CYNOPSIS SPORTS
09.29.15 Good morning. It’s Tuesday September 29, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Big day for NYC venues. UFC unveiled a slate of moves to bring MMA to NY and has scheduled the organization’s first, professional event in New York since the state’s ban in 1997. Set for Madison Square Garden on April 23, 2016, it will feature “UFC’s top champions competing with other world-class athletes inside the Octagon.” In addition, the promotion is also taking additional steps through the federal courts to ensure the event’s success, filing a case in federal court, reiterating its claim that the state law banning MMA events is unconstitutional. Later this week, the company will ask a federal judge to issue a preliminary injunction against New York state officials “enforcing its unconstitutional law.”
“We believe fight fans have waited long enough to experience live UFC events in the state of New York and we are thrilled to announce our first event at Madison Square Garden,” UFC Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Lawrence Epstein said. “Professional MMA is legal around of the world and it is about time New York followed suit.”
Meanwhile, WWE announced plans to keep SummerSlam home at Barclays Center for the next two years. The company joined NYC & Company and the venue in a multi-year deal to bring SummerSlam, along with Monday Night Raw and NXT back to the Brooklyn venue in August 2016 and August 2017, following last month’s shows at the site. Date will see NXT take place on Aug. 20, SummerSlam on Aug. 21 and Monday Night Raw on the 22nd next year. “Barclays Center, NYC & Company and the City of New York have been incredible partners to WWE, and we are pleased that SummerSlam Week will once again take over New York City in August of 2016 and 2017,” said John P. Saboor, WWE Executive Vice President, Special Events. “We look forward to building on the success of this year’s event to take SummerSlam Week to even greater heights.”
Organizers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are recommending a quintet of new sports and 18 events for the Games. In addition to baseball and softball, surfing and skateboarding along with karate and sports climbing made the cut proposed by the Tokyo organizing committee. The recommendation will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee, which will make a final decision in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016. The International Surfing Association was among the organizations expressing their pleasure with the decision, stating, “Tokyo 2020’s announcement today is an extraordinary moment for our sport and for the global Surfing Community. The ISA has been riding an amazing wave in this journey for Olympic inclusion and we are thrilled that Tokyo 2020 recognizes the exceptional value and youthful lifestyle that Surfing can bring to the 2020 Games.”
Sunday Night Football once again led NBC to a win this week, with the Broncos’ victory delivering a 13.8/23 in Nielsen overnight numbers. That score is up 12% over last year’s Week 3 matchup, pitting the Steelers/Panthers. On the local front, top markets included: Denver 44.8/69; Detroit 28.2/42; Las Vegas 20.0/31; Indy 19.8/34; and Milwaukee 19.7/30.
Delegations from Las Vegas and Quebec City will meet the NHL Board of Governors today in NY for presentations in the next stage of their bids for franchises. According to the Toronto Sun, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly stated that the expansion process was running smoothly and that Tuesday’s presentations could lead to a formal announcement of NHL expansion at the December owners’ meetings in Pebble Beach.
Apparently, it didn’t take long for Don Orsillo to land a new gig. ESPN is reporting that the Boston Red Sox broadcaster will land in San Diego to call Padres’ broadcasts next season, and will eventually succeed Dick Enberg as the club’s lead play-by-play voice. Orsillo’s role will include calling select national games for Fox Sports as well.
CBS Sports revealed that its SEC on CBS football game for Saturday, Oct. 10 (3:30 PM, ET) will feature *No. 8-ranked Georgia taking on Tennessee. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce call the contest from Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.
Golf Channel will celebrate one-year-out from the 2016 Ryder Cup today with coverage from Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., site of the Ryder Cup featuring an expanded Morning Drive from 7-11a. Later, the channel will offer a Golf Central special at 6:30p, followed by a Feherty Live primetime special at 9p, which will feature US Ryder Cup Captain Davis Love III and European Captain Darren Clarke.
FS1 announced plans to simulcast YES Network’s live coverage of Yankees great Yogi Berra’s funeral today at 10a. Private services are being held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, the parish Berra attended in Montclair, New Jersey.
Another outlet signed on for men’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association games with Commissioner Bill Robertson unveiling an agreement to broadcast two matchups on American Sports Network as part of the channel’s Friday night college hockey package. Viewers will be able to tune in to Alaska/Alabama Huntsville on Jan 8 and Lake Superior State/Michigan Tech on Feb. 5. Both games, along with the entire ASN college hockey package, will be shown on select affiliates of the Sinclair Networks Group and on several Regional Sports Networks around the country.
AMG/Parade is launching Athlon Sports Radio on SiriusXM, with the talk show slated to run Mondays and Tuesdays from 7-9p on SiriusXM’s College Sports Nation (channel 84). The program grows out of the company’s 10+ preseason magazines covering college, professional and fantasy football, college basketball, professional baseball, golf and NASCAR, and will be replayed several times throughout the day.
The Mid-American Conference locked in a new regional multi-year television agreement with the Buckeye Cable Sports Network (BCSN) to produce and televise MAC football, men’s and women’s basketball and multiple championship events beginning this 2015-16 academic year via a sublicense agreement with ESPN. The deal will see BCSN also own territorial sublicensing rights and will work with other regional cable operators to make games available to fans.
