FOX Sports’ decision to pair a split-national MLS broadcast with an NFL game paid dividends, as the broadcast channel scored 1,298,000 viewers for its MLS presentations on Sunday, making it the most-watched MLS telecast of any kind and on any network in 12 years. The lineup of simultaneous MLS and NFL games marked the first time in the MLS’s 21 seasons that a network partner televised games from two leagues on the same network at the same time.
Sarah Spain is a keeper for ESPN, which signed the ESPN host and espnW writer to a multiyear extension. The deal sees Spain continue in her role as a featured reporter and columnist for espnW on multiple ESPN platforms as well as co-host a new national weeknight ESPN Radio show with Israel Gutierrez, entitled Izzy and Spain and launching Monday at 9p, among other outlets.
MNF took a dip in week two as the Eagles bested the Bears, although ESPN still won the night among all networks in households, viewers and all key male and adult demos. The matchup was down from last year, delivering 12,173,000 average viewers on TV on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, with ESPN’s coverage averaging a 7.3 household score.
Bounce TV’s first Premier Boxing Champions – The Next Round from Las Vegas was a boon for the channel on Friday. The card’s two airings that night combined to reach 1.3 million viewers for the channel. Male viewing was up by 19% in Men 25-54 and 10% in M18-49 versus the previous PBC on Bounce event in June.
ESPN announced plans to honor the great Dodgers baseball announcer Vin Scully on tonight’s edition of Wednesday Night Baseball presented by Hankook Tire, which pits the Giants/Dodgers at 10p. Jon Sciambi will provide play-by-play with analysts Rick Sutcliffe and Doug Glanville for the full national telecast. Meanwhile, Scully’s call on SportsNet LA of the entire fourth inning will be played live on ESPN while vignettes showcasing some of Scully’s most memorable calls will be featured throughout.
Meanwhile, ESPN also announced that it was on the prowl for new US cities to host the X Games summer event for two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020. In July, the company announced that is would depart Austin for Minneapolis as host city for 2017 and 2018.

As NBC Sports gets ready for the Ryder Cup, Golf Channel and NBC are launching a new ad campaign dubbed “Playing Through,” in which the company is partnering with advertisers to offer a percentage of the event’s commercial breaks without fans having to miss any of the action. The company will leverage a split screen graphic while the spot runs on the right side of the screen with full sound while Ryder Cup coverage continues on the left.
Bad Boy Off Road signed on as the title sponsor at New Hampshire Motor Speedway’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday. “Bad Boy Off Road vehicles are designed and built to be driven by the bold, and there’s no one bolder than the drivers who compete on NASCAR’s highest and most fierce level of competition,” said John Collins, Vice President, Consumer for Textron Specialized Vehicles. “We’re proud to have our brand associated with a premier event at one of NASCAR’s most popular and toughest tracks.” The Bad Boy Off Road 300 will air live nationally at 2p on NBCSN.
Mattress Firm signed three-time World Champion Simone Biles to a multi-year partnership designed to drive awareness of the retailer’s national Mattress Firm Foster Kids program and help promote the importance of sleep, particularly for children. Biles will work closely with Mattress Firm to promote the initiative, including volunteering her time with Mattress Firm and Ticket to Dream’s Houston nonprofit partners, supporting the six annual donation drives, and sharing her personal foster care experience as an advocate of the Mattress Firm Foster Kids program.
WatchESPN is now available on the PlayStation 4 console, offering complete app accessibility across all major streaming devices. The app will also offer authenticated subscribers live streaming access to the ESPN networks as well as short-form video clips accessible to all users. In addition, WatchESPN access will be coming soon to the PS3 system.
Sky is betting on eSports audience growth, investing $2 million in Ginx TV, parent company of the 24-hour eSports TV channel GINX eSports TV. That equates to a 16.5% stake in the company, with Sky now joining ITV as backers of the channel. Both ITV and SKY have the option to pick up further holdings in Ginx TV, according to Reuters. “We’re really excited to have followed up our commercial partnership with Ginx with this investment, which will help us deepen our understanding of eSports and its audience,” said Emma Lloyd, group director of business development and strategic partnerships at Sky. “At Sky we are committed to bringing new programs and channels such as GINX eSports TV to support and extend our leadership position in content.”
MOBA Legends is coming to eSports courtesy of a partnership between Kick9 and ESL. The duo will host 19 tournaments this year with over $20,000 worth of prizes including an all-expenses paid trip to China to compete in the world championship where teams will compete for an additional $30,000 worth of prizes. “All of us at Kick9 are super excited to be breaking MOBA Legends into eSports with ESL,” said Chris Castagnetto of Kick9. “We’re happy to be providing players with the opportunity to compete at a professional level for the chance to receive cash, fame and other great prizes and who better to do it with than ESL.”
UFC named Mick Maynard as Vice President of Talent Relations for the promotion. Maynard had served as president and owner of Houston-based Legacy Fighting Championship. He will now work alongside Sean Shelby, who is being promoted to Senior Vice President of Talent Relations, in organizing UFC bouts, developing athletes on the roster, and scouting potential UFC talent.
AEG Global Partnerships added Mike Lee as Director of Digital for the company where he will be responsible for driving agency growth and sponsorship opportunities through the integration of AEG’s rapidly expanding digital capabilities. He will directly oversee the execution of the department’s strategic social media initiatives, including viral marketing campaigns, social channels, and user-generated content.
