Good morning. It’s Wednesday September 23, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Sports Group is turning to Jennifer Storms to serve as the new Chief Marketing Officer for NBC Sports Group and heir for the transitioning John Miller. The former PepsiCo exec will oversee all marketing for NBC Sports Group assets starting Oct. 1, which include NBC Sports, NBCSN, Golf Channel, the 10 NBC Sports Regional Networks, NBC Sports Radio and NBC Sports Digital. She will also take on The NBC Sports Agency, which uses NBC Sports Group marketing resources to produce campaigns for group partners. Meanwhile, current CMO Miller announced his personal decision to transition his role last week and will now focus solely on the Olympics, handling efforts for Rio and co-lead for Pyeongchang. He will also continue as Chair of NBCUniversal’s Marketing Council.

“Jenny is a dynamic marketer who has the ability to lead teams creatively and strategically, and has important relationships with leagues, teams and athletes,” said Lazarus. “With John’s extended transition and the addition of Jenny, we are well-positioned to continue our momentum, marketing and promoting our biggest events.”

ON THE AIR

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association is taking big air to new heights, announcing a deal with Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Fenway Sports Management to have Fenway Park play host to a U.S. Grand Prix tour event on Feb. 11-12, 2016. “Big Air at Fenway” will feature a 140-foot high snow ramp and showcased on NBCSN, with men’s and women’s snowboarding events on Feb. 11 and men’s and women’s freeskiing events on Feb. 12, while NBC will offer a highlight show on the following day. “Big Air at Fenway will be one of the largest events in the 20-year history of the U.S. Grand Prix,” said USSA Chief Marketing Officer Michael Jaquet. “It will draw some of the most talented athletes in big air, including a brilliant group of Olympians and Olympic hopefuls. It will be a great show for spectators at Fenway Park and watching at home.”

Jessi Losada is heading to FOX Deportes where he will serve as its play-by-play announcer for NFL and college football contests and blow-by-blow announcer for Premier Boxing Champions. Losada joins the company from Telemundo, where he hosted a variety of shows including Titulares Telemundo and Boxeo Telemundo. He served as anchor for the first U.S. Spanish-language telecast of the Olympic Summer Games in Athens in 2004 and later covered Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012. He also called the first NBA game in Spanish in 2002 and the first NFL game in Spanish in 2010.

Two weeks before the new NHL regular season, NHL Network unveiled its talent roster for its three signature studio programs, NHL Live Powered By Constellation, NHL Tonight and On The Fly. The lineup includes E.J. Hradek, Kevin Weekes, Scott Stevens, John MacLean, Dave Reid, Mike Rupp, Neil Smith, John Tortorella, as well as Martin Biron, Brian Boucher, and Mike Johnson. Meanwhile, NHL Tonight will now be hosted by former NESN anchor Jamison Coyle and former NHL.com and CBS Sports Radio voice Tony Luftman, while On The Fly will be hosted by former Fox Sports North host and reporter Jamie Hersch.

ESPN is reportedly looking to cut nearly 300 employees before the end of the year, according to The Big Lead as part of a cost-cutting shift. The report also states that the company will be making midday changes to SportsCenter next month, cutting the Monday-Friday 1-3p show in half and scrubbing the 3-6p show “with an anchor providing live updates on breaking news.”

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will host an upcoming Nickelodeon docu-series dubbed I Wanna Be (Working Title). The series will follow Newton “as he takes real kids on the ride of their lives to help make their dreams come true” with 20-episodes set to run in 2016.

International Speedway Corporation locked in its fourth Founding Partner, inking a deal with Sunoco for a multi-year partnership that makes the brand part of its $400 million DAYTONA Rising redevelopment project. The agreement hands Sunoco naming rights for one of five fan injectors, the new and redesigned entry statement that includes over 20,000 square feet of Sunoco engagement and fan experiences that vertically span four concourse levels. In addition, the company lands branding rights for one of the fan “neighborhoods” located near its injector.

Learfield Sports picked up KP Sports and Entertainment for its growing portfolio. All of the employees of KP Sports’ multimedia rights business will now be employees of Learfield and current agreement will now operate under the Learfield Sports banner. ROSTER MOVES

Long-running WTA CEO Stacey Allaster is stepping down for personal reasons, effective Oct. 2. Allaster joined the WTA in January 2006 as its president and in July 2009 was promoted to chair and CEO and saw the WTA lock in one billion dollars in diversified contracted revenues during her tenure. "It’s been a privilege to lead the organization that Billie Jean King founded and to have worked with the world’s best female athletes, dedicated tournament promoters and passionate and professional WTA team members. For 25 years I have dedicated my professional life to the sport and I’m proud of the work I leave behind," Allaster said. "But the recent loss of my brother-in-law and the ATP’s CEO, Brad Drewett, has provided a personal wake-up call about life, family and priorities and it is time for me to shift some time and energy that way." The organization announced that the process to hire a new CEO is underway.

THE MAIN EVENT
