Trevor Noah is leaving “The Daily Show” seven years after he took the reins from Jon Stewart. Noah announced the news during the show’s episode last Thursday, noting: “I realized after the seven years, my time is up, but in the most beautiful way.”
It’s a wrap! Thursday and Friday, thought leaders took to the stage at Cynopsis’s 4th annual Big TV Conference to discuss innovative solutions to challenges facing executives in the fast-evolving content multiverse. (A lucky few also went home having scored sweepstakes prizes like luggage, pickleball equipment, an iPad and more. And the winner of our trivia contest will be enjoying a new 65” television. The conference started off with a lively conversation about investing in minority-owned media – including advice from moderator Leonard Burnett, Jr., co-founder of Homestead Entertainment & Hero Collective, that was repeated more than once over the course of the two days: “Be brief, brother be brief!”. What followed were insights from industry leaders, fresh thinking on topics from personalization, to partnerships, to – of course – measurement. It was wonderful to see so many of you there!
Disney pulled its cluster of 20 channels from Dish Network’s satellite television and Sling TV services across the US on Friday after the two companies failed to reach a carriage-renewal deal. Disney Channel, ESPN, Freeform, FX and National Geographic are among the networks no longer on Dish TV and Sling TV at press time.
Newsy, the free over-the-air news net, will relaunch as Scripps News beginning January 1. The rebrand by parent the E.W. Scripps Company comprises the network and streaming app. Newsy will serve both national audiences and Scripps local stations. The news division will be led by Kate O’Brian, who’s been serving as news chief for Scripps-owned networks including Court TV.
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced winners of the documentary categories of the 43rd annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards. CBS News, ABC News and Vice News were top winners with eight statuettes, followed by CNN and The New York Times with five each and CBS and NBC with three apiece. Sir David Attenborough, biologist, humanist and filmmaker, and Judy Woodruff, anchor and managing editor of “PBS NewsHour,” were honored with Lifetime Achievement awards.
Pop artist AJ McLean, performing under the drag persona Poppy Love, was crowned the winner of “RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race” season 2 on Friday. McLean earned $100,000 for his charity of choice, Trans Lifeline.

“Community” fans, rejoice. Peacock ordered the long-awaited movie based on the Emmy-winning NBC comedy. Original series creator Dan Harmon and exec producer Andrew Guest are behind the film, which will reunite original stars Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong. Peacock is also acquiring the full series library on a non-exclusive basis. Set in a community college in Colorado, the series originally ran for five seasons on NBC before moving to Yahoo! Screen for its final season.
Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, through his G-Unit Film & Television, is entering the horror film space with a three-feature film deal with Eli Roth, 3Blackdot and Electromagnetic Productions. The three initial movies in the partnership are “The Gun,” “Trackmaster” and “Creature House”—through all of which Jackson aims to increase BIPOC representation within the horror genre.
E! has finished casting and begun production on its first two original rom-com film “Why Can’t I Be Molly Ringwald?” (working title) and “Dating Wise” (working title). Em Haine (“Reginald The Vampire”) will star in “Why Can’t I Be Molly Ringwald?” and Anja Savcic (“Loudermilk”) is toplining “Dating Wisdom.”
Double Nickel Entertainmentis creating a limited TV series about the life of Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law Jo van Gogh-Bonger. The indie studio picked up the scripted and documentrary rights to Jo van Gogh-Bonger: The Woman Who Made Vincent Famous and is co-operating with the Vincent van Gogh museum to tell the story of van Gogh-Bonger, who was married to van Gogh’s brother Theo and after his death when she was just 28, was left with no income, a newborn baby and hundreds of van Gogh paintings.
Casting notes: Robin Weigert (“Deadwood”), Abby McEnany (“Work In Progress”) and Eric Graise (“Step Up: High Water”) will star opposite Justin Hartley in CBS drama pilot “The Never Game”… Oakes Fegley (“The Fabelmans”) and Dayo Okeniyi (“See, Rise”) are in as leads opposite Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly in Apple TV+’s “Dark Matter”… Charmaine Bingwa (“The Good Fight”) and Nkeki Obi-Melekwe (“Tina -The Tina Turner Musical”) scored roles as series regulars in Showtime’s “King Shaka.” Tony Kgoroge (“Invictus”), Sindi Dlatu (“The River”) and Bahle Hadebe (“Bone of My Bones”) also have been cast in recurring roles in the series.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
October will see a slate of series and season premieres for Nat Geo. “Locked Up Abroad” returns Wednesday, October 5 at 10p, followed by new series “Primal Survivor: The Andes” on Tuesday, October 18 at 9p. On Nat Geo Wild, “Critter Fixers” is back for season 4 on Saturday, October 8 at 9p.
“Impact x Nightline,” ABC News Studios’ weekly streaming news magazine, will stream exclusively on Hulu beginning Thursday, October 6. Each week, ABC News correspondents will take viewers straight to the source of the week’s big stories and some no one has heard of yet.
“Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy” travels back to CNN on Sunday, October 9 at 9p. Season 2 will see Tucci venturing to Sardinia, Calabria, Puglia and Liguria across four new episodes.
Magnolia Network dropped a trailer for “Fixer Upper: The Castle,” which bows concurrently on Magnolia, HBO Max and Discovery+ on Friday, October 14 at 9p. The name says it all—this iteration of the “Fixer Upper” franchise goes even bigger and bolder.
DC’s new Batman preschool series heads to Cartoonito on Cartoon Network on Monday, October 17 at 9a and will stream the following day on the Cartoonito hub on HBO Max. Half-hour prequel special, “Secret Origin of the Batwheels,” is streaming now on Cartoonito on HBO Max and coming to the Cartoonito block on Cartoon Network on Saturday, October 15 at 4p.
Comedy Central announced the return of new eps of mockumentary-style series “Reno 911” on Wednesday, October 19 at 10:30p. The series, which ran for six seasons on Comedy Central, lets viewers ride shotgun with the men and women of the Reno Sheriff’s Department as they lay down the law and put their lives on the line.
Apple original series “Echo 3,” the 10-episode thriller from Mark Boal (“The Hurt Locker,” “Zero Dark Thirty”) will debut Wednesday, November 23. Set in South America, story follows a brilliant young scientist who is the emotional heart of a small American family. When she goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and husband, who both have deep military experience and complicated pasts, struggle to find her.
COMING UP
TCM marks the 75th anniversary of the Hollywood Blacklist with three nights of films, including the premiere of TCM original doc “High Noon on the Waterfront” and Roger C. Memos’ acclaimed 2015 documentary “Marsha Hunt’s Sweet Adversity.” Content will air on consecutive Thursdays, October 13, 20 and 27.
AXS TV is celebrating Sammy Hagar’s 75th birthday with a more than 24-hour rock’n’roll road trip marathon airing October 12-13. Programming highlights include jam sessions and conversations with Dave Grohl, Alice Cooper, Toby Keith, Mick Fleetwood and birthday messages from Sebastian Bach, Lisa Loeb and more.
Docuseries “Raphaelismo” will debut on Vix+ Thursday, October 6 followed by “Al Grito de Guerra,’ an eight-ep doc that tells the story of the Mexican national team as it tries to qualify for soccer’s World Cup, on Thursday, October 13. Doc “Los Exorcistas,” an examination of exorcism, and “Informe Qatar,” about the teams and stars competing at the World Cup, both debut Thursday, October 20.

The Walt Disney Company pulled multiple channels off of Dish Network’s satellite platform as well as Sling TV after the companies failed to reach a new carriage agreement on Saturday. The blackout was announced by Dish Network in a statement sent to reporters early Saturday morning and impacts around a dozen channels owned and operated by Disney, including ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN News, ACC Network, National Geographic, NatGeo Kids, FX, FXX, FXM, Freeform, the Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD.
Delta Air Lines debuted its official LA28 Olympic Partner logo as part of LA28’s Integrated ‘A’ design that incorporates Delta’s brand IP – an opportunity that is a first in Olympic and Paralympic history. The Delta x LA28 integrated emblem features the airline’s bold, dynamic and notable widget in two forms as the “A”, showcasing the proud partnership and shared values between the two brands. The two designed emblems are separately accompanied by the Olympic rings and Paralympic agitos.
The International Tennis Federation said that Gainbridge Insurance Agency signed a deal to become the title partner for the Billie Jean King Cup,. The alliance begins with the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Finals, scheduled for Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Scotland, from Nov. 8-13 with 12 national teams.
Spanish top-tier football league LaLiga locked in a new content partnership with social media platform Snapchat designed to bring premium content to millions of Snapchat’s fanbase. Across a show titled ‘LaLiga Show Time,’ the short clip platform’s global society of over 347 million individuals will have the chance to witness weekly soccer highlights, historic archives, behind-the-scenes content, top goals and saves of the season.

US advertising sales are projected to pass $300 billion for first time ever in 2022. This according to Magna’s latest advertising forecast, which projects that despite economic uncertainty, ad growth for all of 2022 will come in at 9.8 percent. That’s less than the 11.1 percent Magna predicted in its June forecast.

Meta Platforms, Facebook’s parent company, announced a hiring freeze, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg set forth plans to reorganize teams and reduce headcount for the first time in the company’s history. He told employees last week during a Q&A session: “I had hoped the economy would have more clearly stabilized by now, but from what we’re seeing it doesn’t yet seem like it has, so we want to plan somewhat conservatively.”
