Good morning. It’s Monday September 18, 2017 and this is your your first early morning Digital briefing!

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

RISC: A Reduced Instruction Set Computer is a type of microprocessor that recognizes only a limited number of instructions, the opposite of the standard PC. Set-top boxes and other interactive TV-related hardware use RISC’s.

JUST IN

In what must be a welcome respite for Facebook, it’s Apple’s turn to be on the digital hot seat within the marketing community. Just about every advertising and media trade group signed on to a letter released this week in which the powers that be blasted Apple for its plan to block cookies in the Safari browser. The trade groups – including the Association of National Advertisers, the 4A’s and the Interactive Advertising Bureau – say Apple’s move would “sabotage” the current economic model of the Internet.

Music video site Vevo fell victim to OurMine, an infamous hacker group. Thehackers temporarily posted over three terabytes of internal documents and video content online. As first reported by Gizmodo, the posts included marketing info, social media documents, videos, a group ofdocuments labeled “premieres,” and other internal files. Vevo confirmed theattack, saying it resulted from a phishing scam on LinkedIn. OurMine later tookthe posts down, simply saying that it was responding to a request from Vevo.

Auto-play videos with sound can be quite annoying, particularly to Google. In a blog post this week, the company said its Chrome web browser will start blocking auto-play video ads with sound by default, beginning in January. Chrome will automatically block videos ads unless the audio is muted, or it includes no audio at all. If the user tapped or clicked somewhere on the site during the browser session the video will be enabled. One line of thought is that given its dependency on ad revenue, Google is making the move to help curtail the use of ad-blocking technology by consumers.

PROGRAMMING

Former Advertising Age and New York Post reporter Claire Atkinson will helm a new vertical digital channel at NBC News devoted to covering the media industry. The as-yet unnamed offering will focus on things like how content is distributed and the effects the current political scene has on how consumers get their information…. In a related move, NowThis announced the launch of a new Twitter channel specifically designated to breaking news. Called @newsroom, it will bring audiences immediate coverage of breaking events and offer real-time fact checks to help people stay better informed.

In new 6-part digital series Training Spaces, TLC’s Trading Spaces experts put new designers and carpenters to the test with “boot camp” challenges that prove them worthy of joining the team, and also introduce them to viewers. The series, presented by Lowe’s, will be released on TLC Go Spring 2018.

The VAB is citing research from the likes of Nielsen, SNL Kagan and TiVo. It its most recent prediction, eMarketer forecast that 22.2 million U.S. adults will have cut the cord by year-end, up 33% from 2016, and ahead of a previous, end-of-2017 estimate of 15.4 million.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Time magazine has chosen Digital Editor Edward Felsenthal as its new Editor-in-Chief. He succeeds Nancy Gibbs, who will remain as Editorial Director of the company’s news group until the end of the year.

Former Oriental DreamWorks Chief Creative Officer Melissa Cobb is joining Netflix to lead its kids and family content team. Her title will be VP of Kids and Family, reporting to Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.
