IN THE NEWS

Paramount canceled the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards, slated for November 5 in Paris. Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life,” said a Paramount spokesperson.

Disney is moving downtown. In 2025, the company expects to relocate its properties to NYC’s Hudson Square – including shifting “Good Morning America” from its signature Times Square studio. Not to worry, said ABC News. “‘Good Morning America’ is defined by the strength of our team in front of and behind the camera, quality of our reporting, and the long, trusted relationship with our viewers,” said the division in a statement. “Moving all ABC News teams to our new state-of-the-art building was a strategic decision that will allow for more collaboration and innovation.”

The FCC voted 3 to 2 to proceed with a proposal the restore open internet rules, prohibiting broadband providers from blocking or slowing down services. The net neutrality regulations had been repealed during the Trump administration. “Now is the time for our rules of the road for internet service providers to reflect the reality that internet access is a necessity for daily life,” said Jessica Rosenworcel, the chair of the FCC.

The FCC also received a request from a group of Democratic senators to review whether to extend regulations for broadcast and cable to streaming outlets. “As the expert agency, the Commission should be developing a record and recommendations to ensure that our regulatory system – which has enabled a thriving locally focused broadcast system that is the envy of the world – is not undermined by the explosion of new technologies that were not foreseen even a mere decade ago.”

In a new Gallup poll, just 32% of Americans said they trust the mass media “a great deal” or “a fair amount” to report the news is a full, fair, accurate way. That’s the lowest since 2016, and down from 34% in 2022 and 36% in 2021. A record 39% said they had no trust at all in the media. Back in the ‘70s, trust in news media was reported averaged 70%.

Google cut 40 to 45 jobs in Google News, but the layoffs shouldn’t be interpreted as a diminished dedication to news, said a Google spokesperson. “We’re deeply committed to a vibrant information ecosystem, and news is a part of that long-term investment,” said the rep. “We’ve made some internal changes to streamline our organization.” As for efforts to stop the spread of fake news, “These internal changes have no impact on our misinformation and information quality work in News,” said the spokesperson.

SAG-AFTRA members should stock up on generic witch hats and skeleton costumes for Halloween, because dressing up as a character on a series or movie could violate strike rules. Advice from the union: “Choose costumes inspired by generalized characters,” or “dress up as characters from non-struck content, like an animated TV show.”

Netflix picked up “Sweet Magnolias” for season four. Season three of the hit romantic drama debuted July 20.

Also renewed is “Gen V.” Amazon Prime’s spinoff of “The Boys” has its season one finale on November 3.

Steve Krakauer is joining political website The Hill as an opinion contributor. Additionally, he will serve as an on-air contributor for Nexstar’s cable news network NewsNation. Krakauer currently serves as the executive producer of SiriusXM’s “The Megyn Kelly Show.”

Kartoon Studios’ “Shaq’s Garage” is rolling out on YouTube Kids and Tubi. The animated kids’ series stars and is exec produced by Shaquille O’Neal.

TECH TALK

Senior leaders in US organizations are failing to implement artificial intelligence in the workplace despite over half of employees believing their company should institute an AI policy, according to Pew research conducted by Cint. Findings include:
· Only 21% of respondents’ organizations have initiatives to encourage using AI, and only 19% of respondents’ organizations have an AI policy.
· 75% of respondents report being concerned about implementing AI at work. The top three concerns respondents noted were: AI’s potential to reduce human creativity and workers becoming dependent on AI, losing the ability to apply human judgment to decision making, and surveillance of AI tools.
· 64% of respondents are concerned about the use of AI in advertising, primarily noting the loss of human creativity, loss of human judgment and decision making, and loss of social interaction.
· Sentiment toward AI use at work varies significantly across generations. Gen Z and Millennials are most likely to have used AI (39% and 36% have, respectively), vs. 12% of Boomers and 24% of Gen X.
Seventy-seven percent of survey respondents who are using AI at work report they have told their manager they are using AI, and 74% think that more employees at their company should use it. Only about a quarter (26%) of respondents would be nervous to tell their manager that they were using AI.
