Disney networks including FX, ESPN, Disney Channel and more went dark on cable TV provider Charter Spectrum last night due to a carriage dispute. “We’ve been in ongoing negotiations with Charter for some time and have not yet agreed to a new market-based agreement,” said Disney said in a statement. “Disney Entertainment has successful deals in place with pay TV providers of all types and sizes across the country, and the rates and terms we are seeking in this renewal are driven by the marketplace. We’re committed to reaching a mutually agreed upon resolution with Charter and we urge them to work with us to minimize the disruption to their customers.” Countered Charter, “We offered Disney a fair deal, yet they are demanding an excessive increase.” Charter Spectrum has 14.7 million subscribers.
The judge in Donald Trump’s Georgia trial said he will allow the proceedings to be broadcast and live-streamed. Both stations currently broadcast LIV Golf and will expand carriage to include the entire CW Programming offering. “With The CW’s first-ever ACC college football game featuring the Pittsburgh Panthers and the Cincinnati Bearcats in primetime on September 9, we are pleased to be adding WPNT-TV in Pittsburgh and KOMO-TV in Seattle to our affiliate group,” said Dennis Miller, President of The CW Network. “We appreciate that Sinclair values their partnership with The CW as we remake the network with our significant investment in sports, combined with a smart entertainment programming strategy that will further expand viewership on a local and national level.”
The Golden Globes, acquired in June by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge from the beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association, doesn’t have a broadcaster yet for its 2024 awards ceremony, slated for January 7, but it has a new membership board and a set of deadlines. “We are proud of how the Golden Globes has evolved over the past two years and where the organization is headed,” said Globes President Helen Hoehne. “With its unique international footprint and global perspective on the entertainment world, this esteemed and trusted board truly sets the Golden Globes apart as an organization intent on recognizing achievements in film and television with superior credibility and integrity.” The awards’ submission website opens October 2. STRIKE UPDATES
Health coverage for certain qualified SAG-AFTRA participants who would otherwise lose coverage on October 1 will be extended for a quarter. “This will come as a great relief to our members,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “I think it’s important that we never forget that we are in a contract negotiation with the AMPTP and under no circumstances should the health and well-being of members and their families ever be weaponized against them because of this strike. The AMPTP is long overdue to return to the negotiating table with a fresh perspective on their integral relationship with SAG-AFTRA members. The ball is in their court to do the right thing on behalf of performers and accept the inevitable paradigm shift with grace and generosity.”
The Directors Guild Foundation is contributing $100,000 in new financial assistance to the Motion Picture & Television Fund for industry workers affected by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. “Our film crews are our work family,” said DGF Foundation Chairman Todd Holland. “We need to help everyone who’s suffering….The need is so great, and we are glad the Directors Guild Foundation can help meet the challenge.”
