10.04.16 Good morning. It’s Tuesday October 4, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Major League Baseball detailed broadcast plans for the postseason with the action set to begin tonight at 8p with Orioles/Blue Jays at 8p on TBS, while Giants/Mets play the NL Wild Card game tomorrow at 8p on ESPN. Thursday sees the Wild Card winner facing the Rangers t 4:30p with Red Sox/Indians at 8p with four games running on Friday beginning at 1p with Game 2 of the Rangers series, followed by Red Sox/Indians at 4:30p, Dodgers/Nationals at 5:30 and the NL Wild Card winner/Cubs at 9p.
Tonight’s AL Wild Card matchup sees Ernie Johnson offering play-by-play on TBS with analysts Ron Darling and Cal Ripken, Jr. with reporter Sam Ryan with network coverage set to include a new studio layout and design; the use of virtual ballpark graphics in front and to the side of the new curved desk and a new desk that includes a curved LED monitor for graphics, statistics and sponsor information. In addition, the channel’s postseason game coverage will serve up a new top of screen score bar and corresponding graphics package; two cameras positioned at the foul poles to shoot straight up and assess fair and foul home run balls; five super slo-mo HD cameras as well as a LiveVu camera.
Meanwhile, MLB Network, which will carry Game Two of the NLDS pitting the NL Wild Card winner/Cubs as well as Game Three of the NLDS between the Nationals/Dodgers, will offer a free preview of the channel to video customers of AT&T U-verse, Comcast, Cox, DIRECTV, DISH Network, Frontier, RCN and Verizon FiOS from Oct. 6-11. In each telecast, MLB Network will offer continuous game coverage during pitching changes by using a split-screen format in commercial breaks and use for the first time Pitchcast tracking of every pitch as well as Shift Trax, to offer live and in-depth metrics about every play.
NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the US Team’s win at the 2016 Ryder Cup wrapped up Sunday on the broadcast channel with 4.3 million average viewers tuning in and a 2.72 household rating, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals. Overall, Sunday’s action grew 95% over the previous tournament in Scotland. Across all three days, the 2016 Ryder Cup totaled 35.1 million live minutes, 487,000 unique devices, and an average minute audience of 22,000 across all digital platforms. Around the dial, Friday handed Golf Channel with its most-watched day in history claiming 673,000 average viewers.
SNF saw the Steelers’ blowout win NBC notch a 11.0/18 in overnight Nielsen numbers to carry the channel to a primetime win. The Steelers’ 22-0 first quarter score over the Chiefs ranked as the most-lopsided opening quarter in 155 NBC SNF games. Top markets: Pittsburgh 43.3/62; KC 26.7/40; ; Richmond 16.4/25; Dayton 15.8/24; Norfolk 15.7/24.
Meanwhile, the NFL on CBS, which offered regional coverage on Sunday, pulled an average overnight household rating/share of 10.6/22, for a 2% uptick over last year. Meanwhile, the network’s game from London earned an average overnight household rating/share of 5.5/15.
ESPN laid out its roster of NBA game commentators for the upcoming season, which will feature play-by-play from Mike Breen, Mark Jones, Dave Pasch, Ryan Ruocco. Analysts on deck this year will include: Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, Hubie Brown, Doug Collins, Doris Burke. In addition, Doris Burke and Lisa Salters will once again lead game reporters throughout the season. Collins transitions to a full-time game analyst role for the network this season.
NBA TV’s Open Court series begins its sixth season Wednesday at 6p with a panel of NBA head coaches: Doc Rivers, Tom Thibodeau, Mike D’Antoni and Terry Stotts. Open Court will be televised the first three weeks in October leading up to the 2016-17 NBA season, with additional feature episodes airing later in the season.
Golf Channel is dedicating today to Arnold Palmer, celebrating his life and legacy and including live coverage of Arnold Palmer’s memorial service at 11a from the St. Vincent College basilica in Latrobe, Pa. Morning Drive and Golf Central will both be onsite throughout the morning prior to the memorial service. At 1p, the network will feature a special airing of Arnie abd continues at 5p with highlights of Palmer’s 1960 Masters victory.
Speaking of Golf Channel, the network debuts Driver vs. Driver presented by Wilson, showcasing “the trials and tribulations of aspiring golf equipment designers as they collaborate with the award-winning Wilson LABS innovation team to develop golf’s next cutting edge driver” tonight at 10p. The seven episode series concludes with a grand prize of $500,000 in cash. Three days later on Black Friday (Nov. 25), the newest Wilson Staff driver inspired by the winning concept will be available for purchase Melanie Collins hosts.
The Western Collegiate Hockey Association locked in a deal to bring back its men’s games to the American Sports Network. The channel will carry two Association games as part of ASN’s Friday night college hockey package beginning with Bemidji State/Bowling Green on Jan. 6 at 8:30p. Both games, along with the entire ASN college hockey package, will be shown on select affiliates of the Sinclair Networks Groups and on several Regional Sports Networks around the country.
The third season of the FIA Formula E Championship revs up on Oct. 8 at 3:30a on FS1 and FOX Sports GO live from Hong Kong, with a replay on Oct. 9 at 3p or 4:30p on FOX. The 2016-17 season is highlighted by the recently announced debut of Formula E in New York. Ralph Sheheen hosts FOX Sports coverage, with the returning Formula E broadcast team of Jack Nicholls, Dario Franchitti and Nicki Shields.
CBS Sports locked in its SEC on CBS football game for Oct. 15, selecting Alabama/Tennessee. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce call the contest.
Tonight, NBCSN offers a special one-hour Team USA Awards show tonight at 10p. Athletes will include the likes of Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Allyson Felix and Brad Snyder. The event was hosted by American Ninja Warrior hosts Akbar Gbajabiamila and Matt Iseman.
SNY announced that the network ranks as baseball’s most watched regional sports network in the market during the 2016 regular season. For the season, Mets live game broadcasts on SNY averaged a 2.73 rating for a 4% rise over 2015 along with 263,850 total viewers.

The Pac-12 locked in a multi-year deal with 76 that will see the retail gas brand serve as presenting sponsor of the Pac-12 Football Championship Game. The agreement with 76 marks the first time a presenting sponsor has been attached to the game in its six-year history and the brand will be incorporated into the mark located at the 50-yard line with additional signage throughout the stadium, plus pre and in-game promotional tie-ins, digital assets, premium tickets and VIP hospitality. “76 is an iconic brand in the West making it an ideal match for the Pac-12,” Pac-12 Networks Executive Vice President of Sales Neil Davis said. “The Pac-12 Football Championship Game is one of our biggest events of the year and we are thrilled to partner with such a fan-friendly brand like 76.”
WWE and Susan G. Komen are extending their partnership for the fifth consecutive year in the fight against breast cancer through Komen’s More Than Pink movement. WWE will create PSA’s that will highlight three survivors, Regina Foreman, Angelica Martinez and Kelly Sherman, “who not only won their battle against breast cancer but are now taking action to help fight the disease.” WWE will also utilize its global platforms including WWE Network, TV broadcasts, live events, and digital and social media to generate awareness and encourage action with WWE entrance ramp, ring skirts and digital signage will be co-branded to promote the fight against breast cancer while WWE Superstars wear co-branded More Than Pink apparel.
RyderCup.com and the Ryder Cup App, managed by Turner Sports in partnership with The PGA of America and the European Tour, scored record-setting metrics across all platforms for its live coverage of this year’s tournament. The two platforms generated 3.3 million live video views over the three-day event to score new highs and notch a 250% increase over the comparable coverage in 2014. Additionally, the 1.2 million live hours of consumption up 293% over 2014 scored an additional record, are an all-time high for the event.
Richard Childress Racing is partnering with NASCAR Digital Media to oversee design and development of the organization’s new website with a soft launch in December followed by a full rollout in early 2017. RCR becomes the first race team to collaborate with the fast-growing NDM on a website build. According to NASCAR, NDM will build rcrracing.com “to accommodate RCR’s growing number of fans across multiple devices, with a flexible design offering multiple ways to present content. The revamped site will feature driver-specific content, complete race and driver schedules, videos, photo galleries, race updates and more.”
Bing is going big for eSports, with Microsoft announcing that users who search Bing for the likes of “league of legends 2016” or “lol worlds 2016” will also get information on when matches will take place, group standings and how different teams are ranking within their group. In addition, fans can click over on the ‘Matches’ tab to see the matches the team is scheduled to play while Bing’s predictions for matches will be indicated by a blue label next to the team predicted to win and its likelihood. The 2016 League of Legends World Championships, which are going on now until October 29, will be the first event that Bing will cover.
