum also recently co-wrote and exec-produced the pilot Cocked for Amazon.

Kowabunga! Fox picked up The 808, an hourlong surfer soap opera from Sony Pictures TV and Vendetta, Sheldon Turner & Jennifer Klein’s studio-based operation. Penned by Oscar nominee Turner, the show is named for the Hawaii area code.
Nicholas Sparks is on a television roll. The best-selling author sold his first half-hour comedy project, The Next Chapter, a semi-autobiographical story of a newly single top-selling romance novelist learning to date again while keeping up his public persona as a love expert. (Sparks and his wife separated in January.) The show is written by Austin Winsberg (Gossip Girl) and is housed at Warner Bros TV and Sparks’ studio-based Nicholas Sparks Productions. Sparks also has an adaptation of his popular book The Notebook in the works at the CW.
Corus Entertainment and Bento Box Entertainment formed new animation production company Bento Box Canada, based in Toronto. The joint venture follows the company’s multiyear deal to develop and produce original primetime animated series for Corus networks targeting the 18-34 demographic, to be distributed internationally by Bento Box. Bento Box Canada will operate from the technical facility that houses Corus and Nelvana, and will utilize creative, technical, and back office services from both companies. Production will begin this fall on the first Bento Box Canada series, irreverent animated comedy The Pandas, from creators Mikael Wulff and Anders Morgenthaler.
Former NBCU Cable exec Lauren Zalaznick is exec-producing eight-part docu series A Woman’s Place: The Frontlines Of Feminism, which highlights activists and others leading female empowerment efforts around the world in locales including Brazil, Egypt, the Philippines, Senegal, Turkey, Sweden and the US. The original series is from Refinery29, where Zalaznick serves as a strategic adviser, and We Are the XX co-founders Kassidy Brown and Allison Rapson.
SundanceTV is co-producing with Zodiak Rights on RTE drama Rebellion, a five-part serial charting the birth of modern Ireland during one of the most disruptive periods in history beginning with the outbreak of World War I. The drama is produced by Touchpaper Television and Zodiak Media Ireland for RTE, in co-production with SundanceTV, and is written by Colin Teevan, directed by Aku Louhimies, and produced by Catherine Magee. Rebellion will air on SundanceTV and RTE One in early 2016.
Reelz commissioned Sinatra & The Jack Pack from TCB Media Rights. The one-hour documentary chronicles the relationship between Ol’ Blue Eyes and President John F. Kennedy. Produced by Irish indie Circle Films, the deal follows Reelz’s recent commissions for AMS Pictures’ Murder Made Me Famous, which examines the psychology of killers who have become household names, and Copycat Killers, which takes a cinematic look at the Hollywood films that may have inspired hideous real-life crimes.
Esquire’s Car of The Year premieres on Esquire Network Saturday, October 24 at 9p. Each 30-minute episode will feature comedian and car consigliore Spike Feresten, Esquire mag’s automotive journalist Sam Smith, Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire and NASCAR racing legend Brian Vickers focusing on a category of car that will be debated and driven through the streets of, where else, Motor City.
Cry Havoc Productions series Supercar Superbuild, which first aired on Discovery Networks International, is headed to the Smithsonian Channel. The series looks at the pressure, intrigue and engineering behind the world’s ultimate automotive fantasies.
Season three of The Big Interview returns to AXS TV on October 20 at 8p. Hosted by Dan Rather, the series features exclusive, in-depth discussions with big names in music, film, and television, beginning with this season’s openers, rock’n’rollers Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart. Also on the roster this season is Patti LaBelle.
The CW is feeling the love for new show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and sophomore series iZombie. The network gave both shows orders for five additional scripts one day ahead of iZombie’s season two premiere (tonight) and a week ahead of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s series October 12 premiere.
The second season of late-night talk show StarTalk kicks off on National Geo on October 25 at 11p, with an interview with former President Bill Clinton. Other guests this season include Larry Wilmore, Seth MacFarlane, David Byrne and Susan Sarandon.
National Geo and Fox will air this year’s Breakthrough Prize ceremony honoring today’s most prominent scientists and mathematicians. The event, hosted by Seth MacFarlane, will be broadcast live on Nat Geo Sunday, Nov. 8, at 10p with a one-hour version of the ceremony scheduled for Fox on Sunday, Nov. 29, at 7p.
FXM, formerly Fox Movie Channel, will air the entire first season of FX’s limited series Fargo on October 11, the day before the premiere of the second season. The Fargo marathon will air all 10 episodes in sequence beginning at 2p. Season two premieres on FX on October 12 at 10p.
Emmy-winning comedian Wanda Sykes (Alpha House) will guest in at least three episodes during the fifth season of Showtime comedy House of Lies. Her character, Wanda, will be a love interest for Jeremiah. Also set to guest during the season are Ken Marino (Children’s Hospital) and Nicky Whelan (Franklin & Bash).
Kevin Rankin (Gracepoint) has joined the cast of Fox drama Lucifer. Based on the DC Entertainment property Vertigo, the series is from Warner Bros TV and Jerry Bruckheimer TV..
Jordana Spiro (The Good Wife) will be the lead in The Wilding, USA Network’s two-hour backdoor pilot from Universal Cable Productions. The supernatural drama is exec-produced by Tim Kring and Silka Luisa, the show’s writer/creator.
Character actor Jeff Doucette is expanding his recurring role as science teacher Mr. Norton on Disney Channel family comedy Girl Meets World. Norton first appeared in the episode Girl Meets Sludge in Season two, Episode 24, which will be followed by episodes of the new season in February 2016.

TheBlaze Inc. and Dish Network reached a multiyear renewal agreement for continued carriage of TheBlaze, Glenn Beck’s news, information and entertainment network. The network initially launched on the satellite carrier in September 2012.
Lionsgate is in a distribution pact with David Ellison’s Skydance Media. The deal, announced at Mipcom, dovetails with the launch of the Skydance International, which houses Skydance’s premium TV properties around the globe following their US broadcast. Skydance series Grace And Frankie and Manhattan are covered in the new pact, as are several properties in development.
Keshet International and China-based production company Huace Group/Croton Media are partnering up. Huace Group/Croton Media will develop local versions of KI’s scripted properties Traffic Light and Loaded for Chinese audiences and Keshet Studios will option Huace Group/Croton Media’s Dating Hunter for the US market, representing the first Chinese format to be re-versioned for the US market.
Disney Media Distribution licensed ABC Studios thriller The Catch to broadcasters in 186 territories worldwide, including France, Italy, Denmark, Hong Kong and China. The series is exec-produced by Shondaland’s Shonda Rhimes. Disney also licensed The Muppets reboot to broadcasters in 122 territories worldwide including the UK, Ireland, Italy, Vietnam, South Africa, China and Afghanistan.
It’s sunny skies for DHX Media and Sony Pictures Animation. Their animated co-production Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, commissioned by Teletoon in Canada, has been picked up by Turner Broadcasting for its second flagship kids channel, Boomerang, across EMEA, APAC, and Latin America.

The Miley Cyrus-hosted Saturday Night Live season 41 premiere saw a 13 percent rise over last year’s opener in Nielsen metered-market households (4.5 rating compared with 4.0). Cyrus and guest Hillary Clinton (aka Val the bartender) helped SNL reach its highest household rating since January 24, when Blake Shelton was the host and musical guest.
The series premiere of CBS medical drama Code Black added nearly 3 million viewers with Live+3 viewing and increased its A18-49 rating by 53 percent, according to Nielsen ratings for Wednesday, Sept. 30. With L3 added, Code Black remained first in its time period in viewers and tied for the top spot among A25-54.
ABC’s new series Quantico held 100 percent in the A18-49 demo in week two, and built on its debut in A18-34 and W18-34. Surging from its lead-in for the second week in a row at 10p (58 percent) the series (1.9/6) was Sunday’s top broadcast drama in A18-49 at 1.9/6, according to Nielsen data.
Velocity closed out summer by delivering its best-ever third quarter primetime numbers in several key demos including Men 25-54 (up 5 percent), A18-49 (5 percent) and Men 18-49 (13 percent), according to Nielsen Live+3 data. Since launching in October 2011, the network’s delivery among its Men 25-54 target demo has grown 142 percent.
VH1’s primetime ratings for the third quarter rose 34 percent over the prior quarter among A18-49, according to Nielsen ratings. Total Day ratings also saw an increase, of 21 percent.
FOX Business Network’s Lou Dobbs Tonight topped CNBC in total viewers for this past week, 136,000 versus 114,000 total viewers. Dobbs also had its first ever September monthly sweep in total viewers.
Fueled by original series including Babies Behaving Badly, Discovery Family Channel saw growth across all dayparts year-over-year in the third quarter, including primetime households up 9 percent and A18-49 up 11 percent. In primetime, Babies was the net’s best debut of an original series for among W25-54 delivery.
Discovery had its highest rated and most watched third quarter ever in 3Q15 in Total Viewers P2+ delivery and P25-54 rating in L+3. This marks the third consecutive quarter Discovery Channel has set viewership and ratings records.

Friday A18-49 Analysis: ABC took top honors among A18-49 viewers Friday, scoring 1.4/5, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p and 8:30p, the network’s Last Man Standing (1.5/2) and Dr. Ken (1.5/6) tied with the first half-hour of CBS’ Amazing Race (1.5/2) and bested third-place Fox with Grandfathered (0.8/3). ABC’s Shark Tank swallowed the competition at 9p with a 1.7/6, followed by CBS and NBC, tied for second with Hawaii Five-0 and the first half of Dateline, respectively, with 1.1/4. At 10p, CBS newcomer Blue Bloods took top honors with 1.3/5, beating out ABC’s 20/20 and the second part of Dateline, which tied at 1.1/4.

Tish Graham has been named VP, broadcast technology, for the ABC Owned Television Station Group. Graham has been with the ABC Owned TV Station Group for 29 years, most recently at the ABC owned station in Houston, KTRK.
TRX, the online marketplace for secondary TV and video rights, hired Matt Honeybone as CFO and Jennifer Buzzelli as head of North American operations.
