Good morning. It’s Thursday September 3, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBC Sports Digital is redesigning NBCSports.com for “a clean, streamlined experience that improves the prominence of live and short-form video as well as player news.” The overhaul will be unveiled on Monday, featuring a live streaming schedule that will be displayed site-wide for easier access by fans while a “Watch Now” feature in the schedule will indicate events that are currently live, and display upcoming events up to 72 hours in advance. The re-designed site will also spotlight short-form, on-demand video content in specially curated categories, including clips from NBC Sports Group’s properties; original programming such as The Men in Blazers Show and Mobsteel; NBC Sports Films content; and NBC Sports and Yahoo Sports’ Mad Dash. On the fantasy side, the site will now make Rotoworld’s up-to-date player news more easily accessible as well.

“NBCSports.com was re-designed with the single purpose of providing sports fans with easier access to the content that distinguishes NBCSports.com from other sports sites  live video and player news,” said Rick Cordella, SVP & GM, Digital Media, NBC Sports Group. “From the more intuitive NBC Sports Live Extra elements to player news integration and an adaptable layout for multiple devices, NBCSports.com will be more equipped to serve an increasingly mobile sports fan.”

ON THE AIR

IMG is launching College Football Blitz, described as a Red Zone-esque live and on-demand audio platform that will offer fans live “cut-in” coverage to top college football games all day Saturday. The slate begins Sept. 5 and will run through the end of the season, produced and distributed by IMG Audio, broadcasting ten hours of play-by-play cut-ins, highlights, exclusive coaches’ interviews, and more. Local university IMG broadcast teams will contribute coverage in a whip-around format for nearly three quarters of Power 5 college football games on Saturdays from 2p-midnight.  College Football Blitz will be offered on a special game-day only channel on TuneIn Radio, as well as on SiriusXM (app, webstream and on satellite channels as scheduling allows), CBS Interactive’s “College Sports Live,” and on IMGCollege.com 

With the Verizon IndyCar series wrapped up, NBC Sports reports that the 2015 season on NBCSN marked the most-watched year ever for the sport on the channel. Races averaged 507,000 viewers for the network, with coverage of its 11 races up 34% over the network’s average viewership for the 2014 season. Sunday’s season finale at Sonoma averaged 841,000 viewers to become the most-watched IndyCar race on NBCSN since rights were acquired in 2009, and the most-watched IndyCar race on cable in seven years.

ESPN locked in an extension with the Valero Alamo Bowl with a 10-year extension that launches in December 2016 and includes rights to the annual college football postseason game across ESPN’s platforms through 2025.

Tuesday night’s fourth episode debut of Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Houston Texans continued to pack a punch for HBO, nailing its most-watched episode premier since 2012. The ep scored 933,000 viewers, with premiere telecasts this season delivering an average of 870,000 viewers, 30% higher than the average of the first four episodes from the 2014 series in Atlanta.

NBC Sports is reeling in 11 NFL players will join Carrie Underwood for her performance of “Waiting All Day for Sunday Night,” the opening theme for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Carrie will visit with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Sept. 10 with a sneak peek of the opening theme and will also perform her new single “Smoke Break.” Athletes are set to include the likes of Odell Beckham, Jr., Dez Bryant, Kam Chancellor, Colin Kaepernick, Andrew Luck, Clay Matthews, DeMarco Murray, Patrick Peterson, DeMarcus Ware, J.J. Watt and Russell Wilson.

BTN’s Scarlet and Gray Days: Inside Ohio State Training Camp became the channel’s highest-rated August original programming in history, according to Nielsen metered market numbers. The premiere on Aug. 19 set the BTN record, but was bested by the second episode on Aug. 26.

Nicktoons is set to boost its NickSports slate with second seasons of NFL RUSH and NASCAR Hammer Down, premiering Wednesday, Sept. 9, and Sept. 30, respectively. Both shows will run during the NET’S sports-themed programming TV block and air regularly on Wednesdays from 9-11p.

Grande Communications is bringing MLB Network to the plate as part of the Premier Pak package on HD channel 922 and SD channel 133. In addition, MLB Network Strike Zone will become available to Grande customers on the Ultra Sports Tier package on channel 923. “We are thrilled to bring MLB Network and MLB Network Strike Zone to Grande customers, especially as the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers compete in the 2015 pennant races,” said Rob McGlarry, president of MLB Network. “This partnership is in line with our goal to make MLB Network available as widely as possible, and Grande customers will now have the opportunity to receive the only network on television committed to covering baseball 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

CBS Sports Network will bring back We Need to Talk to a new time, with the show slated to run on Tuesday nights at 8p. Episodes debut on Sept. 8 and will run through Dec. 15, including a special edition of the show that will run on CBS on Nov. 21 at 2p. Tuesday’s Fall debut of the show features panelists Tracy Wolfson, Amy Trask, Laila Ali and Dara Torres.

NBA TV is carrying 10 live games from the FIBA Americas Championship and EuroBasket 2015 international tournaments. Coverage will start with four second round games from the FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico City from Sept. 6-9 while EuroBasket game coverage begins with two quarterfinal games on Sept. 15, and Sept. 16, beginning at 12:30p.

FOX Sports delivers its 200th soccer match from its Summer of Soccer on Friday with the U.S. Men’s National Team playing Peru. Since Memorial Day, over 70 million viewers have tuned in to FOX Sports channels, including FOX broadcast network, FS1, FS2 and FOX Deportes for Summer of Soccer events from FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015, CONCACAF Gold Cup, UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga, FA Cup, MLS, NWSL, Guinness International Champions Cup, FIFA U-20 World Cup 2015, USWNT and USMNT friendlies and more, according to the network.
 
Starz ordered for a third season of Survivor’s Remorse, from executive producers Tom Werner, Maverick Carter, LeBron James, Mike O’Malley, Paul Wachter and Vic Levin. O’Malley has signed on again to serve as executive producer and showrunner. “Survivor’s Remorse” made its sophomore season debut during the new STARZ Comedy Block on August 22 following the new half-hour scripted comedy series “Blunt Talk” starring Patrick Stewart.

ESPNU, SEC Network and Longhorn Network combine for more than 40 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer games this season, scheduling regular Thursday night and Sunday action, Texas home games, the ACC and American Championship games and full coverage of the SEC Tournament. The lineup includes five ranked teams, including Florida State/Virginia taking on Oct. 25.

NFL Network formally announced that America’s Game: 2014 Patriots will debut on Sept. 8 at 10p, two days ahead of the team’s kickoff for the regular season. The episode will include Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman and Devin McCourty telling the story of the 2014 Patriots teams in their own words. Additionally, the hour-long special features wired sound from the Patriots’ games throughout the season and footage from team practices in Arizona leading up to Super Bowl XLIX, offering an all-access look at the Super Bowl champions. Actor Chris Evans lends his voice to this year’s edition.

On the local front: Tuesday night’s Dodgers/Giants telecast marked the highest-rated (1.70 Household Rating) and most-watched telecast ever on SportsNet LA, notching 140, 000 Total Viewers. Since the addition of Charter, SportsNet LA is averaging a 1.13 Household Rating, marking an +81% uptick with an average of 84,493 Total Viewers, up 86%.

CSN Mid-Atlantic announced that Rob Carlin will co-host SportsTalk Live with Brian Mitchell, beginning Sept. 8. Current host Chick Hernandez will return to covering the Washington Redskins full time. Carlin will offer commentary, analysis and debate covering the top topics of the day.

Chicago’s Comcast SportsNet locked in former Bears linebacker/seven-time Pro Bowl star Lance Briggs to join the channel’s game day coverage as a studio analyst on Bears Pregame Live and Bears Postgame Live, beginning with the team’s 2015 NFL season opener on Sept. 13.

PRODUCTION TECH

CBS Sports is bringing in the Pylon Cam for select Thursday Night Football and NFL on CBS 2015 season broadcasts, noting that the company may also use the camera during the playoffs and Super Bowl 50. The network will use four custom-molded pylons with multiple cameras to film the goal lines and sidelines on each side of the field with high-resolution, high-definition, point-of-view cameras housed inside the pylon.

Sports Authority signed on to keep its entitlement of the Mountain West Football Championship Game, set to be played on Dec. 5, per the conference and its rights partner, Learfield Sports. Sports Authority will receive multiple opportunities for brand visibility including promotions of the game on various ESPN networks and a season-long digital campaign on the Mountain West Network. Additionally, the brand will gain exposure through radio and television commercials, in-venue and television-visible signage, field logos and logo positioning on helmet decals, first-down markers and merchandise.

The NHL and its official energy services partner, Constellation, are extending their environmental sustainability partnership via Kraft Hockeyville USA, the Sept. 29 preseason game between the Penguins/Lightning at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, Pa. The deal will see energy efficient LED lighting installed throughout the facility, including above the ice surface to reduce glare and improve game presentation and visibility for players. As a result of the upgrade, the arena is expected to reduce electricity consumption by more than 25% and avoid the creation of 336,836 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

The Pac-12 got some sweet news with Red Vines candy partnering up as an official sponsor for the 2015 Pac-12 Football Championship Game. The brand and will activate a weekly multi-platform “Sweet Moments” campaign to celebrate the top moments in the Pac-12 throughout the season. Beginning today, Pac-12 Networks will launch the Red Vines #SweetMoment franchise across linear, digital and social platforms and Pac-12 Networks host Mike Yam will reveal the #SweetMoment Play of the Week nominees each Saturday night on Pac-12 Final Score. “We are extremely excited to expand our partnership with Red Vines to be an official sponsor of the Pac-12 Football Championship Game,” Pac-12 Networks Executive Vice President of Sales Neil Davis said. “By activating the Sweet Moments campaign across linear, social and retail, Red Vines will help us elevate and celebrate the incredible performances of the talented student-athletes in the Pac-12 Conference.”

In addition, WWE will be “going gold” for the month of September to raise awareness for the cause and will donate $1.00 to the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation to benefit Connor’s Cure for every updated twitter profile picture that “goes gold” where users update their Twitter profile to show their support.

PHIT America and the Sports & Fitness Industry Association are introducing GO! Grants to promote active lifestyles, with benefits going to 156 school-based programs in 22 states and funded by leading sports & fitness brands. Designed to jumpstart increased physical activity in schools, increasing physical literacy skills, health and academic performance among students aged 5-12,” the program will offer assistance to schools that have requested financial help to improve their P.E. programs and school activity plans. CBS Interactive and IMG locked in a renewal of their agreement for the production and management of the official athletic sites of 25 of IMG’s partner universities. CBS Interactive Advanced Media, which produces more than 100 official athletic sites for collegiate athletic brands, will power the schools’ athletic sites."We are thrilled to renew our agreement with IMG and to continue to serve 25 of their partner schools," said David Katz, Vice President and General Manager of CBS Interactive Advanced Media. “We are committed to serving fans of IMG’s partner schools by putting their favorite team’s content at their fingertips across all screens.”

Streaming platform NBC Sports Live Extra surpassed 13 million mobile app downloads through September 1, according to the company. Through the month of August, NBC Sports Live Extra streamed events including NASCAR, Premier League, IndyCar, Formula One, Breeder’s Cup Challenge Series horse racing, and more.
