CYNOPSISSPORTS
09.21.15

Good morning. It’s Monday September 21, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The Albert-family pedigree continues to be on full display with the start of the NFL season, as FOX Sports stalwart Kenny Albert returned for another season calling games for the network. Albert, of course, recently added PBC boxing to his portfolio via NBC, joining sports that currently include the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA, along with past runs that range from NFL Europe to college football, basketball and even wrestling (which he calls his most challenging gig).

With media evolving and the demand for versatile talent at a premium, Cynopsis Sports chatted with Albert about life in the broadcast booth, changes to production and how venues impact calling a game.

Albert on the evolution of the sports industry: I’m very fortunate to be involved in all four of the major sports, between football and baseball at FOX, hockey at NBC and a little bit of basketball fill-in at MSG as well. The industry continues to evolve, and with the NFL for example, you look at the ratings every year and think, how could they possibly get any higher? But they do. The interest in NFL football and the amount of people who watch the games every week is mind-boggling and social media has contributed to that as well.

On adding boxing to his resume: The PBC has been a lot of fun. Boxing is a sport that I hadn’t been involved in obviously as much as the others. I had done a bunch of shows through the years but getting to work with Sugar Ray Leonard, DJ Flores and Kenny Rice is so much different than everything else I’ve been involved in. There is no ball or puck, so a lot of it is storytelling, meeting the fighters the day before and getting their stories out there. Clearly, it’s a little different than calling a football or hockey game, but I enjoy the challenge of it and really enjoy the television aspect of the sport.

On preparation: You really have to be organized. I learned growing up around a father and two uncles, who were heavily involved in sports, that preparation was the number one factor. That was the thing that was ingrained in me but it does get challenging during the busier portions of the year. For example, in October, I always have the football/hockey overlap with some basketball thrown in there as well and there could be some baseball thrown in as well. There was a span a few years ago when I was involved in all four sports over a four-day stretch. I’ve had two in one day. In April, during the hockey playoffs, I might have ten or eleven days in a row with a game. I think organization is the key and right now, with the schedules released, I could pretty much tell you where I’m going to be every day for the next eight months.

On the rise of data: I’ve always been a big numbers and stats guy but I think you really have to filter it. You have to keep in mind that the game is the most important thing. People are tuning in to see the same, to hear about the players and the strategy and the numbers are certainly a part of it. The NFL was really ahead of its time with the number that the coaches use. I remember meeting with teams 15-20 years ago and coaches would talk about looking at every third down and six play that a certain team ran over the last three years, etc. Now, with the numbers getting out there in the mainstream media, I think there is certainly a place for it but you don’t want to bog down the broadcast with too many numbers.

On game-changing production elements: I still feel that the FOXBox, which David Hill brought in in ’94 with the score and time graphic in the upper left-hand corner, might be the single most important technological element in sports television. It is hard to fathom now to turn on a game and not see the score, but prior to ’94, that just wasn’t there. There were other networks in the 90s who did not take to it right away because they felt that if somebody tuned in and saw that it as a blowout, they would turn it off and it would hurt the rating. But now, when you watch some of the older games on ESPN Classic or other networks that carry them, it feels strange to look at it and not see the score.

On favorite venues to call a game: For me, I love some of the old, traditional stadiums and ballparks such as Wrigley and Fenway, as well as Lambeau Field in football. In hockey, even though they are newer buildings, Montreal and Chicago are tremendous atmospheres as well. Of course, I have always been partial to Madison Square Garden. But to me, there are certain things I look for to make my job easier as the location of the broadcast booth certainly comes into play. I remember back in the day at Sun Devil Stadium where the Cardinals used to play, it was so high up that the players looked like ants in the field. The Liberty Bowl was another one that was really high. Fortunately, a lot of the new stadiums have made it easier, I was in St. Louis this past week and the booths are in a really good spot. The Ravens and Redskins also have two of the better ones.

ON THE AIR

Thursday Night Football continues to bolster NFL ratings trends as CBS and NFL Network’s season debut of TNF ranked as the most-watched and highest-rated ever for the franchise, according to Nielsen Live + Same Day fast national numbers. The Broncos victory averaged 21.117 million viewers for the simulcast, up 2% over last year debut, with an average national household rating/share of 12.9/24, also up 2%.

In college football, ESPN/ABC carried the two highest-rated games of the day on Saturday, anchored by Ole Miss/Alabama on ESPN with a 4.6 overnight Nielsen score. That was up 254% over the 2014 comparable window on the channel and also became WatchESPN’s most-streamed college football game of the week with an average minute audience of 128,000 users, 615,000 unique viewers and 35,700,000 live minutes viewed. Meanwhile, ABC’s Northern Illinois/Ohio State or Nebraska/Miami notched a 3.6 rating, while Stanford/USC scored a 2.7. Meanwhile, Firday night/s Florida State/ Boston College contest handed ESPN with a 2.3.

Around the dial, NBC’s Georgia Tech/Notre Dame matchup earned a 2.59 in metered market overnights, to score as the channel’s highest rated Notre Dame Football first afternoon game of the season since 2008. Top markets: Atlanta (7.31); Greenville (5.80); Indianapolis (5.53), Las Vegas (4.56) and Ft. Myers (4.42.)

Wrapping up today’s college football roundup, BTN unveiled its game selections for week four on Sept. 26. The noon window will see Central Michigan/Michigan State, Kansas/Rutgers and Bowling Green/Purdue. At 3:30p, the network will carry San Diego State/Penn State and Ohio/Minnesota. Primetime at 8p will see Hawaii/Wisconsin and Ball State/Northwestern.

Save the date! The Cynopsis Sports Engagement Summit will be ready to rumble on Dec. 2 in NY. All prime-time regular season games, playoff games, and the Super Bowl will be carried across the TSN Radio network of stations plus select Bell Media Radio stations.

The BBC and the All England Club inked a new three-year extension to their current deal for rights to broadcast The Championships, Wimbledon, from 2018 to 2020. The Championships will continue to be played out across BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Red Button and the BBC Sport website with live radio coverage rights also extended on Radio 5 live.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

A new sponsor is parking at Daytona, with BRP inking a deal to serve as the title sponsor for the 150-mile qualifying races for NASCAR’s Daytona 500 which will now be known as the Can-Am Duel At Daytona. Next year’s event will take place on Feb. 18 as drivers vie for a starting spot in “The Great American Race.”

Elsewhere in NASCAR, Aspen Dental Management extended its partnership with Danica Patrick and Stewart Haas Racing and will now double the number of races in which Aspen Dental serves as primary sponsor for her team. Patrick will be behind the wheel of the blue-and-white No. 10 Aspen Dental Chevrolet SS for four races annually beginning with the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, with associate sponsorship status for Patrick in all other Sprint Cup races.

With golf returning to the Olympics next year, BMW of North America locked in a deal to add the USA Golf Federation to its roster of National Governing Body partners. Deal points will include mobility services including transportation assistance to the USA GOLF Federation leading up to and during the Rio 2016 Games. “As a global supporter of professional and amateur golf for more than 30 years, it was a natural fit for BMW to support USA GOLF in the sport’s return to the Olympics in 2016,” said Trudy Hardy, Vice President of Marketing, BMW of North America. “With this partnership and golf’s inclusion in the Olympics for the first time in 112 years, BMW realizes a powerful opportunity to aid in raising the profile of the sport with new audiences across the globe. We are excited for a spirited competition in Rio and wish the best of luck to the USA GOLF athletes in their quest to bring home a medal.”

The PBR is going pink to support the fight against breast cancer, launching a campaign that will include donations, survivor celebrations and awareness activities. This year, the PBR will use its Road to Vegas and the 2015 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals as a platform for Breast Cancer Research Foundation via its PBR Pink Promise campaign. Designated events will feature a BootDaddy.com Breast Cancer Bounty Bull and carry a bonus of $5,000 while PBR staff, stock contractors, the Dickies Bullfighters, entertainer Flint Rasmussen and PBR bull riders will be wearing pink on each Friday night in celebration of the cause. Fans will also be able to make donations to the BCRF online at
www.pbr.com/PBRgoesPink which the organization will match. Other activations will include turning the las Vegas tall High Roller Observation Wheel pink on Oct. 22 at the PBR World Finals, along with activities around the city.

FANTASY/GAMING/ESPORTS

CBS Sports’ Clark Kellogg is the latest name to be added to videogame franchise NBA 2K16. According to CSE, Kellogg will join previously reported talent for the game that will include Ernie Johnson, Jr., Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal. This year’s edition will include the all-new MyCAREER experience, aka ‘Livin’ Da Dream’ written and directed by Spike Lee. The game features on-court analysis by commentators Johnson and Kellogg.

Pac-12 Conference Commissioner Larry Scott is putting the kibosh on potential collegiate sports-driven fantasy sports ads on the Pac-12 Networks, according to USA Today. Despite the volume of money being used to promote play around the dial, Scott said that “The federal government has determined, for the moment, that it’s not gambling,” adding, “But the NCAA has taken a position that we can set the rules and we don’t support it. So that’s where we’ve drawn the line.”

THE MAIN EVENT

Jets/Colts on MNF on ESPN at 8:30p.
