Silver Chalice Ventures unveiled a digital media rights, technology and investment partnership with BAMTech that will include a new suite of live streaming products and experiences coming to college sports fans across mobile and connected platforms later this year. BAMTech will provide its technology infrastructure and have access to distribute the ACC Digital Network and Campus Insiders with the two platforms transitioning to BAMTech’s streaming platform. The company will now pursue expansion of its portfolio of collegiate sports rights. BAMTech also acquired an equity position in SCV, an affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

While the Closing Ceremony may have capped an overall drop in viewership for the Games, NBC Olympics is touting its coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics as the most ambitious media event in history, noting that 78% of US TV homes tuned into NBC Olympics’ Rio Games coverage and a TV-only audience of 198 million viewers, according to Nielsen national data. Coverage of the 15 nights of primetime competition registered a Total Audience Delivery average of 27.5 million viewers to rank as the second-highest average audience on record for the competition for any non-domestic Summer Games, with its platforms offering a 7% lift over the NBC-only audience on competition nights. NBCSN ranked as the top sports cable network in primetime over the 14 days it presented live extended primetime Rio 2016 coverage, averaging 1.32 million viewers for its primetime coverage. Telemundo and NBC Universo’s coverage of the Rio Olympics reached 16.6 million viewers and eight million adults 18-49. “All of our advertisers leave Rio satisfied, thanks to excellent planning and efforts of our sales team,” said NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus. “The Olympics are the only event of its kind, dominating primetime for 17 straight nights, 118 Summer Olympic nights in a row.” Across NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app, there was a record 3.3 Billion total streaming minutes for the company.
The upcoming US Open will see ESPN offer 130 live hours of the tennis tournament on TV as well as a record 1,300 on WatchESPN with daylong matches from up to 12 courts. Programming starts Aug. 29 and runs through Sept. 11. Elements this year sees WatchESPN offer an additional court of coverage, press Conferences on WatchESPN, an expanded SportsCenter on the Road preview show, ESPN Deportes serving up the semifinals in addition to the championships and Arthur Ashe Kids Day moving to ABC on Aug. 28 at 2p.
Around the dial, Tennis Channel will dedicate more than 175 hours to the US Open this year, with a daily morning lead-in show, all-night encore matches and a new nightly program hosted by Mary Carillo, aka US Open Daily from 11p-midnight. Daily lead-in show Tennis Channel Live at the US Open returns this year at 9a, hosted by Brett Haber with analysts Martina Navratilova, Jim Courier and Lindsay Davenport.
On the golf front, NBC Sports Group lined up around 100 hours of live tournament and news programming surrounding the FedExCup Playoffs, starting Thursday with Golf Channel’s coverage of The Barclays. The network will carry live coverage of the opening two rounds and weekend lead-in coverage at each of the four playoff events, with NBC carrying third and final round coverage of the final three events: the Deutsche Bank Championship, BMW Championship and the TOUR Championship. Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller will anchor NBC’s weekend coverage of the final three events.
NESN is bringing in Kacie McDonnell to the network as an anchor and reporter where she will appear on NESN’s three main sports news programs: NESN Sports Today, NESN Live, and NESN Sports Update. She joins from KSHB-TV in Kansas City.

NASCAR is getting into kid’s play, announcing that starting in 2017, kids 12 and younger will be admitted free to all NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races. The announcement was made at Kids Drive NASCAR, a week-long, youth initiative. “There really is no other experience like attending a NASCAR race in person, and that’s especially true for kids,” said Jill Gregory, NASCAR senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “So many children have become lifelong NASCAR fans because their parents brought them to their first race, and this new ticket offering makes it even more affordable for families to create memories that will last a lifetime."
Ryan Lochte’s antics in Rio have now cost him sponsorships with swimwear maker Speedo and luxury retailer Ralph Lauren Corp, according to Reuters. Both companies ended their sponsorship agreements with the swimmer after he admitted to exaggerating his story about being robbed at gunpoint during the Games.
Campbell’s Chunky Soup hits the NFL season with the “Everyman All-Star League,” serving up six NFL stars: Drew Brees, Odell Beckham Jr., Eddie Lacy, Todd Gurley, Eric Ebron and Kyle Long for the new campaign. “Draft Day” dropped yesterday and “chronicles the GMs making their picks from Drew Brees’ basement, where Odell Beckham Jr. selects an ‘everyman’ crowd favorite who is a welder, volunteer fireman AND a doll furniture maker for his daughter. “
WWE Superstar Dolph Ziggler emerged as KFC’s newest Colonel Sanders via a partnership with WWE. During SummerSlam, Ziggler’s Sanders and The Miz (playing the chicken) offered up the newest promo for the restaurant, which can be seen here.
The LA Rams debut their first in-market branding campaign tomorrow with We’re Home, featuring Rams players leaping over L.A. landmarks, including The Griffith Park Observatory and catching passes amid the towering buildings of the downtown skyline with players that include todd Gurley, Aaron Donald, and Tavon Austin. The franchise partnered with creative agency Art Machine, an Engine Group company on this inaugural campaign as the Rams’ marketing agency of record.
Facebook reports that 277 million unique people joined the conversation about the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on the platform, generating 1.5 billion interactions. Top athletes in the dialogues: Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Neymar Jr., Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky. Top events: swimming, gymnastics, track, soccer, beach volleyball. Top video: Michael Phelps’ live broadcast before his final team race with over 3.97M views.

FOX Sports is prepping to open the 2016/2017 Bundesliga season with a VR play, as part of its partnership with NextVR. Aug. 26 will see NextVR showcase Bayern Munchen/Werder Bremen from Allianz Arena in to fans in select locations globally, with the match 4:30p. This marks the first time the Bundesliga will broadcast live to an international audience in VR with seven cameras set to capture the action. “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with FOX Sports and for the opportunity to produce a Bundesliga match,” said Brad Allen, Executive Chairman of NextVR. “We are excited about the growing diversity of NextVR’s content portfolio as we continue to provide international sports fans with a wide array of options including the opening game of the Bundesliga season.”
PGA TOUR Digital unveiled a slate of podcasts that showcase its personalities in a move to reach a larger audience base. “Our shift from live streaming audio to podcasting is about serving our fans with content they can consume when it fits their schedule,” said Sloane Kelley, PGA TOUR Senior Director of Content. “We feel our current offering and upcoming podcasts will bring fans closer to the game and our players.” Four shows open the slate: Golf Talk America, On the mark, PGA TOUR Replay and Talk of the TOUR.
Retired Laker Kobe Bryant announced the formation of a $100 million venture capital fund to invest in media, technology and data companies, according to the AP. The fund will be known as Bryant Stibel, and be co-managed by investor Jeff Stibel.
During the first full week of the 2016 Summer Olympics, gymnastics took the top spot of sports that Americans were searching for online, according to data from Hitwise, a division of Connexity. The study found that 2.32% of all searches containing the words “Olympic” or “Olympics” during the week ending August 13 also included the word “gymnastics.” Swimming and soccer rounded out the top three sports which were mentioned in 1.59% and 1.4% of Olympic-related searches, respectively.
FACEIT’s eSports Championship Series (ECS) locked in its plans and lineup of teams for season two of the ECS – Counter-Strike League, including 16 teams that have pre-qualified based on their position in the league’s debut season. The ECS will turn to its new Developmental League for fresh teams to join the league for season two, with eight teams from each region set to battle for the open positions in each region’s bracket. Four teams from each region will then qualify for the ECS Developmental League through the ECS Open Qualifiers and another four teams invited by the ECS to compete in the league. “We are committed to the further growth of CS:GO” said Michele Attisani, Chief Business Officer and co-founder at FACEIT “Structure and consistency are very important to making the ECS what it is, the Open Qualifiers and upcoming Development League will go a long way to help build that structure, and provide even more exciting content for our community.”
The Halo Championship Series 2016 season is booked, with Fall 2016 beginning in September with total $325,000 prize pool. Starting Sept. 14th, contest across Europe and North America will take place every Wednesday and Thursday on the Twitch Halo channel at 7:30p, dangling prize money of $225,000 in North America and $100,000 in Europe. The 2016 Fall Finals will be held December 10th/11th at the ESL Studios in Burbank.
