Major League Baseball’s 2016 postseason schedule is officially in play, as the league unveiled its lineup and dates, beginning with the American League Wild Card Game presented by Budweiser on TBS on Oct. 4 while the National League plays on ESPN the next day. Meanwhile, the 112th World Series on FOX will begin on Oct. 25. Potential regular season tiebreakers would be played on ESPN on Oct. 3. Both AL Division Series then launch on Oct. 6 (with the slate set for TBS), with the two NLDS openers set for Oct. 7 and running across FOX, FS1 and MLB Network. The AL Championship Series begins Oct. 14 on TBS while the NLCS launches Oct. 15 on FOX or FS1.
A much-hyped UFC 202: Diaz vs. McGregor on Saturday ranked as the third-biggest PPV event in UFC history and the first under the WME/IMG umbrella, according to the promotion, ranking behind only UFC 196 and UFC 100 in the record books. The company reports that the event generated the highest number of digital buys in UFC history as well as the highest number of Commercial PPV locations for an event. Meanwhile, FS1 got a boost Saturday’s card with its coverage of the prelims rising 7% over last August’s FS1 prelim card for UFC 190. Programming averaged 1,300,000 viewers. Meanwhile, its prefight show posted 523,000 viewers, making it the seventh most-watched PPV prefight show on the network to date.
CBS Sports is holding form for its lineup of NFL talent this season, with few tweaks to the roster. Jim Nantz, Phil Simms and Tracy Wolfson leading The NFL on CBS as its top team for Sunday as well as Thursday Night Football. Ian Eagle/Dan Fouts are on deck as its No. 2 team, with other pairings that include: Greg Gumbel/Trent Green; Kevin Harlan/Rich Gannon; Spero Dedes/Solomon Wilcots; Andrew Catalon/Steve Tasker/Steve Beuerlein; Tom McCarthy/Adam Archuleta; and Carter Blackburn/Chris Simms with Brad Nessler calling play-by-play for select games. James Brown anchors the NFL Today beside Boomer Esiason, Bill Cowher, Tony Gonzalez and Bart Scott.
The Olympics helped push Telemundo and NBC Universo to a reach of 16.6 million total viewers with 8 million adults 18-49 to its programming. Telemundo averaged 456,000 total viewers, increasing the Monday to Sunday daytime time slot by 12% over prior year with 208,000 adults in the 18-49 demo. NBC Universo delivered an average of 106,000 total viewers across 17 days of Olympics programming, up 212% over the previous year.
The 2016 GEICO ESPN High School Football Showcase is set to feature 12 games this season across ten weeks, starting Sept. 2, with a total of 11 states set for the spotlight. Opening play will be St. Frances Academy/Paramus Catholic on ESPNU at 6p. Combined with the previously announced 2016 ESPN High School Kickoff, ESPN will carry 22 high school football games across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU this season.
El Rey Network is doubling down on Lucha Underground star Rey Mysterio. The wrestler inked a one-year first-look deal with the network that will include work on scripted and unscripted shows. “Rey Mysterio’s incredible talent extends far beyond the ring,” said El Rey Network President and G.M. Daniel Tibbets. “He is creative and collaborative and has a keen eye for great entertainment. Rey embodies the El Rey Network brand, and we are thrilled to expand our relationship with him.”
Season four of Pac-12 Sports Report debuts on Aug. 26 at 10p on pac-12 Networks. Ashley Adamson and Mike Yam return as hosts and will offer top stories from around the Pac-12 every Thursday, Friday, and Sunday night live from Pac-12 Studios in San Francisco. Adidas serves as the official sponsor of the show on Sunday nights.

A federal appeals court sided with Golf Channel in a sponsorship challenge, ruling that the network does not need not repay $5.9 million it received from Allen Stanford in exchange for services aimed at promoting what was eventually ruled as a Ponzi scheme, according to Reuters. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans stated the payment was not fraudulent because “reasonable creditors would have deemed the network’s sponsorship of the men’s Stanford St Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee, to have had sufficient value,” according to the report.

More data from NBC Olympics’ side of the fence detailing how Millennials engaged with the Olympics. Research conducted for NBC Research during the Games by Shareablee said that Millennials who watched Olympic highlights on social media that day were significantly more likely to watch both NBC’s primetime coverage on television and stream NBC’s digital content that evening and that more than half of those streaming NBC Olympics’ digital video content were under age 35. The company saw more than 600 Million video views of NBC Olympics Facebook video and nearly 33 million Snapchatters consumed NBC-partnered coverage in the US with the majority under age 35. The company also saw a 7x increase in YouTube subscribers during the Games. Overall, 90% of Millennials who watched Olympic highlights on social media said they are adding to my enjoyment of the games.
The NHL will now incorporate Sportradar’s Fraud Detection System into its own game-integrity protection systems to monitor global gaming activity and trends across more than 550 operators worldwide “in order to pinpoint unusual patterns that could be cause for concern” for all regular-season and postseason NHL games for any potential manipulation.
NBC Sports Digital made its NBC Sports Scores app open for business, offering “a personalized sports guide that delivers the most up-to-date scores, notifies fans of important upcoming events or moments in sports, and contains on-demand news and information from more than 25 leagues.” The app is built off the NBC Olympics: Rio News & Results app and acts as a complement to the live streaming available on the NBC Sports app, featuring game trending, online and TV listing to every sports event, personalization, and more.
At Kids Drive NASCAR, the organization unveiled the launch of the Acceleration Nation app, marking the “first digital experience created just for kids featuring racing-themed games, activities and ways to learn more about the sport.
Sports industry-veteran Philippe Dore announced plans to launch Stoked Digital, described as a digital marketing consulting and talent recruitment boutique based in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. The outfit will look to assist rights holders in sports & entertainment recruit the best talent to support new digital initiatives. The agency has brought in clients that include Larry Ellison’s BNP Paribas Open ATP & WTA event, the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Indycar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “The timing is right to launch the agency with so many organizations going through a digital transformation and trying to reach their consumers who are always moving from platform to platform and expect more from rights holders. Now is also the time for sports organizations to re-evaluate their staffing structure and create new roles in disciplines such as business intelligence and analytics, for example,” said Dore, Founder & CEO of the company.
Yahoo Sports Daily Fantasy is introducing players to the Yahoo Cup, a season-long fantasy football contest where players can compete for their shot at over $100,000 in total prizes. Prizes will be awarded every week based on the highest weekly scores and a grand prize winner will be rewarded $50,000 based on cumulative points from Week 1 through Week 16. Every contest will be single-entry to prevent scripting or competing against a diversified portfolio of lineups.
Sports staking and sponsorship marketplace YouStake is partnering with Rivalcade to bring the eSports industry into the crowdsourcing space. The deal will see YouStake provide Rivalcade with a registration portal and an entry fee crowdsourcing platform in a move to inject over $50,000 into Rivalcade tournament sponsorships over the next 12-18 months. “One of our visions with YouStake is for eSport fans to be able to sponsor their favorite players into tournaments, and for players to raise the capital they need to compete in larger prize pool events.
