08/19/16: NBC taps Manno to lead Paralympic coverage; Dayton wants to remain First; PBR expands its Frontier


Good morning. It’s Friday August 19, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBC Olympics announced that Carolyn Manno will host the company’s 70+ hours of 2016 Paralympic Games across NBC, NBCSN, and the NBC Sports app. Other talent will include Todd Harris, Jason Knapp and Steve Schlanger, who will call Track & Field, Swimming and Wheelchair Basketball, respectively. Ed Cohen makes his NBC Olympics debut to offer play-by-play for coverage of Wheelchair Rugby. Other names in the mix include Justin Zook, Katy Sullivan, Paul Schulte,  Chris Waddell, Gary Pate and Kevin Barnett with Amy Purdy, Heather Cox and Lewis Johnson as reporters.


Meanwhile, Wednesday’s primetime Rio Olympics coverage across the NBCU umbrella posted a Total Audience Delivery average of 22.1 million viewers with a 13.3 household rating, according to the company, which noted that NBC’s primetime Rio Olympic ratings are the most dominant in Olympic television history in the Adult 18-49 demographic” in Nielsen national numbers. The network is averaging a 7.7 primetime score for the first 13 nights for a rise of 353% above the other broadcast networks combined.

Wednesday’s coverage of the Olympic women’s golf competition on Golf Channel saw afternoon coverage swell 578% among average viewers and grow 467% in household rating vs. the same Wednesday in 2012 opposite the London Games. The numbers matched the highest-rated round one of any women’s golf event in 2016.

MLB owners approved the sale of a controlling stake in the Mariners from Nintendo of America to a lineup of minority owners led by Western Wireless Corp. founder John Stanton and retired Microsoft executive Chris Larson, according to the AP. The sale was announced in April.

The University of Dayton and The Big Hoopla Local Organizing Committee are looking to keep the First Four in play, announcing the submission of its formal NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament bid package last week to keep the games at the venue. Bids were submitted for individual years – 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022  with an addition submission to host the NCAA First and Second Rounds in 2021 and 2022.

ESPN’s College Football Live is offering viewers a new format this season as contributors will now appear from various locations around the nation. Samantha Ponder and Molly McGrath will rotate hosting duties Tuesday through Friday at 1:30p with Chris Cotter appearing on Mondays on ESPN2. The show will also offer a new visual design featuring on-screen emphasis of the commentators rather than them positioned on a set.

NFL Media announced that addition of analytics expert Cynthia Frelund to its team, where she will appear across several studio shows and platforms to offer statistical and advanced analytics insight on the likes of NFL GameDay Morning and NFL Fantasy Live. Cynthia joins NFL Media from ESPN, where she served as a Predictive Analytics Analyst on SportsCenter for the past two years.

Amid the Ryan Lochte controversy stemming from his claims of being robbed in Rio, Esquire Network announced plans for a marathon of What Would Ryan Lochte Do? starting tonight at 6p. Eight half-hour episodes will run overall.

Frontier Communications will ride a long-term partnership with PBR as the organization hits the second half of the 2016 season. Frontier inked a deal to serve as the official communications partner at 19 events across PBR’s elite Built Ford Tough Series as well as its expansion Blue DEF Tour. The partnership includes six event entitlements in the Built Ford Tough Series, beginning with this weekend’s The Frontier Communications Music City Knockout, Presented by Cooper Tires, with coverage starting tonight at 9p on CBS Sports Network.  PBR on CBS first-half 2016 viewership is showing gains of 20% this season.

Following a new naming rights deal with the Buffalo Bills, New Era announced the new moniker for the team’s venue, which will be called New Era Field, effective immediately. The seven-year deal will see the pair offer interactive game day activations with signage transformation set to be completes over the next 12 months. Upon the expiration of the stadium lease in 2023, New Era will have the right of first negotiation with the Buffalo Bills for any naming rights held by the club.
ESPN inked a deal with Holiday Inn Express to serve as the newest official sponsor of the Southeastern Conference and SEC Network. Holiday Inn Express serves as the official hotel of the SEC and will have category exclusivity on site at all SEC Championship events throughout the year, use of SEC and SEC Network marks and logos, as well as access to on site hospitality and marketing opportunities. The brand will also bring its Pancake Selfie Express mobile breakfast tour to SEC tailgate parties throughout the Fall.


Sportradar locked in a new deal with England’s Rugby Football Union that extends its sports integrity monitoring partnership until 2019. The next three years will see Sportradar monitor all RFU sanctioned matches of the Aviva Premiership, the Greene King IPA Championship, the Anglo-Welsh Cup, the British & Irish Cup, and the Old Mutual Wealth series, encompassing over 420 matches per year.


Nintendo and ESL are bringing Splatoon competition to Europe. Announcing the move at gamescon, Nintendo execs stated that play will begin in early September and the company is now offering a free online demo of the game, aka Splatoon Summer Testfire 2016, for Wii U owners.

Newegg is leveraging amateur eSports as it sets out for a college tour that will include 80 stops in two months. In addition to hosting a 10×20-foot tent with live DJ and a gaming lounge, attendees will be eligible to take part in Newegg’s Game Like a Pro eSports tournament, hosted by the American Video Game League on October 22. Entrants will compete for two grand prize packages valued at $2,500 each for the winners of the Hearthstone and Rocket League competitions.
