IN THE NEWS
As criticism for sensationalism in “The Crown” grew fiercer in the wake of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Netflix added a disclaimer to the season five trailer: “Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatization tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign.” The new season starts in the 1990s, amid Charles and Diana’s troubled marriage.
ABC gave a full season order for freshman spin-off “The Rookie: Feds,” for a total of 22 episodes. The police drama is doing especially well in Live+7 multiplatform viewing, seeing a lift from an average 2.2 million viewers to 6.4 million.
Prime Video’s critically acclaimed dramedy “As We See It,” following twentysomething roommates on the autism spectrum, has been canceled after one season. The series was created by Jason Katims (“Parenthood”).
A daily two-hour news block launches today, October 24 on Allen Media Group‘s African American-focused news, lifestyle, sports and entertainment platform theGrio. “The Grio With Eboni K. Williams” and “The Grio With Mark Lamont Hill” will be hosted by lawyer, author and television personality Williams (“The Real Housewives of New York City), and author, activist, and scholar Hill (“BET News”). The two “will bring much-needed new voices to the global conversation,” said Byron Allen, Founder/Chairman/CEO of Allen Media Group. “The Grio News has a strong and trusted relationship with the Black community. Allen Media Group is committed to investing heavily in The Grio, working with the best talent, and increasing our worldwide distribution as we continue to deliver excellence.”
Lara Logan has lost another soapbox. An interview on Newsmax with Eric Bolling, during which Logan talked about a Satanic “global cabal,” the racist “Great Replacement” theory and other Q-Anon talking points, was followed by this statement from the network: “Newsmax condemns in the strongest terms the reprehensible statements made by Lara Logan and her views do not reflect our network. We have no plans to interview her again.” Logan was fired by Fox News last year after comparing Anthony Fauci to Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele.
Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” broke the Spotify record for most streams of an album in a single day. “How did I get this lucky, having you guys out here doing something this mind blowing?! Like what even just happened?!” posted the singer to her fans.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will not be hosting press conferences during the current awards cycle. Press conferences exclusively for HFPA members, among other practices, had come under scrutiny in 2021, leading NBC to pull the show. The 2023 ceremony airs January 10.
Sunday’s season finale of HBO’s “House of Dragon” was leaked online ahead of time, and HBO wasn’t happy. “We are aware that the tenth episode of ‘House of the Dragon’ has been posted on illegal torrent sites,” said a network spokesperson. “It appears to have originated from a distribution partner in the EMEA region. HBO is aggressively monitoring and pulling these copies from the internet. We’re disappointed that this unlawful action has disrupted the viewing experience for loyal fans of the show, who will get to see a pristine version of the episode when it premieres Sunday on HBO and HBO Max, where it will stream exclusively in 4K.”

ESPN landed a rights extension with Formula 1 in a deal that will now see races remain on ESPN Networks through the 2025 season.
