Good morning. It’s Wednesday September 28, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The NHL is going big for its 100th anniversary, detailing plans to celebrate the milestone with a slate of initiatives that begin on Jan. 1 in Toronto with the NHL Centennial Classic outdoor game between the Red Wings/Maple Leafs. Wayne Gretzky is on-board to serve as the official ambassador, with events set to include a 12-month festival of events and content initiatives culminating with the anniversary of the League’s founding on Nov. 26 and first games on Dec. 19. Among the activations: NHL Centennial Truck Tour; the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade; the 100 Greatest NHL Players and Gala; Stanley Cup celebrations; documentaries; 100 Iconic NHL Moments and the NHL Time Capsule.

"A century of great players, great plays and great moments deserves a year-long celebration, and we invite everyone to join our party in 2017," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "We are delighted that Wayne Gretzky — whose spectacular contributions on the ice matched his immeasurable graciousness and popularity off the ice — will serve as our Centennial’s official ambassador as we honor all the drama, suspense, excitement and memories that have thrilled the best fans in sports for generations."

ON THE AIR

Chalk up another three years for Christopher "Mad Dog" Russo’s run at SiriusXM following a new deal between the two parties to keep his sports talk radio brand exclusively at the company. Russo will continue to host his daily all-sports show, Mad Dog Unleashed, every on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio channel.

BTN reports that its Wisconsin/Michigan State battle on Saturday ranks as the highest rated college football game in the network’s 12 metered markets, drawing a 2.1 rating. The matchup also finished as the second most-watched game in BTN2Go history with 173,491 views.

Top Rank detailed plans for its own PPV telecast pitting Pacquiao/Vargas on Nov. 5, running without a partner such as HBO or Showtime for the card. ESPN reports that the promotion will tap Brian Kenny and Stephen A. Smith as well as Timothy Bradley Jr. to serve as their live analysts while Charissa Thompson hosts the PPV. "We wanted to give the viewers a different perspective that informs and entertains and I think we have accomplished that with this fantastic team," Top Rank President Todd duBoef said. "It’s a great combination with Brian, one of television’s top TV announcers, color commentary from Stephen A. and Charissa’s balanced hosting style. The expert analysis from Tim will round this out perfectly as he is considered one of the best fighters in the world and has secured victories against both Pacquiao and Vargas."

Anthem Sports & Entertainment and Fantasy Sports Network are suing fantasy sports staple DraftKings over claims of unpaid invoices with the companies seeking at least $4.16 million in damages. According to Forbes, the complaint reads that DraftKings inked deal in which the daily fantasy company would pay $1.5 million per year, in monthly installments, for a total of three years to the media outlets.

The next edition of MLB Network Presents will spotlight Ted Williams’ historic 1941 season on Oct. 2 at 8p. Michael Chiklis narrates with commentary from the likes of Wade Boggs, George Brett, Rod Carew and the late Tony Gwynn.

Conference USA announced its initial TV lineup for the college basketball season, with over 40 contests set to be carried nationally on partners CBS Sports Network, American Sports Network and beIN SPORTS. CBS Sports Network delivers six regular-season games involving Conference USA schools, in addition to its plans to air the 2017 C-USA Basketball Championship semifinals and final. Sinclair’s American Sports Network offers up 13 men’s basketball games during the regular season, along with the Men’s Championship quarterfinals, while 10 regular-season men’s basketball games will be shown on beIN SPORTS, including nine conference match-ups.

TBS detailed plans to carry the final regular season game of David Ortiz’s career with a full MLB national telecast pitting Red Sox/Blue Jays on Oct. 2 at 3p. Ernie Johnson provides play-by-play with analysts Ron Darling and Cal Ripken, Jr. Coverage will also capture key moments on the last day of the 2016 MLB regular season with in-progress highlights and updates of any newsworthy moments and games with postseason implications as well as in-progress highlights of legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully’s final game.

Meanwhile, ESPN is also getting in on that Red Sox/Blue Jays action, announcing the addition of an MLB Postseason Impact Game telecast presented by Exxon and Mobil on Friday at 7p on ESPN2. The Sunday Night Baseball team of Dan Shulman, Aaron Boone and Jessica Mendoza with reporter Buster Olney will call the matchup.

National nonprofit Good Sports, which seeks to offer kids the benefits of sport and physical activity by providing equipment, apparel and footwear, has tapped ABC and ESPN commentator Jesse Palmer to serve as its national spokesperson. The former NFL quarterback will work with the organization to drive awareness about their mission and address the decline in youth sports participation across the country.

STATS is undergoing a facelift, announcing a new brand identity designed to showcase its "global presence and future growth in sports data and technology." The move STATS unify its portfolio under the new STATS brand – STATS, TVTI, and Prozone Sports  complete with a redesign of the company’s logo and refined core principles and values for all STATS employees across the globe. The Topps Company announced that on-demand platform TOPPS NOW surpassed 300,000 cards sold thus far, "exceeding the expectations of the program and helping to re-engage thousands of fans." To date almost 500 moments have been highlighted with cards, ranging from Ichiro Suzuki’s 3,000th hit, to rookie appearances, no-hitters, catches and battles on the diamond, all of which are available same day for fans and are delivered via mail in 3-5 business days.

Boston University is teaming with Campus Insiders to live-stream 32 men’s and women’s ice hockey home contests during the 2016-17 season. BU is the only Division I school in the nation to have both its men’s and women’s ice hockey programs make two NCAA title game appearances over the past decade. "It’s been great to work with Boston University through our Patriot League partnership and Campus Insiders is thrilled to be able to now feature BU hockey," said Adam Anshell, Vice President, Networks and Live Events for Campus Insiders. ESPORTS

Another day, another sports powerhouse getting into the eSports scene, this time with the announcement that Team Liquid was selling controlling interest in their team to an ownership group led Peter Guber and Ted Leonsis (along with Magic Johnson). Steve Arhancet and Victor Goossens will continue in their respective roles as Co-CEOs of Team Liquid. Guber and Leonsis will serve as Co-Executive Chairmen of their new eSports ownership group aXiomatic. In a post announcing the transaction, Goossens stated that "When we started looking for investment early last year, we had many different options from multiple minority investments to a majority investment. Throughout this long process I have really gotten to know Bruce and Peter as intelligent and trusting partners and they have put together a phenomenal investment group to invest alongside them including Ted Leonsis whose background is a perfect mix of sports, technology, and innovation."

ELeague announced plans for a CS: GO major that will be held from Jan. 22-29 at Fox Theater in Atlanta The Grand Final will be carried live on TBS with a simulcast on Twitch with the ELeague Major serving as the tenth Major Championship in the history of CS:GO and one of only a few majors held each year. "When we launched ELEAGUE, we set out to deliver a best-in-class experience for esports teams, players and fans and we’re grateful to the entire community for their ongoing support and engagement with our content," said Lenny Daniels, President of Turner Sports. "Less than one year since ELEAGUE’s debut, we’re thrilled to host the next CS:GO Major Championship and we will utilize all of our collective resources to help further elevate this prestigious event."

ESL locked in a deal with MTG and the M7 Group, one of Europe’s largest satellite and IPTV operators that will see its 24/7 eSportsTV channel become available on a slate of new satellite TV platforms across Europe. Outlets include the Netherlands (Canal Digitaal), Belgium (TV Vlaanderen), as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia (Skylink).
