IN THE NEWS

The Miss USA pageant is back on broadcast television – with some updates. “We are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to present viewers with a modern and progressive approach to a 70-year-old tradition,” said President and CEO of the Miss USA & Teen USA Organization Laylah Rose. The CW is the new home of the annual pageant, taking place September 29 at 8p. Last year, the event aired on fyi and Hulu.

Several media companies have privately expressed “both the desire and willingness” to negotiate an agreement that adequately addresses writers’ issues, the Writers Guild told members on Friday. One executive said the WGA’s proposals would not affect their company’s bottom line and that “they recognized they must give more than usual to settle this negotiation,” said the WGA update, while “another said they needed a deal badly….On every single issue we are asking for we have had at least one legacy studio executive tell us they could accommodate us.”

Ryan Murphy started a $500k fund to aid his casts and crews amid strikes. The Ryan Murphy Productions Assistance Fund aims “to support the exceptional casts and committed crews” who have been impacted by the ongoing strikes. Murphy was among the showrunners who collectively contributed $1.7 million to the Entertainment Community Fund. “Every story we’ve woven, each character brought to life, and every set constructed carry with them an inimitable thread of collaboration,” he posted on social media. “As my colleagues face the challenges brought forth by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the imperative to support each other is even more pronounced.”

Greg Berlanti also started a $500k strike relief fund for staffers on his company’s shows. The showrunner – also among the contributors to the Entertainment Community Fund in May – wrote on September 8, “We will be doing our best to spread these funds amongst as many people as possible, so they will be in denominations of 500 to 1500 dollars.” Berlanti, whose deal with Warner Bros. TV has been suspended during the strike, said he will make additional donations of $150k to the fund and to the Motion Picture & Television Fund. He wrote, “I will be asking for that money to be earmarked for support staff and below-the-line workers. I implore other industry workers in a fortunate enough situation to give what they can to these organizations today.”

Jimmy Fallon apologized to his staff after reports of toxic workplace conduct surfaced. “It’s embarrassing and I feel so bad,” Fallon said on a staff Zoom call. “Sorry if I embarrassed you and your family and friends. I feel so bad I can’t even tell you. I want this show to be fun, it should be inclusive for everybody, it should be funny, it should be the best show, the best people.” Rolling Stone’s article “Chaos, Comedy, and ‘Crying Rooms’: Inside Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Tonight Show,’” published on September 7, cited 16 current and former staffers of the talker who said the host’s “erratic” behavior spoiled their “dream” of working there.

Reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley (“Chrisley Knows Best”), in prison for financial crimes, have had their sentences reduced. Todd’s sentence has been cut from 12 ½ years to 10, and Julie’s from 7 years to 5.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

A Burning Man docuseries is in production. The event made headlines this summer when thousands of festival-goers were stranded because of torrential rain and mud; “The Man Will Burn,” currently in the works from Double Agent, Noujaim Films and The Othrs, will tell the story of the festival, including archival footage from the last 30 years. Currently, no networks or streamers are attached to the project.

For Matt Rife, Netflix was a “Natural Selection.” The hour-long stand-up comedy special, which leaves “no topic untouched – from crystals to social media trolls – and no audience member spared,” is scheduled to premiere later this year. The special will be taped at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., on September 22 and 23, and is executive produced by the social media star and Christina Shams.

COMING UP

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever” debuts December 8 on Disney+. The animated is based on Jeff Kinney’s book series.

“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” premieres on Apple TV+ on November 17. The sci-fi drama starring Anna Sawai and Wyatt Russell will debut with two episodes, followed by a new episode released weekly on Fridays through January 12.

Wynonna Judd hosts “Christmas at the Opry” on NBC and Peacock on December 7. The two-hour special will present an array of Christmas favorites, holiday classics and hits, featuring performances in front of a live audience. The Grammy winner and activist will also receive the Country Champion Award at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards on September 28.

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion will reunite for a debut performance of their new single “Bongos” during the 2023 “VMAs” on Tuesday, September 12 at 8p.

STREAMING

Hulu + Live TV is offering a discounted rate of $49.99/month for new and eligible returning subscribers, amid the carriage dispute with Charter that has left Disney channels dark on Spectrum cable systems. Disney owns two-thirds of Hulu.

Byron Allen’s Local Now has partnered with Banijay Rights for six FAST channels. “Powered by Banijay” Entertainment FAST channels will be dedicated to “Deal or No Deal US,” “Fear Factor,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Wipeout Xtra,” “Love Quest” and “McLeod’s Daughters.” Through this partnership, Local Now viewers can stream these classics for free. “As a leading global distributor, we have an unrelenting commitment to quality,” said Shaun Keeble, VP of digital for Banijay Rights. “So we’re thrilled to enter this partnership with Local Now as we continue to attract new viewers to some of the leading IPs in the Banijay catalog.”

SPORTS

AXS TV announced a broadcast agreement with Major League Pickleball. The partnership will bring live coverage of the league’s 2023 Season 2 events to the network, beginning September 22 at 10a ET. AXS TV is slated to broadcast all three Season 2 tournaments, kicking off with live coverage of MLP Atlanta, followed by MLP Los Angeles and concluding with MLP SoCal. The media company subsidiary is also now the official music sponsor on site at the MLP 2023 events. Anthony Cicione, president of entertainment for Anthem, said, “Pickleball is growing at a tremendous pace and AXS TV is pleased to not only air the events on our channel, but be on site promoting music.”

CASTING

Reality show alum Phaedra Parks (“The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” “The Real Housewives: Ultimate Girls Trip”) has joined “Married to Medicine.” Season ten of the Bravo series following Atlanta-area medical professionals will also include returning cast members Dr. Jackie Walters, Dr. Simone Whitmore, Dr. Heavenly Kimes, Toya Bush Harris and Quad Webb.

GOING GLOBAL

A petition calling for the British government to provide “income replacement” for staff left without work due to the SAG-AFTRA had collected nearly 30,000 signatures by Saturday. “We continue our support for the screen industries through competitive tax reliefs, investing in studio infrastructure, supporting innovation, and promoting independent content,” said a spokesman for the Culture, Media and Sport department. To secure debate in the British Parliament, the petition will need 100,000 signatures.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

John Finley has left his position as EVP of Development at Fox News. “Fox News Media and John Finley have parted ways after an independent investigation concluded that he had violated certain standards of business conduct,” said a Fox News spokesperson. Finley had been with the company for over 20 years.

Brady McCollum is leaving Crunchyroll after 15 years. The former COO at the anime streamer has since promoted Chief Marketing Officer Gita Rebbapragada to the open role as it reshapes its team. McCollum said in a statement, “I would be hard-pressed to say this decision isn’t personally bittersweet; a key part of that is this immensely talented team, the strength and momentum of the business today, and the major opportunity ahead. However, it is also important for me to build versus grow, and I’m looking to create some new milestones and meaningful moments.”

Datonics appointed Rob Finora to the chief revenue officer role. The data industry veteran will lead sales and business development teams in the newly created position.
