In a shift from lifestyle and entertainment content to harder weather news and digital, The Weather Channel is canceling morning shows AMHQ and Wake Up With Al. AMHQ anchor Sam Champion will focus on primetime weather reporting and host on-screen segments as the company launches its “Local Now” product for OTT providers; Al Roker will make appearances during New York weather events and work on on digital projects. Said the company, “In a fragmented world where it’s no longer about scale but about a passionate core following, we recognize the need to be hyper-focused on providing our viewers exactly what they come to us for – weather.” About 50 of the company’s 1400 employees are expected to leave in the reorg, according to CNN Money.
GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has suggested CNN donate profits from its broadcast of the second Republican debate to veterans groups. In an open letter to CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker, Trump said that, “While I refuse to brag…this tremendous increase in viewer interest and advertising is due 100% to ‘Donald J. Trump.’ … you should view the second debate as a public service and not accept the massive profits that this airing will generate.” Reports have CNN asking for upwards of $200,000 for a 30-second spot. CNN moved its broadcast of the Wednesday, September 16 event from 9p EST to 8p, pushing it closer to the 6-7:45p time allotted for the party’s second-tier candidates debate.
On a lighter note, Donald Trump will phone it in, literally, on ABC daytime talker The View today. The GOP candidate’s call-in should provide fodder for new CBS’s Late Show host Stephen Colbert, who will be hosting Vice President Joe Biden tonight.
