IN THE NEWS

Peacock comedy “Girls5Eva” is taking the show on the road – to Netflix. Season three of the series from Universal Television, about a reunited girl band, was greenlit by Netflix, which also acquired co-exclusive rights to the first two seasons.

Comcast eked past analysts’ estimates for 3Q22, with total revenue of $29.8 billion. At NBCUniversal, revenue dipped 4% to $9.6 billion, but taking last year’s Olympics out of the picture, the media division gained 4%. Peacock added 2 million subscribers in the quarter, for a total of over 15 million. What’s the streaming strategy? “We’ve said all along that our strategy in streaming is different than some of the premium SVOD players like Netflix and Disney+,” said NBCU CEO Jeff Shell on an earnings call. “We view it as a part of our business. We manage it as one. We make decisions on programming as one, we sell advertising across the business as one. As viewership shifts from linear to Peacock, we want Peacock to get to a level and a scale that causes our business to be balanced as consumer sentiments and advertiser sentiments change.”

Revenue for TelevisaUnivision grew 9% year to date and 5% in the third quarter, with US national advertising rising 8% and Mexico advertising up 9%, reported the company. (Univision merged with Grupo Televisa in January 2022.) The company did not offer streaming stats for ViX, but CEO Wade Davis said, “We believe we can deliver a profitable streaming service by the end of next year … our peak losses will occur in this year.”

Season four of The CW’s “Nancy Drew,” slated to premiere midseason, will be its last. “Our hearts are full of gratitude, knowing that we are able to bring this chapter to a close with intentionality, inclusivity and kindness — and of course with plenty of sleuthing twists, supernatural scares and star-crossed romance along the way,” said showrunners Noga Landau and Melinda Hsu Taylor.

“City on a Hill” will end its run without such intentionality – the Showtime drama starring Kevin Bacon and Aldis Hodge has been canceled after three seasons.

Starz historical drama “The Serpent Queen” landed an early season two renewal. “’The Serpent Queen’ is distinctly modern, darkly comedic and completely unexpected,” said Kathryn Busby, President, Original Programming, STARZ. “Catherine De Medici’s story is the perfect complement to our female-forward slate”.

Amy Schmumer will threepeat as host of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” on November 5. Musical guest will be Steve Lacy.

Ninety-eight percent of brands believe that CTV advertising will be bigger than mobile TV advertising, with 25% claiming it will happen in 2-3 years, according to AppsFlyer’s new study, Connected TV Trends, 2022-23, Advertiser and Viewer Perceptions, combining viewer and brand insights. Other highlights include:
Brands are planning to increase their CTV advertising budget by 44% in 2023.86% of consumers are willing to see ads on CTV, especially if they are relevant to them.64% of businesses are running direct response campaigns on CTV.

TV Studios has granted exclusive rights in the metaverse for “The Voice” to the Virtual Brand Group. VGB will collaborate with ITV to develop, build and operate The Voice in the Metaverse, with elements including virtual experiences and social games, a web3 loyalty program and a metaverse global competition. “’The Voice’ was, in many ways, an early version of the Metaverse where anonymity and being whoever you want rule. Premion was already certified against ad fraud, and now we are also brand-safety certified, which requires a separate and rigorous vetting process.”

“Twitter can obviously not become a free-for-all hellscape where anything can be said with no consequences!”, wrote Elon Musk in an open letter to advertisers on Thursday, the day before he’s scheduled to acquire the company, addressing concerns over moderation policies. He also reassured advertisers that despite suggesting in the past they he would like to remove ads from Twitter, there will still be a place for them on the platform. “Fundamentally, Twitter aspires to be the most respected advertising platform in the world that strengthens your brand and grows your enterprise,” he said. “To everyone who has partners with us, I thank you. Let us build something extraordinary together.”

Amazon reported revenue rose 15% to $127.1 billion in 3Q22, while earnings came in at 28 cents per share on a diluted basis. Profit exceeded analysts’ estimates, but the revenue was a bit short of expectations. Not good enough, said Wall Street, sending shares down 20% in after-hours trading.
