CNN staffers will face “unsettling” changes at the company due to global economic uncertainty, wrote CNN Chairman and CEO Chris Licht in a memo to employees. “These changes will not be easy because they will affect people, budgets, and projects,” warned Licht. “We will be strategic in this process and will minimize the impact on our core newsgathering operation and Digital, both of which have already executed smart changes. Let me be clear: I will not allow these changes to affect our position as the world’s leading news source, and we will continue to invest in growth areas.” Licht added that the goal is to have most of the decisions necessary made by the end of the year.
Put away the bathing suit. NATPE has canceled its 2023 Global Conference and Marketplace, which was to take place in Nassau, Bahamas from January 17-19. NATPE announced earlier this month that the group had filed for Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code, having been adversely impacted by the pandemic. No decision yet on NATPE Budapest or other 2023 events.
DirecTV has asked the 27 stations that went dark over a carriage dispute to return their signals through Election Day, offering to pay the stations whatever new rate ends up being negotiated retroactively. The stations cover about 4 million homes in 25 markets and are owned by Mission Broadcasting and White Knight Broadcasting. “This is a critical time in American political life. We are less than two weeks from one of the most important Congressional midterm elections in American History, and gubernatorial elections in 36 states,” said DirecTV in a press release. “The results of this midterm will have a profound impact on some of the most important political, public health and economic issues of our time.”
Season two of coming-of-age comedy “Chad,” canceled amid cost-cutting moves at TBS, has been picked up by The Roku Channel. The season had already been completed. Roku also picked up non-exclusive rights to season one.
Netflix renewed “The Upshaws” for a third season. The remaining episodes of season two of the comedy, starring Wanda Sykes, Mike Epps and Kim Fields, will return in early 2023.
Kenan Thompson will repeat as host of “The People’s Choice Awards,” airing on NBC and E! on Tuesday, December 6 at 9p. Thompson is nominated in the comedy TV Star category for “Saturday Night Live.”

Apple TV+ has landed new comedy series “Still Up,” starring Antonia Thomas (“Lovesick”) and Craig Roberts (“Red Oaks”) as insomniac friends who have no secrets except for their feelings for each other. The production comes from Various Artists Limited (“I May Destroy You”) and is executive produced by Paul Schlesinger (“Twenty Twelve”) and Phil Clarke (“I May Destroy You”).
Vella Lovell (“Mr. Mayor”) has joined the cast of Fox’s upcoming workplace comedy “Animal Control.” The series, starring Joel McHale, is slated for a mid-season debut.
CBS is developing “The Bad News Bears,” based on the 1976 movie. The reboot, from Kapital Entertainment and TrillTV, focuses on a divorced mom who coaches a team of misfits. CBS Studios is the studio. CBS’ previous “The Bad News Bears” series aired from 1979-80.
Amazon has ordered a series spinoff of the 2016 animated feature “Sausage Party,” with the film’s Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton onboard, joined by Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester. The launch date for “Sausage Party: Foodtopia,” currently in production, is slated for 2024. The series is a co-production between Annapurna Television, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
The reboot of psychological drama “Mujeres Asesinas” will premiere exclusively on ViX+ on November 4. The anthology was one of the most popular series on Mexican television.
“Garcia!”, based on the graphic novel by Santiago Garcia, premieres tomorrow, October 28 on HBO Max. The spy series follows a young reporter who becomes embroiled in an elaborate political conspiracy.
Season two of “Whitstable Pearl” kicks off Monday, November 28 on Acorn TV. Two episodes will premiere weekly through December 12.
Discovery’s “Gold Rush: White Water” returns for season six on Friday, November 11 at 9p.
STREAMING
Samsung TV Plus has added new channels including MotorTrend, Estrella Games, Rovr Pets, new Local News markets, and – back for the holidays – Fireplace 4K. The new channels will be available across the US on Samsung Smart TVs and galaxy devices.
Pluto TV is launching its Seasons Greetings category on November 1, featuring nine holiday-themed channels. Offerings include Hallmark and Lifetime holiday movies, music, cooking, fireplaces and light displays.
LGBTQ streaming network DivaBoxOffice.tv premieres December 1, with over 100 hours of programming. “The demand for queer programming is only growing with each generation becoming increasingly more fluid in their sexual orientations and gender identities than ever before,” said President and CEO Christin Baker. “As the old adage goes, we are queer and we’re here to stay.”

Havas Media is partnering with Samba TV to integrate Samba TV’s OTT and linear television viewing data into Converged, HMG’s proprietary audience and data management platform. With this partnership, HMG North America will become the first major agency holding company to fully integrate Samba TV’s television and gaming viewership data. “Modern media is about more than just Reach and Frequency – our approach prioritizes identifying the right environment based on the ability to foster meaningful connections with viewers,” said Mike Bregman, Havas Media Group North America Chief Data Officer. “This partnership allows us to understand how consumers spend time across screens and the ability to analyze the unique value media has for each one of our clients.”

IAB Tech Lab has released a roadmap outlining the latest Tech Lab standards the digital advertising ecosystem should leverage as they plan for 2023. It includes recommendations for recent releases like Seller Defined Audiences, ads.txt, the new Digital Video and CTV Ad Format guidelines, as well as other Tech Lab standards. “As we enter the last quarter of the year, our team at IAB Tech Lab is busy with strategic planning for next year; and I assume your product and engineering teams are doing the same,” said Shailley Singh, EVP, Product & COO, IAB Tech Lab. “It’s important to regularly review standards updates and make sure you’re incorporating them into your roadmap. Meta reported revenue of $27.7 billion, beating estimates of $27.4 billion, but dipped 4% from the year-ago quarter, reflecting the digital advertising slowdown for social media companies.

The X Games are on the move, with MSP Sports Capital picking up a majority interest from ESPN Productions, Inc. for the famed games although ESPN Productions, Inc. will retain a minority, non-controlling position. In addition, ESPN will serve as the domestic linear broadcast partner as part of a multi-year agreement finalized in conjunction with the transaction. MSP will assume day-to-day operational control of the X Games business. MSP Sports Capital will work on “infusing new energy to the brand, prioritizing premiere athlete and fan experiences, and investing in technologies to launch the brand into the future” with the event now overseen by former Twitch executive Steven Flisler as X Games CEO.
ESPN reports that Monday Night Football has averaged 15.3 million viewers this season, up 11% year-to-year. Through the first seven weeks of the season. Meanwhile, Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli notched 1.5 million viewers on ESPN2 in Week 7, and the alternate telecast is now averaging 1.5 million viewers through its first four editions this season, directly in line through the same number of episodes in 2021.
