IN THE NEWS

Strike Update:An agreement in principle”. The Writers Guild of America and the AMPTP have been meeting daily since Wednesday trying to hammer out a deal to end the strike that began on May 2. “The WGA and the AMPTP met for bargaining on Saturday and will meet again on Sunday,” said the two sides in a statement late Saturday, after the studios made what they described as their “best and final offer.” By Sunday evening, the two sides had agreed to a deal. “We have reached a tentative agreement on a new 2023 MBA, which is to say an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language,” the WGA told its members in a release.

Shows and movies on Amazon Prime will include advertisements starting in early 2024. “We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers,” said the company, which will first roll out ads in the US, UK, Germany and Canada. An ad-free option will be available for an additional $2.99 per month for Prime members.

NBCUniversal has notified external production companies about enhanced requirements aimed at ensuring a healthy workplace environment on its reality shows. A note to the companies from Frances Berwick, Chairman, NBCUniversal Entertainment, reported by Deadline, requires mental health support for cast members after filming; alcohol training; increased visibility and communication; and confidentiality clauses that allow for the reporting of unlawful conduct. “We want to take the opportunity in collaboration with the production companies to continue to strengthen our approach,” wrote Berwick. “To that end, we have developed additional resources, policies and protocols that will further enhance the workplace environments on our third-party productions and will strengthen our oversight.”

With ABC considering postponing the premiere of the new season of “Dancing With the Stars” amid the writers’ and actors’ strikes, SAG-AFTRA issued a statement approving the participation of actors who choose to continue. “We support them in fulfilling their contractual obligations,” said the guild. “The majority of our members on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ had contractual obligations to the show prior to the strike. Many are under option agreements that require them to return to the show if the producer exercises their option which the producer has done.” The statement came after Matt Walsh (“Veep”), a WGA member, paused his participation after pressure from that union.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan defended the platform’s decision to suspend monetization of Russell Brand’s channel after multiple women accused him of sexual assault, allegations the comedian denies. “If creators have off-platform behavior, or there’s off-platform news that could be damaging to the broader creator ecosystem, you can be suspended from our monetization program,” says Mohan in a “CBS Mornings” interview coming out today. “We endeavor to apply those rules, equally across our entire creator ecosystem.”

Peacock has rescinded its season two order for “Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin,” despite the comedy’s success with viewers. Season one of the movie spinoff dropped back in November 2022, and production for a sophomore run hadn’t started before the strikes hit. With release schedules impacted and streaming strategies being reevaluated, “Bumper” joins Prime Video’s “Peripheral” and “A League of Their Own” among shows whose second seasons ended before they began.

Hulu is expected to drop a number of titles soon as their license agreements expire. Among the series to be yanked are “Arrested Development,” “Ally McBeal,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” “Hill Street Blues” and “The Practice.” Fox shows on the chopping block that got a last-minute reprieve included “MasterChef,” “Next Level Chef,” “Crime Scene Kitchen” and “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back,” among others.
