The Writers Strike is finally over. After 148 days of work stoppage, the leadership of the WGA West and the WGA East unanimously voted to end the strike at 12:01a PT on Wednesday. The tentative deal must be ratified by the union’s members, who will vote on it from October 2 to October 9. Terms of the new pact bars the use of AI for writing or rewriting literary material and forbids studios from enforcing writers to use it. However, writers can choose to use AI to aid their writing upon receiving consent for the same from studios. The deal also includes increased compensation for the writers and adds new minimum staffing requirements for TV writers’ rooms based on episode count.

Late-night TV is back. Bill Maher’s “Real Time” will be the first show to return this Friday, September 29 on HBO, while the net’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” will be back Sunday, October 1. New episodes of CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and NBC’s Late Night With Seth Myers” will debut on Monday, October 2. Last but not least, Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” returns Monday, October 16.

“Friends” co-creator Marta Kauffman, Paul McCrane (“ER”) and Paul Scheer (“The League”) are partnering with The Union Solidarity Coalition on a live fundraising event to benefit TV and film crew members who were financially affected by the recent work stoppage. “The Give Back-ular Spectacular” event will feature two hours of musical acts, stand-up comedians, and celebrity-performed sketches at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 25 at 6p. Jason Alexander, Jack Black, Lily Tomlin and Jeremy Allen White are already onboard.

NBC and Peacock announced the presenter lineup for the first-ever “People’s Choice Country Awards.” Brothers Osborne will present the Country Champion award to Grammy Award-winner Wynonnarh and, as previously announced, Blake Shelton will present the Country Icon award to Toby Keith. Additional presenters include Adam Doleac, Carly Pearce, Chris Young, Dustin Lynch, Gabby Barrett, Lady A and more. Hosted by Little Big Town, the event airs Thursday, September 28 at 8p.

Katy Perry is joining the “Peppa Pig” world. The pop singer will voice a new character, Ms. Leopard, and guest star ahead of the animated series’ 20th anniversary. Her performance is slated for the three-part “Peppa Pig Wedding Party Special,” premiering in spring 2024.

Joe Manganiello (“True Blood,” “Magic Mike”) will host “Deal or No Deal Island,” a spin on the beat the banker classic game show. The new show will see 13 players transported to the Banker’s private island, where they’ll compete for cash in a season-long immersive competition. Mangianello will guide contestants, leading the game play, relaying the banker’s offers, and helping them through their toughest decisions.

The Long Island Medium, Theresa Caputo, is embarking on a new series: “Theresa Caputo: Raising Spirits” on Lifetime. The 20-parter will follow Caputo as she explores the next phase of her personal life, balancing new family dynamics like divorce and becoming a grandmother, starting in 2024.

Netlix has ordered “Devil May Cry” from Studio Mir. The eight-episode anime series is based on the hit video game that centers on demon hunter Dante and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. The project hails from Adi Shanker ( “Castlevania.”

National Geographic announced a first-look deal with Muck Media for unscripted series and specials. It expands Muck’s relationship with the network, which already includes “Trafficked with Mariana Van Zeller.”

Dianne Wiest will not be returning for Season 3 of “Mayor of Kingstown,” according to Deadline. There had been rumblings about her departure from the Paramount+ drama series for months. Her exit is reportedly story-driven.

Spanish-language streaming service ViX has begun production on the sophomore season of “Mujeres Asesinas” in Mexico City. The show’s debut season ranked as the highest-rated ViX Original series. Season 2 will continue to share the stories of women from completely different backgrounds.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

“The Curse of Oak Island” makes its Season 11 debut on Tuesday, November 7 at 9p on The History Channel. Rick and Marty Lagina and their team are back with their boldest plans to solve the 228-year-old treasure mystery.

National Geographic bows “Science Fair: The Series” on Sunday, December 10. It’s a spinoff of the Sundance Festival Favorite and Emmy-winning feature documentary.

WORLD premieres Season 7 of “Stories from the Stage” on Monday, October 16. The storytelling series will feature a collection of Native American storytellers in honor of Native American Heritage Month.

Six-episode HBO Original drama “True Detective: Night Country” debuts Sunday, January 14 at 9p. The series stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives investigating the disappearance of eight men, who were operating the Tsalal Arctic Research Station, when they suddenly vanished without a trace.

Meanwhile, Max Original animated series “Scavengers Reign” premieres with three episodes on Thursday, October 19. An expansion of the 2016 animated short film “Scavengers,” it follows several groups of survivors as they attempt to navigate a way off this strange planet where the laws of physics as we know them do not apply.

COMING UP

Get ready for the fur to fly. Bravo’s two-part “The Real Housewives of Orange County” reunion airs Wednesday, October 4 and 11 at 8p. Andy Cohen will host, natch.

Prime Video and One Championship return to U.S. primetime with “ONE Fight Night 14: Stamp vs. Ham” on Friday, September 29 at 8p. Live from Singapore Indoor Stadium, the even features several of the world’s top female martial artists competing in three world title matches across three different disciplines.

In support of Native American Heritage Month, PBS will present a new slate of programming beginning in October. Among the highlights: Ken Burns’ “The American Buffalo” premieres on Monday, October 16, while Season 2 of Native America debuts on Tuesday, October 24.

Max Original animated short film “Peter & The Wolf” debuts Thursday, October 19. Based on the classic fairytale, the short film transforms Sergei Prokofiev’s symphony into a visually modern retelling of the story, featuring music and narration by Gavin Friday.

TECH TALK

Meta has launched AI chatbots for some celebrities and influencers. At the Meta Connect 2023 confab on Wednesday, the tech company announced that it had struck partnerships with Snoop Dogg, Charli D’Amelio, MrBest, Kendall Jenner, Tom Brady, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Paris Hilton to play and embody AI-powered chatbots that will have profiles on Facebook and Instagram. “This isn’t just gonna be about answering questions,” said Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “This is about entertainment and about helping you do things to connect with the people around you.”

STREAMING

Samsung TV Plus is expanding its slate of free, premium programming this month. New channels include “The Drew Barrymore Show,” “Rachael,” “Medium,” and “Pictionary.”

Max has launched CNN Max, a 24/7 streaming news offering available to users alongside expanded access to news content and CNN originals.

All episodes of “L-POP” are now streaming on Disney+. The Latin American Original series invites audiences to discover the genre of Korean pop music and introduces Andrea (Andra De Alba), a K-pop fan who decides to form her own cover dance group.

Mythical Entertainment’s linear channel, Mythical 24/7, debuted on Plex on Wednesday. It marks its fifth launch since premiering on The Roku Channel last March.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Former MLB all-star and Fox Sports analyst Alex Rodriguez is set to co-host “The Deal,” a new original podcast and video series, with Bloomberg Originals chief correspondent Jason Kelly. The program will explore stories, strategies and challenges behind some of the biggest business moves made by athletes, entertainers and executives across industries. Each podcast episode will have a video companion on Bloomberg Originals and Bloomberg TV.

WestJet, in partnership with the National Hockey League, announced it will serve as the official airline of the 2023 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic on Sunday, October 29. Returning to its city of origin in Edmonton, the event will be hosted at Commonwealth Stadium in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the outdoor NHL game.

GOING GLOBAL

CBC launched CBC COMEDY, a free 24/7 ad-supported streaming channel featuring CBC’s original comedy series, sketch shows and stand-up specials. The new channel is available at CBC Gem, and will launch on LG Channels, The Roku Channel and Samsung TV Plus later this fall.

Paramount+ expanded its global Korean originals slate. Three new series, “Dongjae, The Good or the Bastard,” “Dreaming of Cinde Fxxxing Rella,” and “Pyramid Game” will launch exclusively on the service in Canada, the U.S., U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

SVT (Swedish Television) ordered 52 episodes of “Super Brakan & Ice-Bella.” Produced by Nuttery Entertainment and Toonz Media Group, the 11-minute animated show is based on a successful book series and follows two homemade superhero siblings, who battle a dull adult work using their imagination.
