A bevy of high-profile events impacting the world of esports this weekend will span both coasts. The action is set to include ESL One New York as teams square off on Counter-Strike on Saturday and Sunday. Activating this year will be brands that include AT&T, DHL, Mountain Dew Amp Game Fuel, ASUS and MSI. In addition, ESL will offer activities that include: Race Against EliGE; the ESL Mobile Open presented by AT&T Season 2 Finals and the ESL Pop-Up shop. The physical store will house ESL and team merchandise with some special appearances and availabilities with both FaZe Clan (Thursday) and Team Liquid (Friday).
 
COMPETITION AND VENUES

 
ELEAGUE will, for the first time, feature competitive Mortal Kombat 11 as linear programming, setting up a TBS special for tomorrow night that will showcase the Mortal Kombat 11 Arena Grand Final pitting former ELEAGUE Champion Ryan “Dragon” Walker vs. George “GRR” Foulkes. ELEAGUE will also serve up the best matches and moments from its nationwide community competition held at Rooster Teeth Expo earlier this summer. ELEAGUE x MK 11 Arena at RTX Austin presented by AT&T Fiber will premiere at Midnight on the network (early Saturday morning).
 
Riot Games will offer fans watching the League of Legends 2019 World Championship a whole new way to experience the event with the League Pro View, now available to purchase for $15, allowing viewers to observe everything from a player’s exact mouse clicks to scoreboard tallies and beyond. Fans who buy the Worlds Pro View pass will also get access to VODs from the 2019 LCS, LEC, and LCK Summer Splits, 2019 Rift Rivals, and the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational.
 
Season one of the new Call of Duty competitive league will be capped at 12 teams for its inaugural season in 2020. Commissioner Johanna Faries confirmed to The Washington Post that there will be no more new teams added before next year. This means that the first season of the franchised Call of Duty league will feature teams in London, Paris, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Florida, Minnesota, New York, Seattle, Toronto, and two in Los Angeles.
 
Riot Games is blending its LMS and LST orgs to form a new league that will debut next year. The new entity will feature 10 teams, pulled from both LMS and LST, and featuring teams from throughout Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. “During the past several months, Garena and Riot Games have been evaluating the professional competitive ecosystem for League of Legends across Southeast Asia and the LMS region,” Riot said. “Our goal is to continue to increase the level of competition and create a more engaging experience for fans.”
 
The Arena of Valor International Championship 2019 will take place in Thailand this November, with 12 top Arena of Valor teams from around the world battling for a $500,000 prize pool. Teams will be decided by regional tournaments across nine divisions.
 
Collegiate StarLeague is adding Wizards of the Coast’s digital card game under its umbrella of collegiate esports leagues. For the first time, Magic: The Gathering Arena will be among CSL’s offerings with a scholarship prize pool of $50,000 up for grabs. Throughout the season, CSL will provide new content for all Magic: The Gathering Arena fans, including deep analysis of decks, match breakdowns, top player interviews and much more. All the action will be streamed live on the CSL Twitch channel. In weekly matches, teams of three will face off against others from their respective geographic region in best-of-three sets with standard-legal decks.
 
The end of the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series sees Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., parent company to IndyCar, focus on 2020 with esports on his mind, telling NBC Sports that as part of a partnership with Microsoft and Forza for their Bounty Hunter challenge, “700,000 downloads of the Forza 7 game occurred as part of this initiative, and the Forza team told us that given the link – that it was not a new introduction in terms of a game – it was the biggest number they saw for downloads in their experience in the space so far. That bodes well for us, I think.” He added that, “The last few months we’ve done a lot of work to decide what our strategy ought to look like for esport. We’re not going to get into that today, but you will see us stepping up and getting more into the esports space next year for sure.”
 
The Season 8 Rocket League World Championship is returning to Europe, with Psyonix announcing that the event will run December 13-15 in Madrid, Spain at the Palacio Vistalegre. More information, such as when tickets go live, will be revealed at a later date.
 
Meanwhile, the Season 8 Finals for the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Esports Championship Series are locked in at Esports Stadium Arlington. The FACEIT event will award $750,000 with play spanning Nov. 28-Dec. 1. Overall, eight teams will compete in the Finals, with four each from North America and Europe following the regular season of online matches. “We’re extremely excited to be returning to the Esports Stadium Arlington again for the ECS Finals. The Season 6 Finals were a huge success, and this year we want to give our North American fans a flawless competition,” said FACEIT co-founder and Chief Business Officer Michele Attisani. “The venue is in an awesome location. It’s on the doorstep of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers, creating a natural buzz of iconic competition and fan-focused atmosphere.”

For marketers, Fortnite is synonymous with esports, generating 17.5 million hours watched during the World Cup Finals. Recently, it’s esports hours watched have declined. This week, Stream Hatchet investigates how the game’s competitive tournament viewership has been affected in 2019. Here are the insights: 
  • Fortnite peaked with the World Cup: The Fortnite World Cup Finals had 6.44x more Hours Watched than the Champion Series: Season X Finals that took place last weekend.
  • Prize pools don’t always drive viewership: The Champion Series: Season X Finals awarded over $4 million during the 3-day final event – the second highest Fortnite prize pool in 2019 – but only generated 1 million more Hours Watched than ESL Katowice Royale with a $1.1 million prize pool.
  • Concentration on Twitch: Although earlier Fortnite events in 2019 were solely streamed on Twitch, the World Cup Finals saw diversity mainly split between Twitch and YouTube. But, with the more recent Champion Series: Season X Finals, eyeballs have gravitated back towards Twitch which may cause concern for influencers on other platforms.

Louis Vuitton is bringing its designer touch to Riot Games, announcing a collaboration that will see the French House take on the League of Legends World Championship with the creation of a “one-of-a-kind” Trophy Travel Case that will hold the Summoner’s Cup, the trophy awarded to the world champions. The bespoke trunk will feature both some traditional Louis Vuitton savoir-faire along with “cutting-edge, high-tech elements inspired by the League of Legends universe.” Louis Vuitton and Riot Games also will soon announce unique champion skins and a capsule collection designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director of Women’s collections, along with other League of Legend digital assets. “We are honored to have Louis Vuitton as an official partner with designs to impact the look, feel, and prestige of our most prominent League of Legends event”, says Naz Aletaha, Head of Global Esports Partnerships at Riot Games. “This is a historic partnership that speaks to the impact Riot Games and League of Legends has had on the industry over the past nine esports seasons.”
 
The Overwatch League released activation details for this weekend’s upcoming Overwatch League 2019 Grand Finals, taking place this weekend in front of a sold-out crowd at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday and livestreamed on Twitch in 190 countries and broadcast on ABC from 3–6p. Philadelphia native Questlove will serve as the in-arena DJ for the event during breaks in the action. Before the match begins, sponsors will serve up a slate of activations at the Overwatch League’s 2019 Grand Finals Fan Fest. Among the partnerships on display will be: Xfinity; Bud Light; Coca-Cola; Fanatics; Kellogg’s; State Farm; T-Mobile; Toyota; and Upper Deck. In addition, DJ Ghost will be the on-site DJ for the Overwatch League’s Fan Fest, which will also include a Rivalry Station and Prize Wheel. Fans will also have the chance to run out of a replica player entrance tunnel. In addition, DreamSeat and Tespa will be activating on-site at 2019 Fan Fest.

The special edition includes custom design and colorway of the Logitech G Pro Wireless mouse and Logitech G640 Mousepad in both white and black contrasting colorways. With a goal to collect 1 million signatures by the end of 2020, the will look to create a gaming ecosystem that welcomes all, regardless of their shape, size, color, gender, background, disability, or beliefs.

Upper Deck announced the global launch of Overwatch League High Series, a new update set that marks the second esports trading card product from Upper Deck that adds content from the league’s expansion teams, including 90 new rookies from across all 20 teams in the league. In celebration of Grand Finals and the new product launch, Upper Deck will be offering free sample packs and exclusive Grand Finals-themed digital content to all fans in attendance. “Everyone has been eagerly awaiting the release of the High Series,” said Bubby Johanson, Director of Game Development at Upper Deck. “Not only does it introduce cards for the eight new expansion teams, but it also debuts never-before-seen short-printed Star Rookies cards. We are excited to see these highly coveted rookie cards in the hands of Overwatch League fans.”
 
Reuters inked a new partnership with Esportz Network to carry gamer-centric text, audio and video packages. Through Reuters Connect, Reuters News Agency customers will now have access to Esportz Network’s professional coverage aimed at helping the most dedicated esports fans and competitors gain in-depth analysis “on every angle of professional gameplay, as well as regular in-studio audio and video updates and interviews covering esports game development, tournaments, scores, and industry drama.”
 
Twitch announced benefits for Twitch Prime subscribers attending TwitchCon this weekend. Perks include: a free $10 Food & Drink Voucher and $10 Loot Cave Voucher; an exclusive Quest; a special Streaming Schedule; the Ask Me Bar; and the ability to play Rocket League, PUBG Mobile, and World of Tanks.

NFL Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion Richard Sherman is the latest member of the athletic community to buy in to the esports industry, agreeing to a deal with Enthusiast Gaming Holdings Inc. to serve as a global ambassador and shareholder for the Company’s esports brand, Luminosity Gaming. Sherman will help support Enthusiast’s growth and success while partnering with the Luminosity brand in addition to attending Luminosity and Enthusiast Gaming live activations throughout the year, while challenging other NFL players to team play with the company’s Call of Duty team, which is based in Seattle. Sherman’s “player challenge” games will be streamed publicly across the Luminosity network. He will also contribute to building out the Company’s professional player roster, as Captain of Luminosity’s esports organization.
 
OverActive Media appears poised to shut down the Splyce brand as part of a restructuring within the company, according to Dexerto. The long-running esports team brand had been purchased by OAM in November of last year, with the company opting to focus on its Toronto themed brands.

The trio of Bryce Blum, Lauren Gaba Flanagan, and Christopher “MonteCristo” Mykles are teaming up to launch a new creative agency and consulting group dedicated to “helping clients navigate the landscape of esports and gaming” and titled Theorycraft. The company will target brands, professional teams, and investors who are looking to develop creative strategies to reach esports and gaming audiences.
 
Activision Blizzard tapped Dan Mazei to oversee its global communications for the company’s esports division, per THR, which includes the Overwatch League and Call of Duty leagues. Mazai previously served at Reebok, where he led the apparel company’s global PR, digital content and social media divisions.
